DOH warns vs. false social media posts on mpox, 'lockdowns'

An undated colorized transmission electron micrograph of mpox virus particles (pink) found within an infected cell (yellow), cultured in the laboratory, captured at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Integrated Research Facility (IRF) in Fort Detrick, Maryland. NIAID/ Handout via REUTERS The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday warned the public against misleading social media posts on the transmission of monkeypox (mpox) and that supposed lockdowns have been implemented in the country to contain the virus. DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Dr. Albert Domingo asked the public to reject such information, stressing that mpox numbers in May have actually declined compared to cases logged in April 2025. "Huwag paniwalaan ang mga kumakalat na pekeng Facebook post na may mapanlinlang na marketing strategy, pekeng endorsement mula sa mga eksperto, at hindi makatotohanang mga pahayag tungkol sa kalusugan," Domingo said in an audio statement. (Do not believe fake Facebook posts making rounds on the internet that use deceptive marketing strategies, fake endorsements from experts, and false health claims.) Domingo added that there was no need to implement any lockdown, since mpox is not spread through air particles. "Walang pangangailangang magkaroon ng lockdown dahil sa mpox, dahil hindi ito airborne (There is no need for a lockdown due to mpox because it is not airborne)," Domingo said. According to Domingo, the DOH has coordinated with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to take down the misleading accounts. In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB on Saturday, Domingo said the wearing of face masks—as imposed by some local government units (LGUs)—will not prevent the spread of mpox because the virus is transmitted through skin to skin or close contact. Local government units may coordinate with the DOH, Domingo said, to check the precautions needed to the transmission of diseases. Allaying fears of a rising trend, Domingo said mpox cases were higher in 2024, and that the figure for May 2025 was lower compared to April 2025. The fight against mpox has gained traction, Domingo said, as several LGUs have stepped up their efforts. "Nagkataon lamang po na nage-headline dahil aktibo at nag-a-anunsyo na ngayon ang mga LGU," Domingo said. (It just so happened that it's making headlines now because LGUs have become more active and have been issuing announcements.) According to the DOH, the country has yet to detect a case of the more severe mpox clade 1B. "Wala pa ring mpox ng clade 1B na nakikita dito sa Pilipinas. Panay clade 2 ang meron natin. Mas mababa ang mortality o pagkamatay ng clade 2. Nasa mga 1 sa bawat 10, kumpara sa 4 hanggang 5 ng clade 1B," Domingo said. (We have not detected any clade 1B mpox cases in the Philippines. What we have are clade 2 cases, which have a lower mortality rate of about 1 out of 10. In comparison, deaths from clade 1B are about 4 or 5 [out of 10.]) He advised the public to get accurate health information from the DOH website and social media accounts. Also in his interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Domingo said over 50 mpox cases were recorded in April, as compared to less than 50 this May. He added that some previously reported mpox cases were later verified to be chicken pox. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

DOH: More mpox cases in April 2025 than in May; total cases 911 since 2024

More cases of monkeypox (mpox) were detected in April 2025 as compared to May, and the total cases have so far reached 911 since 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) said Saturday. "Simula 2024, nasa 911 na ang kaso... Pero hindi 'yun ang binabantayan ng DOH. Ang tinitignan natin ay per month basis. Ang na-detect natin ay less than 50 cases nu'ng May. Nu'ng April, lagpas 50," DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB. (Starting 2024, the cases reached 911... But that is not what DOH is focusing on. We are looking at the per month basis. We detected less than 50 cases in May. In April, it was more than 50.) "Tinitignan namin ang epidemic curve. Hindi kami tumitingin sa total. Kapag tumingin kasi sa total, ang impression parang dami-dami nang kaso," he added. (We are looking at the epidemic curve. We are not focusing on the total. When you look at the total [number of cases], the impression is that there are too many cases.) "Tila nagkakaroon ng pananaw na may surge ng mpox kasi sunod-sunod na lumalabas... Pero nu'ng tinignan namin sa epidemic curve, mas marami pa nu'ng Abril kumpara ngayong Mayo," Domingo said. (There seems to have been the notion that there was a surge in mpox because reports came out one after the other... But when we looked at the epidemic curve, there were more cases in April compared to May.) Domingo said in September 2024, there were around 200 mpox cases but this number includes the suspected and probable ones. "Out of mahigit 200, less than 10 or 20 lang ang nag-positive na confirmed (Out of the more than 200, less than 10 or 20 only turned out positive and confirmed.) The DOH official said cases first reported as mpox were later verified to be not mpox but chickenpox. "Minsan kasi kahit suspected pa lang, nire-report na [na kaso ng mpox]," Domingo said. (Sometimes even if the case is still just suspected, it is reported [as mpox].) Domingo also reiterated that only the mild variant of mpox, Clade II, is the one detected in the country. The more transmissible Clade 1b has not yet been detected in the Philippines. "Hindi natin kailangang mabahala dahil 'yung clade o variant [ng mpox] dito sa Pilipinas, wala pa tayong nakikitang Clade 1B. Ang mayroon tayo ay 'Yung Clade II," he said. (We do not need to be alarmed because the clade or variant in the Philippines is Clade II. We don't have Clade 1B yet.) DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa on Friday allayed the fears of the public as the mpox cases being monitored in the country are of Clade II variant, the mild variant of the said disease. The DOH chief added that some of the fatalities it recorded did not die of mpox, but due to complications brought about by advanced human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. "Mas nababahala si Sec. Herbosa sa maraming kaso ng HIV. Every day, umaabot tayo ng 56 to 57 news cases ng HIV per day," Domingo said. (Sec. Herbosa is more concerned about the many HIV cases. Every day there are 56 to 57 new cases of HIV.) "Ang mpox ay self-resolving disease. Virus siya at kusang gumagaling sa loob ng 2 to 3 weeks... 'Yung mga vulnerable, 'yung mga pumanaw, usually hindi mpox ang dahilan kundi advanced HIV. Nagkataon na mayroon din silang mpox," he added. (Mpox is a self-resolvind disease. It is caused by a virus and one gets well in 2 to 3 weeks... Those who are vulnerable, who died, usually mpox did not cause the death but advanced HIV did. It just so happened that they also had mpox.) Domingo also said that since mpox is not an airborne disease, wearing a face mask cannot prevent the transmission of the virus. "May ilang LGUs na nagpa-mandatory facemask. Wala namang mali sa pagsusuot ng facemask... Pero ang mpox ay hindi airborne kundi close contact. Balat sa balat... Depende sa mode of transmission ang dapat na ginagawa na precaution," he said. (Some LGUs made face mask-wearing mandatory. There is nothing wrong with wearing a face mask. But mpox is not airborne but spread through close contact. Skin to skin. Precautions should be implemented based on mode of transmission.) Domingo said local government units may coordinate with the DOH to check what precautions are needed to prevent transmission of diseases. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Style Encore's second city location steps onto men's clothing stage

Chantelle Harder didn't always have entrepreneurial aspirations, but today she runs seven businesses. In May, Harder and business partner Alex Domingo opened Style Encore at 1190 St. James St. The Winnipeg store purchases and resells clothing and accessories, and is part of a chain created by franchisor Winmark Corp. Harder also owns a Plato's Closet location and a Once Upon a Child store in Winnipeg, and she is the founder of Harder HIIT Fitness, a non-profit community gym in the city. The 46-year-old also co-owns three Plato's Closet locations in Alberta. MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS Style Encore co-owner Chantelle Harder in the new consignment shop at 1190 James St. Harder's employees are often teens working their first jobs and she enjoys the opportunity to mentor them. 'I love working with young people,' said Harder, who was an educator before becoming a business owner. 'Watching them learn and grow is so rewarding. It's kind of like being a teacher, to be honest with you, which is maybe why I love it so much.' Style Encore offers affordable, gently used casual and business clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories for people in their late 20s and older. It sources the items by purchasing them from customers, who can receive cash on the spot for goods they've outgrown or no longer want. It's the second Style Encore location in Winnipeg (the other is on Nairn Avenue) and the only one in the city to offer men's clothing and an e-commerce platform for online shoppers. The store features a range of brands including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Gap and Lululemon. The store carries items that sell for as little as $5, as well as luxury handbags, designer shoes and sunglasses that retail for hundreds of dollars. 'I love the concept of keeping all of these things out of our landfills and giving the community a safe and welcoming place to come sell and buy,' Harder said. Harder made her first foray into business in 2001, when she and her then-husband started an online pharmacy based in Minnedosa. Ten years later, she opened her Once Upon a Child location. Once Upon a Child and Plato's Closet are also Winmark brands that buy and sell gently used items, the first for children and the second for teenagers and young adults. For Harder, it made sense to open a store for customers 25 and older so she could meet the needs of people of all ages. She asked Domingo, a human resources manager for her other businesses, to join her in the venture. The business partners and their staff purchased 76,000 items in the six weeks leading up to the location's grand opening May 1. Since then, business at the 4,200-square-foot store has been brisk, Domingo said. 'We expected to be busy but I don't think we expected to be as busy as we are. It's a nice surprise,' she said. Harder and Domingo are both Métis and say they are proud to represent Indigenous business owners. They also find meaning in running a business that focuses on sustainability and offers customers affordable options. Harder is motivated in part by the fact she lives with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. After enduring whole-brain radiation therapy and ongoing chemo treatments every three weeks, she says she is driven to expand her businesses. 'It just kind of gives you a wake up call to make sure that you're living the life that you want to lead,' said Harder, who has four children between the ages of 15 and 21. 'I hope that my stores can create a legacy for my family, and for Alex, too, at Style Encore. I find being busy is the best cancer cure of all.' Friends Alison Wolfe and Karen Toews visited the store for the first time Monday and were impressed. 'I wasn't expecting it to be this full right away, but it's nice to have a lot of options here,' Wolfe said. Toews appreciates Style Encore focuses on selling quality items. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. 'We're not necessarily looking for the fast fashion. We're looking for the stuff that will last a little longer,' she said. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Winmark Corp. advertises itself as 'the resale company.' In addition to Style Encore, Plato's Closet and Once Upon a Child, the U.S. company owns the retail resale brands Play It Again Sports and Music Go Round. As of December 2024, Winmark had 1,350 franchises in operation. There are more than 65 Style Encore locations in Canada and the U.S. Aaron EppReporter Aaron Epp reports on business for the Free Press. Bay to Breakers 2025 off and running with thousands on S.F. streets

Thousands of competitors hit San Francisco's streets Sunday morning for the 112th running of Bay to Breakers, a world-famous footrace known as much for its colorful costumes as its competitive sprinters. Runners assembled early at Howard and Main streets, with the first wave of the race beginning shortly after 8 a.m. and the last wave at 8:45 a.m. Competitors were assigned 10 starting corrals based on their estimated finish times provided during registration. The course closes at 12:30 p.m. and the finish line at 1 p.m. Organizers expected more than 20,000 registered participants this year, though the race usually attracts thousands of unregistered runners. The 12-kilometer (7.4-mile) run stretches from the bay at the Embarcadero to the breakers at Ocean Beach, just beyond the Great Highway. Runners pass through some of the city's most scenic neighborhoods along the way, including the Financial District, Hayes Valley and the Haight-Ashbury, winding up in Golden Gate Park for the final leg. The race also included a 15K option, with an additional 1.8 miles along the Great Highway. Sunday's race marked Mike Domingo's 50th time across the finish line, a milestone and feat for the 68-year-old Redwood City resident, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer in 2021. The diagnosis came with an estimation that he had 30 months to live, but Domingo, who once took the race seriously as a college track runner and later turned the event into a party, decided not to let cancer 'stand in the way of life,' said his wife, Christine Domingo. Mike Domingo said he hopes to inspire others. 'Anything can be done if you put your mind to it,' he said ahead of the race. His wife, mother and several friends walked the course with him, wearing shirts commemorating the milestone. 'I survived!' the shirts read in part. Street closures started at 7 p.m. Saturday in preparation for the race, with many not reopening until 5 p.m. Sunday. Travelers were urged to plan their routes in advance or adjust their plans while streets were closed. The race route cuts San Francisco in half, leaving only two north/south crossing points for buses and cars, at Crossover Drive and the Embarcadero. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency recommended travelers stay on one side of the route if possible, but those who need to get across could use an underground train such as the Muni Metro subway or BART, or take a bus as close to the route as possible, cross the route on foot, and pick the bus up again on the other side. Participants, who run solo or in groups, often spend weeks concocting their costumes, often modeled on superheroes, newsmakers, historical figures or cartoon characters. Some runners choose to forgo costumes or any other form of clothing beyond shoes and socks, on their feet or elsewhere. The race has featured a centipede division since 1978, with 13- to 15-member teams running the full course joined by a bungee cord or similar connection. Unofficial traditions include spectators tossing tortillas into the crowd at the start of Bay to Breakers and participants in salmon suits 'swimming upstream,' running the race in reverse. The oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world, the Breakers began in 1912 in an effort to lift the spirits of San Franciscans still reeling from the 1906 earthquake and fire. Since then, it has paused only in 2020 and 2021 as a pandemic precaution.

SNL's Chloe Fineman Just Unveiled Her Melania Trump Impression: Watch

SNL cast member Chloe Fineman stopped by The View on May 12 and shared that she's been working on perfecting her impression of First Lady Melania Trump. Her impression really can't be described over text. Just watch for yourself at the 4:40 mark in the video, below. Fineman was there to promote her new movie Summer of 69, but this Saturday (May 17) also happens to be the finale of Saturday Night Live's monumental 50th season. It's been a standout year for many reasons, but no sketch or character has popped off more than Domingo. Fineman stars in the sketches as Kelsey, a new bride and mother, whose friends celebrate her life events by changing the lyrics of popular songs to tell the story of Kelsey's affair with a man named Domingo (Marcello Hernández). RELATED: Chloe Fineman's Transformative Impression of Elmo Singing "Jingle Bells" Is Brilliant "Truly, like the only time I'm recognized now is as Domingo's girlfriend," Fineman said on The View. "I think people are jealous." She also confirmed that she is the SNL cast member who gets the most starstruck and proved it when View co-host Sarah Haines asked if recent Host Walton Goggins lived up to the hype. She understandably lost her words a bit as she tried to describe Goggins' V-shaped torso and abs, and explained that she now owns the yellow speedo he wore on the cover of Cultured magazine. So yeah, he lives up to the hype, at least as far as Fineman is will join the rest of her cast mates on the Season 50 finale of SNL, hosted by Scarlett Johansson with Musical Guest Bad Bunny. RELATED: Sarah Sherman Talks Making 's Domingo Sketch and Ariana Grande's "Bad Singing" Bad Bunny also made an appearance in the last Domingo sketch, but not as an affair of Kelsey's. He popped up during the 50th anniversary special as Santiago, brother of Domingo and Rinaldo (Pedro Pascal). Santiago did a kitchen renovation for Kelsey's parents (Molly Shannon and Martin Short) and then "had sex with the wife." Saturday Night Live Season 50 will be missed, but Kelsey's family's multiple affairs will never be forgotten. Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC. All episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
