Mariners' Eugenio Suarez scores walk-off run vs. White Sox
The post Mariners' Eugenio Suarez scores walk-off run vs. White Sox appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Mariners completed their sweep against the Chicago White Sox in dramatic fashion. Brandon Eisert came in to extend the game for the White Sox in the bottom of the 11th inning. However, Dominic Canzone hit a walk-off single to score Eugenio Suarez and win the game. Suarez was a big get for the Mariners at the Major League Baseball trade deadline and has stepped up. Canzone reached for a pitch Eisert threw to the outer half of the plate. He did not get very much of the ball, but it was enough to squeak it into right field. White Sox outfielder Michael Taylor tried to throw Suarez out at home plate, but Seattle's newest addition barely beat the throw to win the game. The walk-off hit capped off a wild game. Both teams scored a run in the 10th inning on an error to enter the 11th in a 3-3 tie. Fortunately, Canzone ended things with the first walk-off hit of his career. The victory gives Seattle four in a row and seven of their last ten games. After the Houston Astros lost to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, their division lead is just 1.5 games. The Mariners went all-in at this year's trade deadline. Seattle kicked things off by bringing in Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor on July 24. The move was the first of many that took the Mariners from a dark horse playoff team to a serious contender. However, Thursday's win proves that players like Canzone can step up and give Seattle close wins. While teams around the league made moves to improve, the Mariners stole the show. Seattle reunited with Suarez to vault themselves into the inner circle of contenders in the American League. His effort to beat Eisert and Chicago is exactly what the Mariners need in order to make a deep run in this year's postseason. Mariners hero vs. White Sox shares eye-opening take on turnaround after minors stint
The post Mariners hero vs. White Sox shares eye-opening take on turnaround after minors stint appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Mariners' capped a series sweep against the Chicago White Sox with a walk-off win in extra innings. And while new addition Eugenio Suarez scored the winning run, it was Dominic Canzone who came through with the big base hit. The Mariners right fielder delivered an exciting victory that pulled the team within a game and a half of the division-leading Astros. Canzone came through in the clutch with the game winner. The third-year pro has established himself as a starter in Seattle's outfield after spending most of the first two-plus months of the season in the minors. The Mariners called Canzone up on June 9 and he's carved out a role with the team. Reflecting on his time in Triple-A after the walk-off win, Canzone gave his take on playing in the minors. 'You can be salty down there and maybe not do the best job that you really can… or you can go the other way and just try to take every day for granted that you get to play baseball every day and work at it,' he explained, per Daniel Kramer of Dominic Canzone helps lift Mariners in tight division race The Mariners' aggressive mindset at the trade deadline appears to have built momentum for the team. Seattle landed Suarez and Josh Naylor in separate mid-season deals with the Arizona Diamondbacks. And after sweeping the White Sox, the Mariners have won six of seven games since July 31. In Thursday's wild win, Logan Gilbert and Shane Smith dueled it out early but each left after five innings. Chicago tied the game in the seventh and the score remained knotted until both teams plated a run in the 10th inning. The White Sox chose to intentionally walk Mitch Garver to face Canzone and he made them pay. With Suarez the designated runner on second, Canzone slapped a Brandon Eisert slider through the right side and sent Mariners fans home happy. Since his June 9 call up, Canzone had been slashing .296/.355/.500. After playing the hero on Thursday he has eight home runs and 17 RBI with a 141 OPS+ in 49 games this season. While Seattle moved to 1.5 games back in the AL West with the win, it wasn't all good news for the Mariners. Naylor exited the game with a shoulder injury after three innings Thursday. Although he's listed as day-to-day, the ailment is a lingering issue for the veteran first baseman. Pirates 7, Reds 0 Paul Skenes tossed six shutout innings and struck out eight to lead host Pittsburgh to a victory over Cincinnati. Despite allowing a career-high seven hits (five singles), Skenes (7-8) delivered another dominant performance to bolster his case for the National League Cy Young Award. Jared Triolo and Henry Davis each had two hits and two RBIs to give Skenes more than enough of a cushion to secure a win for the third time in his past four starts. It was Skenes' third consecutive start with eight or more strikeouts. Bryan Reynolds, who also had two hits, homered in the first inning off Reds' starter Brady Singer (9-9), who lasted only 3 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two. Taylor and Brooks Baldwin each had a solo homer for the White Sox, who lead the majors with 37 home runs since the All-Star break. Both teams scored once in the 10th. Lenyn Sosa raced home on a wild pitch from Seattle reliever Eduard Bazardo with the bases loaded to give Chicago a 3-2 lead. But in the bottom half, a throwing error by third baseman Josh Rojas on Miles Mastrobuoni's sacrifice bunt allowed Arozarena to score the tying run. ATHLETICS 6, NATIONALS 0 WASHINGTON (AP) — Jacob Lopez struck out a career-high 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings, Colby Thomas hit his first major league home run and drove in three, and the Athletics defeated Washington. Lopez (5-6) didn't allow a runner past second in the longest outing of his career. He allowed three hits and no walks, and retired his last 11 batters. Thomas, who debuted June 30 and was playing his 17th career game, ripped Mitchell Parker's elevated fastball to center for a two-run homer in the second inning. Shea Langeliers hit a sacrifice fly three batters later to make it 3-0. Darell Hernaiz hit a triple into the corner in left to lead off the fourth, then scored on Thomas' sacrifice fly. Agustín Ramírez added an RBI single for the Marlins in the fourth.
