FDA: Celery Sold at Walmart Recalled Over Potentially ‘Fatal' Bacteria

Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc. is recalling its Marketside Celery Sticks over listeria concerns. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert, advising customers to immediately discontinue use and discard any products included in the recall. Learn which lots are affected, below. It may be time to double-check your produce drawer because another food recall has consumers on high alert. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a recall of celery over a potentially 'fatal' bacterial contamination. Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc. issued the voluntary recall of the affected produce on April 10, 2025, according to the announcement shared on the FDA website, warning customers about a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The April 2025 recall involves pre-cut, washed, and ready-to-eat Marketside Celery Sticks distributed to Walmart stores across more than half the country. The celery in question was sold in four-count, 1.6-ounce packs that include a Best If Used By date of 03/23/2025 on the package. While the FDA notes that the celery has been removed from store shelves and is past its best-by date, affected product could still be in consumers' freezers. In addition to the best-if-used-by date, the FDA says you'll need to look for Lot Code: P047650, which should appear on the front of the celery's packaging. The company says it became aware of a possible contamination after a random test performed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture came back positive. According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes can cause 'serious and sometimes fatal' infections in the very young and the very old, or those with certain pre-existing health conditions. It may cause symptoms that range from mild to severe, and include stiffness, abdominal pains and diarrhea, fever, headache, and more. Those who are pregnant are also at an increased risk. Listeria monocytogenes may cause pregnancy loss or even stillbirth. As such, it's crucial to check both your refrigerator and freezer to make sure that you don't have the recalled items in your possession. Fortunately, the FDA says that no illnesses have been reported in relation to this recall at the time of the announcement. Anyone with questions about the recall should contact the company directly by emailing foodsafety@ You can also get more information, including a full list of the states these products were distributed to, by visiting the FDA website. If it feels like there have been a lot of product recalls lately, that's because there have been. But, that doesn't mean that our foods are any less safe. Experts previously told Prevention that a combination of factors is causing these product recalls, including more robust testing, better methods to detect food safety issues sooner, staffing issues, and a rise in ready-to-eat foods like these celery sticks, which present more opportunities for bacteria like Listeria monocytogenes to grow. Celery Sticks Recalled In 28 States Due To Possible Contamination. Here's What You Should Know.

Duda Farm Fresh Foods has recalled over 1,500 cases of celery sticks distributed to Walmart stores across the country due to a possible contamination of the bacteria listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced Thursday. The company has recalled its ready-to-eat four-pack of 1.6-ounce Marketside Celery Sticks that were distributed to Walmart stores in 28 states, as well as Washington, D.C. The product in question has a lot code ofP047650 and the followinguniversal product code or UPC: 6 81131 16151 0. The FDA notes that while the recalled product is no longer sold in stores, its 'Best If Used By' date of '03/23/2025' had passed prior to the recall announcement, so it's possible that consumers may still have the product in their possession — including in their freezers. The now-recalled item was distributed to select Walmart stores in the following states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming. The FDA said the recall was initiated after 'the potential for contamination' was discovered after a positive test result was yielded during a random sampling conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The agency said that customers who purchased the affected item should not consume it, and should discard the product. No illnesses had been reported in connection to the recall at the time of the announcement. The agency also said that no other Marketside products, or other products of Duda Farm Fresh Foods, were included in the recall. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause listeriosis — a type of food poisoning. The Cleveland Clinic lists other types of foods that are considered more likely to be contaminated with Listeria: deli meats, pureed meats, unpasteurized fruit juices, raw sushi, sprouts and unpasteurized dairy products. Read on to hear more information about listeriosis and symptoms to look out for: The Mayo Clinic states that healthy people 'rarely become ill' from listeria infection, and that 'prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects.' Common symptoms of listeriosis include: fever chills muscle aches nausea diarrhea Listeria infection can also cause more severe symptoms — such as stiff neck, confusion and seizures — if the bacteria spreads beyond your digestive system. And the infection can be serious for pregnant women, people over the age 65 and people with weak immune systems, the Mayo Clinic said, emphasizing that pregnant women and people with weak immune symptoms are at the highest risk for contracting the infection. 'If you're pregnant, the infection can pass to the fetus during pregnancy or at birth (vertical transmission),' the Cleveland Clinic states. 'This can cause pregnancy loss or serious, life-long health issues for your child.' The Cleveland Clinic recommends that you see your health care provider if you've recently consumed something that's been recalled due to listeria contamination — especially if you're pregnant. As always, talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about something you've eaten, or any possible symptoms you may be experiencing. Celery recall hits the Carolinas over listeria concerns

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Duda Farm Fresh Foods has issued a precautionary recall this week for a batch of its Marketside Celery Sticks due to possible Listeria contamination. The recall involves 4-count, 1.6 oz bundles of pre-cut celery sold at Walmart stores . The product is labeled with a 'Best if Used by' date of 03/23/2025 and a Lot Code of P047650. The UPC code is '6 81131 16151 0.' Although the celery is past its shelf life and no longer on store shelves, officials said some people might have frozen it for later use. If that's you, go ahead and toss it out. Authorities said the issue came up after a random test in Georgia turned up a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. No illnesses have been reported so far. This recall only affects this specific lot of Marketside celery sticks. No other products from Duda Farm Fresh Foods are reportedly involved.
