John Martin snatches draw for Shels against Bohs in rollercoaster derby

John Martin repeated his midweek European heroics against Bohemians as his 90th minute header snatched a share of the spoils for Shelbourne in an enthralling Dublin Derby. Martin towered above all at the back post to power home Sean Gannon's cross and keep the Reds firmly in the race for a European return next season. Bohemians fell behind early to Daniel Kelly's finish but goals from Connor Parsons and Dawson Devoy looked to have clinched victory for Alan Reynolds' charges who have let five points slip from their last two games leaving their European hopes in the balance. Bohs remain second but just eight points separate them and St Patrick's Athletic in sixth. There is no love lost between these two sides and Shelbourne skipper Mark Coyle set the tone for a pulsating first half when he was booked for a rash challenge on Dawson Devoy inside 30 seconds. Joey O'Brien made eight changes from his side's famous midweek European win in Croatia but his team couldn't be faulted for a lack of cohesion and were in front after four minutes courtesy of a precise Kelly finish. Mipo Odubeko fired a ball across the box and Kelly pipped Jordan Flores to the punch and swept a left footed effort into the top corner. The early fireworks continued as Bohs levelled in fortuitous circumstances after 11 minutes. Lewis Temple played a blind back pass with Wessel Speel having drifted out of his goalmouth and Connor Parsons slid in to tap home - the Gypsies only shot on target in the first half. Odubeko should have put Shelbourne back in front immediately, bearing down on goal he went for power and Kacper Chorazka stood tall to brilliantly tap the ball over. Shelbourne made another quick start to the second half and should have gone back in front. Kelly's dinked pass found Odubeko who turned and shot from ten yards but it was straight at Chorazka. Shels will wonder how they didn't find a second when Kameron Ledwidge saw his goal bound shot blocked by Leigh Kavanagh as Bohemians survived some pinball in the area. The hosts were punished for their profligacy in front of goal. Bohs recycled a poorly taken corner and Devoy did the rest, Cruyff-turning Odubeko on the end line before his effort trickled into the net via a Temple deflection. O'Brien has had the midas touch since replacing Damien Duff in the Reds hotseat and his summoning of Martin to proceedings looked like another genius move as the striker powered a header home at the back post to set up a grandstand finish. John Martin can't stop scoring!🤩 Shels are level🔴 — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) August 9, 2025 Shels were almost architects of their own downfall again as Douglas James-Taylor pounced on Kerr McInroy's loose pass but Speel heroically denied him and ensured his side nicked a point.

Bohs and St Pat's play out stalemate to leave Stephen Kenny winless in six matches

Premier Division: St Patrick's Athletic 0 Bohemians 0 Park life. St Patrick's Athletic turn their attention to European football without a win in six matches. The 4,919 crowd inside Richmond Park were served everything but a goal to decide in this engrossing Dublin derby. Dayle Rooney and Ross Tierney went close for Bohemians but far too many St Pat's players missed the target. As Richard Ashcroft finished his set in Cardiff with Bitter Sweet Sympathy, Bohs were peacocking their new FAI Cup strip and the iconic Oasis logo around Dublin 8. READ MORE The Verve lead singer was opening for the seismic return of Noel and Liam Gallagher at The Principality stadium, the first gig of a lucrative second coming for the Manchester band. This was no cup match though. Bohs made an exception to show off their latest piece of innovative marketing. The sky-blue Oasis gear should help fill the club's coffers when Dalymount Park is under construction. Besides the stadium DJ playing Blur tunes at every opportunity, the Brit Pop revival was never going to overshadow the football. Not around Inchicore, where there was plenty at stake for Stephen Kenny's men coming off a winless June. 'We cannot believe ourselves that we have had such a poor two weeks,' wrote Kenny in his programme notes after St Pat's missed an 'inordinately high number of chances' to leave them in a comparable situation to last season when the former Republic of Ireland manager was recruited midseason. Kenny turned the tide in July 2024 as his team embarked on a run to the precipice of the Uefa Conference League group stages. That journey begins again on Thursday with the visit of Hegelmann from Lithuania. St Pat's created the better chances in the opening half-hour only for Bohs centre half Rob Cornwall to deny Aidan Keena and Simon Power. However, the visitors should have taken the lead in the 38th minute when new signing Douglas James-Taylor blazed over a cut back by James Clarke. James-Taylor arrived from Drogheda United this week to replace French striker Lys Mousset, who was unceremoniously released by Bohemians. St Pat's should have led at the break only Power's effort missed the target before Jason McClelland slammed a shot off the crossbar. Half-time welcomed dozens of kids on to the Richmond grass to the sound of Blur's Song 2. Kenny benched teenager Mason Melia and winger Zach Elbouzedi following last week's scoreless draw in Cork while their creative force, Chris Forrester, continues to return from injury. All three eventually arrived but the sight of Jake Mulraney limping off, holding his hamstring, is not what Kenny needs before a European campaign. The excellent Power put the ball in the Bohs net early in the second-half only for a premature linesman's flag for offside. Replays confirmed the match official's error. With Dawson Devoy being smothered by Barry Baggley in midfield, The Saints seemed certain to break the deadlock. Somehow Jordan Flores cleared Kian Leavy's toe poke off the goal line. That did it for Kenny. Melia arrived on the hour for Keena. The under-21 international showed for every ball, mostly supplied by Leavy, but Cornwall held firm. Ultimately, the poor quality of St Pat's final pass summed up their season so far. Elsewhere, with Shamrock Rovers facing Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds on Saturday night, Derry City closed the gap at the top to eight points with an emphatic 7-2 defeat of Waterford while the post-Damien Duff era at Tolka Park formally began as Joey O'Brien's Shelbourne beat Cork City 3-1. St Patrick's Athletic: Anang; McLaughlin (Kavanagh 75), Redmond, Grivosti, McClelland; Lennon, Baggley (Forrester 80); Power, Leavy (Sjoberg 75), Mulraney (Elbouzedi 80); Keena (Melia 61). Bohemians: Chorazka; Smith (Mountney 71), Cornwall, Flores, Morahan; Devoy, McDonnell (Buckley 71); Tierney, Clarke, Rooney; James-Taylor (Whelan 71). Referee: Rob Hennessy.

Stephen Bradley reveals what sets ‘student of the game' Keith Andrews apart after being appointed Brentford head coach

That goal Bradley said: 'He should have started, I'm sure he feels the same. 'He was brilliant here against Cork City last Friday. 'I know he's really annoyed he doesn't start tonight and that's the hardest part of this job is leaving good people like that out of the squad, obviously good players, but good people too, out of the team and out of the squad and I knew he was annoyed, rightly so. But he's played at the level he's played at for such a long time because of his character and how professional he is and I knew once you call upon him, he'll be ready. And he was. 'I thought he played like he has done all year, to be fair, so I'm sure he's cursing me but he comes on and wins us the game.' The victory extended Rovers' lead at the top of the Premier Division from nine points before kick-off to 11 afterwards, thanks to Bohemians dropping two points at home against Sligo Rovers. Bradley also praised his players for bouncing back from Monday's Dublin Derby defeat by the Gypsies that brought an end to an 11-game unbeaten run. 'We've been that good this year, but we were miles off our levels and that's what annoyed us. 'You can win and lose games, that's football . Bohs keep title race alive as they earn third Dublin Derby win of season

Premier Division: Bohemians 2 (Rooney 2, Clarke 39) Shamrock Rovers 0 First-half goals from Dayle Rooney and James Clarke were decisive as Bohemians earned their third Dublin Derby win of the season over pace-setters Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division at Dalymount Park last night. Adding to previous victories at the Aviva Stadium and Tallaght Stadium on February 16th and April 21st respectively, Bohs produced an excellent team performance to once again claim the bragging rights over their arch rivals. The starting line-up Rovers boss Stephen Bradley selected for this game showed no fewer than eight changes from the side that earned a convincing 4-1 victory against Cork City in Tallaght last Friday. Bohs supremo Alan Reynolds kept faith with much of the team from a 2-1 defeat to his former club Waterford three days earlier, but Liam Smith, John Mountney and Clarke were given a chance to impress. Clarke was operating in a false nine role in the Gypsies attack and he played a crucial part in their blistering opening to the action. READ MORE Capitalising on some hesitancy from Rovers defender Roberto Lopes, the outstretched boot of Clarke flicked the ball into the direction of Rooney and he proceeded to drill a powerful strike beyond the reach of Ed McGinty with less than two minutes gone on the clock. This was a dream start for a Bohs side who were playing with the aid of strong breeze in the first half and they continued to dictate matters against a Rovers outfit who were struggling to get a foothold in the play. The hosts played with energy and desire throughout the opening period, and were close to doubling their account when a spectacular long-distance drive from Mountney marginally cleared the crossbar inside the second-quarter. Yet a ravenous Bohs maintained their search for a second goal and ultimately enhanced their lead in the 39th minute. After he had linked up superbly with Dawson Devoy, Ross Tierney crossed enticingly from the right-flank and although Hoops centre-half Daniel Cleary initially got his foot to the ball, it rebounded off the waiting Clarke for a second Gypsies goal. This left Rovers staring into a 2-0 interval deficit and having scored a brace as a starter in that comfortable triumph against Cork City on Friday, Michael Noonan was introduced upon the resumption as the visitors desperately sought a way back into contention. Former Bohs duo Dylan Watts and Daniel Mandroiu were also added to the mix on 53 minutes, but despite Watts forcing a fine save out of custodian Kacpet Chorazka not long after he had replaced Jack Byrne, the Gypsies' two-goal cushion remained intact on the hour mark. While there had been a noticeable increase in tempo from the Rovers, they were nevertheless finding it difficult to create clear-cut opportunities against their long-time rivals. In fact, Lopes had to come to the rescue of the Hoops on 73 minutes with his goal-line clearance preventing Devoy from securing what would have been an insurance goal. Yet even though there were six additional minutes played, Bohs held firm to move nine points adrift of Rovers in the Premier Division standings with two games in hand. The Gypsies now find themselves second in the top-flight table after a goal deep into stoppage-time by Cork City's Djenairo Daniels ensured Drogheda United had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Leesiders at Turner's Cross. Goals from Jad Hakiki and Francely Lomboto helped Sligo Rovers to record a 2-1 Connacht derby win at the expense of Galway United, while a 29th minute effort by Liam Boyce earned Derry City a 1-0 triumph over St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park. BOHEMIANS: Chorazka; Smith, Cornwall, Morahan, Mountney; Flores, McDonnell (Buckley, 64 mins); Tierney, Devoy, Rooney; Clarke. SHAMROCK ROVERS: McGinty; Cleary (Ozhianvuna, 81 mins), Lopes, Grace (Kovalevskis, 88 mins); McEneff (Mandroiu, 53 mins), Grant, Healy, Honohan; Byrne (Watts, 53 mins), Burke; Greene (Noonan, 46 mins). Referee: K O'Sullivan (Cork).

Roberto Lopes reveals key to Shamrock Rovers winning their Dublin derby against Bohemians

ROBERTO 'Pico' Lopes has played for both sides — so he knows just how big the Dublin Derby is. The Cape Verde defender, 33, spent six years with Bohemians before making the short trip across town. 2 The Shamrock Rovers captain has plenty of Dublin derby experience over the years 2 The late drama in the last derby didn't go in the favour of Lopes and Shamrock Rovers And now the Shamrock Rovers skipper is desperate to get one over on his old club, especially after suffering home-and-away defeats to them this season. But Lopes also insists it is just one more game as the Hoops seek to increase their 11-point lead at the top of the Premier Division. The rivals clash at Dalymount Park tonight and Lopes reckons he knows what is needed to get his men over the line. He said: 'It always has been since I started football — Bohs v Rovers, it's probably the biggest game on the calendar. Read more on League of Ireland 'We can't get caught up too much in the occasion, though. 'It's an important game for us in terms of trying to build on this momentum and keep going and get the three points. 'But yeah, I suppose it's the biggest game in Irish football for me. 'You have to take the madness out of it at times. It's going to be there. It's going to be 100 miles an hour at times. Most read in Football 'But you need to be able to take a breath and put your foot on the ball and show your quality.' Rovers' quality came to the fore again on Friday with Lopes scoring a crucial second against Cork City, powering home a Dylan Watts delivery in a 4-1 win. Salernitana fans throw objects including seats on pitch during play-off clash The centre-half was hauled off at the break, with boss Stephen Bradley citing 'a heavy load recently' for his captain. That win meant the Hoops' unbeaten run stretched to 11 games. Now they face the last team to beat them — when Rhys Brennan bagged a late, late winner in a crazy 3-2 game on the Easter weekend. Lopes feels the group has grown since then and will be praying for a better outcome tonight. He added: 'I think we have gotten stronger as the league has gone on. The performances and results have shown that. But we can't take our foot off the gas. 'If you start getting carried away yourself, that's where you get pegged back. So, look, we've been good. We need to be better. 'Hopefully we're on the right side of the result this time. Look, you can't control what happens. "We were disappointed to lose the game back here at Easter. That's behind us. We moved on. And yeah, we're just focused on trying to win the game.' TURNING THE TIDE Bohs beat Rovers 1-0 in the season opener at the Aviva before their dramatic victory in April. But Lopes has been around long enough to know how valuable his experience, and that of his team-mates, will be in a cauldron-like atmosphere. He said: 'I probably sound like a broken record but I think form goes out the window in these games. I always say it. We know it's going to be a tough game, especially going over there. 'We know how hostile it can be. So yeah, we just have to be prepared mentally going into that and play the game in front of us. 'But I think, yeah, my experience tells me that you have to be ready for the fight, ready for the battle, start games fast. 'There's going to be times where you have to take the madness out of it and show our quality as well. Be brave on the ball. That'll be key.'
