Police tighten security as Dundee July festivities draw near

With the much-anticipated Dundee July Horse Racing event this weekend, the South African Police Service in the Umzinyathi District has moved to reassure the public and all stakeholders that comprehensive security plans are firmly in place to ensure a safe and incident-free celebration. Umzinyathi District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, said the SAPS has finalised its operational strategy in partnership with key stakeholders, including the local municipality, private security firms, traffic authorities, emergency medical services, and event organisers. Police visibility will be significantly increased in and around the racecourse, as well as on key routes leading into Dundee. Law enforcement operations will include vehicle checkpoints, high-visibility patrols (both on foot and in vehicles), crime prevention deployments, and crowd management units on standby. In addition, liquor outlets will be monitored and municipal by-laws enforced. 'We appeal to all attendees to work with law enforcement, to celebrate responsibly, and to report any suspicious activity immediately. Our goal is to ensure a safe, enjoyable event for all,' said Slambert. Parents and guardians are urged to closely supervise minors, while motorists are reminded that drinking and driving will not be tolerated. Offences such as public drinking, drug use, and illegal possession of firearms will be dealt with strictly. The SAPS in Umzinyathi remains committed to providing a secure environment, protecting the rights of all, and ensuring that the 2025 Dundee July is remembered for its cultural spirit, not criminal incidents. Scammers pose as municipal staff in WhatsApp scam

There is a scam doing the rounds in Vryheid, where alleged employees of the AbaQulusi Local Municipality threaten to disconnect people's electricity supply due to arrears on municipal accounts. The scammers contact consumers via WhatsApp messages. Ward 8 Councillor Elaine Rodway issued the following statement regarding the scam: 'It has come to my attention that there is a scam taking place within our community (it appears to be mostly in town at the moment), where a man claiming to be from the municipality contacts consumers via WhatsApp to notify them that their electricity is going to be disconnected within the next few hours due to outstanding payment. 'Please be advised that AbaQulusi Municipality will NEVER notify you via WhatsApp of disconnection due to non-payment. 'Please report any incidents of this nature and do not send money to anyone claiming to be from the municipality without proper verification.' Dundee SAPS issues warning about online scams and criminals impersonating police officers

Dundee SAPS are urging residents to be alert following a spike in fraud cases involving online purchases. Community members are advised to verify sellers thoroughly before making payments for goods advertised online. In a separate warning, the police have also cautioned the public about individuals posing as police officers around Dundee shopping centres. These suspects impersonate detectives to scam unsuspecting victims. 'Residents are reminded that real police officers must produce an official appointment certificate when asked. If in doubt, verify their identity by contacting your nearest police station,' said SAPS spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana. Report suspicious activity to Dundee SAPS on 034 299 9700/86 or call 10111. Let's stay alert and united against crime.
