NFL QB legend Drew Brees claims he would be a 'top three analyst' right now if he had a job... despite unceremonious NBC exit

Years after his flaming out of a broadcast booth for NBC, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees believes that he is currently one of the best in the business. After his retirement at the end of the 2020 season, Brees was slotted into the booth for a playoff game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022. The result left much to be desired, however, the choice to put Brees in the booth for only the second time in his career during a game of those proportions was a head-scratcher from NBC. So with that lack of experience weighing him down, Brees believes that - with more time - he'd be one of the best in the league right now. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show on Friday, Brees surprisingly suggested that he's one of the three best analysts in the NFL - right now. 'I'd step in the booth right now and be a top-three guy, without question,' Brees told the veteran sports radio host. 'And then give me a few years and I could be the best.' Why is that? Brees says, 'I love the game. I love talking about the game. I feel like I have an insight to the game that is pretty unique given my playing experience. I see the game a totally different way, I process it a different way. 'So even as I watch games now, I listen to the commentary, and this and that, and what I'm seeing, I just feel like there's so much more to add.' This confidence is particularly surprising because Brees has yet to return to a broadcast booth to call any games after leaving in May of 2022. Now, there is no question as to Brees' ability to read the game and understand it - considering he's a Super Bowl champion and two-time Offensive Player of the Year. However, knowing sports and being able to broadcast sports well are two wildly different things. Tom Brady arguably knows more about the sport than anyone else, considering his incredibly long tenure in the league. But even he had plenty of kinks to iron out of his commentary style in his first season in the booth last year. Confidence is important for an analyst, but so is experience and ability to deliver the most information in a short window. Just because someone knows a lot about the game does not at all make someone a great broadcaster for the game. There's a delicate balance to the dance that Brees did not have in the 2021 season. Without any additional significant experience live on air since then, it's hard to see or believe how he's vaulted himself up from a victim of circumstance to being at - or above - the likes of Greg Olsen or Cris Collinsworth or Troy Aikman or Kirk Herbstreit or Tony Romo (or even Brady). Brees has been tapped to call one of Netflix's Christmas Day doubleheader games this season. Last year, he worked the pre-game and post-game shows for the streaming giant.

Saints Play of the Day: Drew Brees surpasses 60,000 career yards on a 27-yard TD

The New Orleans Saints played their first preseason game on Sunday, but the start of the regular season is 27 days away. Our Saints Play of the Day for today celebrates a pass that brought Drew Brees past an impressive milestone. A decade ago, facing the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, Brees connected with Brandin Cooks for a 27-yard touchdown that helped the passer reach 60,000 career yards. At the time, Brees was just the fourth quarterback ever to reach the mark. You can watch the play for yourself here. There have only been nine quarterbacks to pass 60,000 career passing yards. There will be 10 by the end of this year, though, as Matthew Stafford is less than 200 yards away from the mark. He's now one of four who have at least 70,000 and one of two with 80,000. Brees was the top passer in NFL history at one point, ending his career with 80,358 yards. Now, Tom Brady is the only player above him at 89,214. Brees will be remembered by Saints fans as one of, if not the best, pure passers in the sport's history. He may not have always gotten the recognition in terms of awards, but the numbers speak for themselves. The other player involved in that play, Cooks, is now back in New Orleans and hoping to turn back the clock and perform again 10 years later. He hasn't been in a Saints uniform since 2016. The expectations won't be as high for him now as he will be the third receiver in the new room with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

WATCH: Demario Davis delivers his first pregame speech of the Saints preseason

It's the first preseason matchup of the New Orleans Saints' 2025 season, and with that, they take on the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. As always, Saints legend Demario Davis brings the heat with his pre-game speech, as he has done ever since Drew Brees retired a few years ago. Davis has done exceptionally well at firing up the team before each game, and has handled the responsibility well following up another franchise legend in Brees. His message for this matchup? The Saints don't have to deal with the opponent; they have to deal with the Saints and focus on dominating their opponent in all aspects of the game. With the preseason kicking off, everyone will get the opportunity to see how this Saints roster performs under a completely new coaching staff. As youth takes the forefront over pretty much all else, it will be interesting to see who among the roster takes spots by Week 1, and who will be cut ahead of the season. Drew Brees makes a surprising comparison to this young QB

Drew Brees makes a surprising comparison to this young QB originally appeared on The Sporting News There will never be another Drew Brees. The former New Orleans Saints quarterback and future Hall of Famer still casts a huge shadow in New Orleans. Since his retirement, the Saints have struggled to find his replacement. Three quarterbacks are vying for Brees' old position: Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough and Jake Haener. Although Brees says he likes all three, the one he says is more like him is Haener. 'It's a pretty unique situation, if you just look at the youth across the board,' Brees said via Thursday, while in town to promote the NOLA Pickleball Event. 'Obviously, there was a lot of excitement in drafting Tyler Shough, and I felt like Spencer Rattler did some great things last year. And Jake Haener, his (playing) style, his stature, everything reminds me of a lot of myself. … So we'll see how the competition shakes out. It seems like it's been a pretty eventful camp so far.' Brees added,'I'm sure the Saints will take a much different approach than most teams do when it comes to starters, mainly the QBs,' he said. 'Some teams barely play their QB starters trying to keep healthy for the regular season. But (with) these guys, every rep is so valuable, both in practice and scrimmages. All those (reps) are so valuable just to feel like you're getting game-like reps.' Haener, like his predecessor Derek Carr, is a Fresno State guy. After Carr got injured, the Saints played both him and Rattler, who is expected to battle for the starting QB position. Most Saints fans were hoping before the season started that they would draft Cam Ward or Shedur Sanders, but they seem to be content with the three they have on the roster right now. Some think they may be holding out for Texas quarterback Arch Manning whose grandfather Archie played for the Saints back in the 70s til the early 80s.

Drew Brees makes sandwiches with kids at Jimmy John's in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees is known for giving back, especially to kids. He's also celebrating the launch of his new Jimmy John's sandwich, 'The #9,' just like his football number. Drew Brees talks Hall of Fame ballot, Saints QB battle and third annual Pickle Fest On Friday, he joined kids from the Boys & Girls Club at the Jimmy John's that he owns on Poydras Street. The Saints legend and the kids made 'The #9,' a custom version of the Italian Night Club, exactly the way Drew orders it, with peppers and hold the cheese. 'People ask about pre-game traditions and we would cater Jimmy John's to the Saints facility every Saturday after our meetings and walkthroughs. Everyone would come in and grab Jimmy John's and go into the locker room and the guys would be sitting eating Jimmy John's near their lockers, so that's kind of a unique element that a lot of people probably don't know,' Brees said. At Friday's event, the Jimmy John's Foundation presented a $250,000 to the Brees Foundation and a $150,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Posts Parent, student face charges after BB gun allegedly brought on Loranger school property Drew Brees makes sandwiches with kids at Jimmy John's in New Orleans Mexico deploys US-trained police unit to Arizona border State trooper fires weapon following New Orleans chase: LSP Human case of West Nile virus detected in Orleans Parish Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
