Dept Q star looks completely different in forgotten Call the Midwife role

Netflix's new drama Dept Q stars Leah Byrne as cadet Rose - however, some fans may recognise the Scottish actress for her role in an episode of BBC One's Call the Midwife Netflix's brand new crime drama Dept Q arrived today on the streamer, starring Downton Abbey's Matthew Goode as a detective attempting to track down the mysterious criminal who shot him in the face. After returning back to his Edinburgh police station for the first time since the attack, Carl (Goode) is tasked with setting up Department Q - a cold case unit - while he covertly tries to investigate the crime himself. In his new team, Carl is joined by Rose - a cadet who is keen to prove herself to Carl - played by Scottish actress Leah Byrne. The actress has just a few credits under her belt, including small roles in BBC drama Nightsleeper and Channel 4's Deadwater Fell. ‌ ‌ However, before taking on the role of Rose, Leah appeared in a 2019 episode of Call the Midwife as Maggie Nickle - an expectant mother. With a brunette head of hair, Leah couldn't look more different in the BBC role. Meanwhile, in Dept. Q, Leah sports a ginger perm as rookie detective Rose. Leah isn't the only unrecognisable star in Dept Q. Matthew Goode takes on a scruffy look and a beard for his role as DCI Carl Morck. Speaking about the Netflix drama ahead of its release, Matthew said of Carl: "He's so aggressive and rude. I loved his sense of humour. He's a complex character, and you get to see him warts and all." ‌ He added that he was hooked on the character from the moment he was sent the script. "Scott could have cast anybody,' Matthew said. 'When someone trusts you like that, you take it seriously. There was pressure but, as Billie Jean King said, 'Pressure is a privilege.'' Matthew opened up about one scene, where he needed to drive an old Ford Sierra with dodgy brakes. 'Every time Scott told me to drive fast, I'd be thinking, 'I hope it stops and I don't plough into anyone,'' says Matthew. 'Occasionally, I'd turn the car off and walk away, then I'd hear it start again and have to give it a kick.' ‌ The series also stars The Queen's Gambit actress Chloe Pirrie as Merritt - an ambitious lawyer whose disappearance is investigated by Carl. "Merritt's main strength is she doesn't feel the need to please people," Chloe said. "She's loyal, someone you'd want on your side, but she's also isolated herself. She uses people and doesn't think that highly of them. She's similar to Carl in that way." Dept Q is now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix's Dept. Q ending, that left Matthew Goode in tears, explained

Dept. Q ends on an dramatic note, and one that is so emotional even lead star Matthew Goode found himself in tears, he tells Yahoo Netflix thriller follows detective Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) who returns to work after surviving an attack that left his partner paralysed and another officer dead. The grizzly English cop isn't well liked in the Edinburgh force, and to keep him out of the way he's assigned his own cold case department where he and a motley crew of outsiders decide to look into the mysterious disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie) four years earlier. Goode was moved to tears by the chain of events in the series, with the actor sharing: "Actually I found it really moving, I was quietly surprised at how it all sort of came together. "I remember I was just doing some ADR where we re-record dialogue and Scott [Frank, the show's creator] was like, 'would you like to watch this?' And I was like, 'OK'. He doesn't normally do that so I think he was quietly proud of it. And, yeah, I shed a tear, I did." The Downton Abbey star joked that he was emotional because he thought "'Thank God it works!'" The story centres on Carl and his team trying to find out what happened to Merritt Lingard, who disappeared off a ferry four years earlier under mysterious circumstances. Most have written her off as having died by suicide after jumping of the boat, but Carl, Akram (Alexej Manvelov) and Rose (Leah Byrne) are convinced she could still be alive and want to piece together what happened. The trio, it turns out, are right, and Merritt has been kidnapped and held in a pressurised container by two people who are determined to make her guess for herself why she was taken. Merritt is kept there for years as she counts all the people she wronged or hurt in her life, eventually landing on the answer as the clock begins to run out. Merritt was taken by mother and son duo Ailsa and Lyle Jennings (Alison Peebles and Steven Miller), who committed the crime because they blame Merritt for the death of Lyle's older brother Harry. The teen died whilst trying to escape custody after he'd robbed Merritt's house and beaten her brother so badly he could no longer speak. Ailsa believe it's Merritt who put Harry, her then boyfriend, up to committing the robbery, thus starting the chain of events that led to his death, but Merritt sees it differently and refuses to take the blame. As time runs out on Merritt's survival, Carl and Akram put the pieces together successfully — realising that Lyle Jennings posed as journalist Sam Haig to seduce Merritt, gain her trust and kidnap her. Carl and Akram manage to get to the location where Merritt is being kept just in time to stop her from being killed in the pressurised container. The pair kill Lyle in the process and save Merritt, and Ailsa dies by suicide when she realises what the police have done. Goode adds that Pirrie deserved credit for such a "powerful" and "brave performance" as Merritt, to which his co-star Byrne said: "She was so incredible, I met Chloe on the first day when we were doing costume and makeup fittings, and met her in the green room and we had an hour to get to know each other, chat, and then I just didn't see her again. She was alone for the whole thing." Goode joked: "Well I said to her 'it would be really nice to work with you someday!'" "So it's so great to see what she's done," Byrne adds. "It's so incredible. She's done such an incredible job." The series sees Merritt return to normal life, revealing she will return home with her brother and reconnect with her estranged father. In the meantime Dept. Q get back up and running, with James Hardy [Jamie Sives], Carl's partner, returning to the force in the very last scene. This was another moment that left Goode emotional, as he said: "It's also Jamie's character, bless his little cotton socks." Dept. Q is out now on Netflix.

Netflix's remake of hit Nordic crime drama with Line of Duty star airs tonight

Dept. Q is arriving on Netflix today, with Downton Abbey's Matthew Goode starring as an arrogant detective who must lead a team of misfits in cracking an Edinburgh cold case Brand new crime drama Dept. Q is landing tonight (Thursday 29 May) on Netflix - with Downton Abbey's Matthew Goode starring in this adaptation of a Nordic hit. Based on the book series by Jussi Adler-Olsen, which has been adapted into numerous Danish films, the new series follows a detective as he's tasked with opening a cold case unit after leading an investigation that went horribly wrong. With the likes of Line of Duty's Kelly Macdonald, The Game's Chloe Pirrie and Harry Potter's Shirley Henderson taking on roles in this new Netflix offering, the nine-part thriller will give crime fans something to dig their teeth into this evening. ‌ Pick of the Day Dept. Q, Netflix Downton Abbey actor Matthew Goode stars as a bristly detective in this new crime drama, adapted from a successful series of Danish novels. The action has been translated from Copenhagen to Edinburgh, where we meet DCI Carl Morck (Goode), a gifted crime solver, whose arrogance has got the better of him. ‌ Morck and his partner made the mistake of visiting a murder scene that wasn't ever assigned to them. After belittling the uniformed officers holding the fort there, they examined the body, without realising that the killer was lurking in the shadows. As a result, a young copper died on the job, and Morck's partner was left paralysed. Morck managed to make a physical recovery, but is haunted by every detail of that day and determined to seek justice. When he returns to the station, his whispering colleagues don't want to talk to him and getting back to work isn't as easy as he'd hoped. His boss is under pressure to improve the public image of the force, and is strongarmed into opening a cold case unit, called Department Q. It's a PR exercise rather than a legitimate new arm of the force, and much like Slough House in Apple TV's hit Slow Horses, this is somewhere to shove employees who have fallen out of favour. It's the perfect assignment for Morck – he may be unpopular, but his intellectual brilliance and unique approach could solve a few impossible cases. Also starring Kelly McDonald as Morck's spiky therapist, Dr Rachel Irving. Best of the Rest ‌ Britain Under The Nazis: The Forgotten Occupation, Channel 4, 8pm Marking the 80 th anniversary of the liberation of the Channel Islands, this documentary tells the story of the Brits who lived under Nazi occupation during World War 2. With actors bringing to life memoirs, diary entries and letters, we hear the voices of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney residents who were stunned when German soldiers moved onto their islands in 1940. A feather in Hitler's cap, and a source of embarrassment for Churchill, these British territories were left undefended, and nobody quite knew what would happen next. Some anticipated the horrors to come and fled, but for those left behind they needed to decide whether to collaborate with their new neighbours or stage their own acts of resistance. With the local press under censorship, and a thick atmosphere of fear and suspicion, individual acts of courage shone through the darkness. Featuring analysis from historians, this programme is a chance to celebrate forgotten heroes. Interior Design Masters With Alan Carr, BBC1, 8pm It's the final, and either teacher John or visual merchandiser Rita is set to win a fabulous prize – the opportunity to design their own homeware range with John Lewis. The deciding challenge takes them to Portmeirion, the location of classic TV series The Prisoner, and a quirky Welsh village famed for its enigmatic architecture and design. Drawing influence from the colourful local buildings and artwork, John and Rita must each renovate a two-bedroom holiday cottage. They have a budget of £6500, three days to work and the help of former competitors Craig and Briony to get them across the finish line. John is channelling the Mediterranean with lemons on the wall and bold colours, while Rita wants a cosy chocolate box vibe. Guest judge, designer Sophie Robinson is famed for her vibrant maximalist designs, so she'll be looking for a cottage that screams 'more is more'. But who will she name the winner? ‌ EastEnders, BBC1, 7.30pm It's been a shocking week in Walford, but there's much more drama in store. The consequences of the car crash are still playing out and the survivors are coming to terms with what has just happened to them. Meanwhile, back in Albert Square, shockwaves continue to ripple in the wake of Vicki's bombshell at No. 1. The impact of her outburst floors Barney, who already has a lot to get his head around after the kiss with Avani. Emmerdale, ITV, 7.30pm Jacob insists that Sarah is selfish for wanting a baby at this point in her life. He's shocked to learn that nobody else knows the reality of her situation. ‌ John's mental torture continues, as he panics that the wedding won't go ahead. Moira worries about the truth coming out, and fears that Lewis has too much power over her future freedom. The tension between Dawn and Billy is taking its toll. Joe has a plan to make life easier.
