This Bollywood actress started her career by winning the Miss Universe 2000 pageant. Soon after, she was showered with multiple projects in the Indian film industry. Three years later, the diva made her acting debut in Andaaz alongside Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. If you haven't guessed it yet, we're talking about B-town stars, Lara Dutta! Born in a non-film family with her father working for the Indian Air Force, Lara Dutta traveled a lot. She finally settled in Bengaluru and graduated from a prestigious educational institute. After participating and winning multiple beauty pageants, she finally brought home the coveted Miss Universe crown. Then in 2003, she debuted in Bollywood with the commercially successful movie, Andaaz, by playing a tomboy Kajal opposite Akshay Kumar. While shooting a sequence on top of a rock during high tide, a massive wave hit the rock and the Don 2 actress lost her balance. She slipped and was swept away by the waves. Since she didn't know how to swim at that time, her co-star, Akshay, thankfully rescued her. Talking about Lara Dutta's work front, the actress has been part of commercially successful films like Masti, No Entry, Bhagam Bhag, Partner, Billu Barber, Housefull, Don 2, to name a few. While her career was skyrocketing, she met with Indian tennis player, Mahesh Bhupathi and the couple got engaged in 2010. Farhan Akhtar Reveals Why Shah Rukh Khan Was the Perfect Choice For Don: 'No One Else...'
Last Updated: Farhan Akhtar reveals why Shah Rukh Khan was always his first and only choice to play Don in the 2006 remake, calling SRK's mix of charm and menace 'tailor-made' for the role. When Shah Rukh Khan stepped into the iconic role of Don in Farhan Akhtar's 2006 remake of the 1978 classic, comparisons with Amitabh Bachchan were inevitable. But as Farhan recently revealed, SRK not only embraced the challenge — he was always the first and only choice for the part. Speaking at the Waves Summit, the filmmaker opened up about his decision to cast Shah Rukh in the high-stakes remake. 'Shah Rukh's personality was tailor-made for that part," Farhan said, recalling how their friendship blossomed after Dil Chahta Hai. 'From 2001 to 2005, we spent a lot of evenings together. When I started writing Don, I was convinced it had to be him. His sense of humour, his self-deprecating style, his ability to be both charming and menacing — it was all inherently Don." Farhan also spoke about how Shah Rukh, a lifelong fan of both the original film and Amitabh Bachchan, saw the role as a personal milestone. 'For him, Don is massive. He's a huge fan of the film and Mr Bachchan. So stepping into those shoes was very exciting for him." When asked if there was a backup plan in case Shah Rukh turned down the role due to inevitable comparisons, Farhan quickly dismissed the idea. 'I don't think Shah Rukh is scared of things like that. He's very confident in his abilities." In fact, he added that SRK had sensed the offer was coming. 'We'd been spending so much time together, and I had told him I was writing it. He was ready. Before I even offered it, I think he knew I was going to." SRK went on to reprise the role in Don 2 (2011), also directed by Farhan, further cementing his unique interpretation of the character. In 2023, Farhan announced Don 3 with Ranveer Singh stepping into the titular role. However, the film has yet to go on floors and has faced multiple delays. Rumours of another postponement circulated recently, but the production house denied them in November 2024. Shah Rukh Khan stepped into the shoes of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan when he played the lead role in Farhan Akhtar's remake of the 1978 film Don. Released in 2006, Don starred SRK in the titular role and Farhan recently shared that SRK's 'personality was tailor-made for that part.' He spoke about traits of Shah Rukh's personality that perfectly fitted his own imagination of Don, and added that SRK was not scared of the comparisons that he might have to face. At the Waves Summit, when Farhan was asked about casting Shah Rukh in Don, he said, 'Shah Rukh's personality was tailor made for that part. We became friends just after Dil Chahta Hai when we started spending some time together so from 2001 onwards, pretty much till 2005, when he said yes to doing Don, we had spent many evenings together. When I started writing it, I was convinced it had to be him. His sense of humour, self deprecating style… he can be very charming even while being menacing, all this was inherently in the character so I never even thought about going to anyone else.' Farhan said that even for Shah Rukh, Don was a big deal as he too, was a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan. 'For him, Don is massive. He is a huge fan of the film Don. He is huge fan of Mr Bachchan so to step into those shoes, to step into that role was very exciting for him,' he said. When Farhan was asked about his alternate plan, in case Shah Rukh refused because of the potential comparisons with the original, he said, 'I don't think Shah Rukh is scared of things like that. I think he is very very confident in his ability.' He then shared that SRK had been expecting that Farhan would come to him with this role and shared, 'We had been spending so much time together. I had told him that I am writing this. He was very excited. Before I told him, he was prepared that I will go to him. I think he was ready.' Their outfits sparked nostalgia among fans and reminded them of their iconic 2006 film, Don. But how? Shah Rukh and Priyanka's Met Gala outfits held an uncanny resemblance to what they wore at a promotional event for Don. Flaunting her baby bump, her dress featured a heart-shaped gold breastplate around the strapless neckline that was connected to another gold-plated mini heart on the waist with a chain, referring to the umbilical cord.
