Jim Goodwin eyes fresh Liverpool transfer raid as Dundee United boss tells Luca Stephenson he'd love him back

The versatile midfielder had a successful loan at Tannadice but he's not the only top talent at the Reds who has caught the eye Jim Goodwin wants to bring Luca Stephenson back to Dundee United and also tap further into the Liverpool development ranks. The versatile midfielder had a successful loan at Tannadice and helped the Terrors to clinch a Europa Conference League spot. ‌ United are to open talks about trying to sign Stephenson on a permanent basis but Goodwin has admitted some other Reds have also caught his eye. ‌ Goodwin said: 'I'd love to bring Luca back, but he's under contract at Liverpool, so we'll just need to wait and see what happens with that. 'I speak to their loans manager, Matt Newberry, who I've got a good relationship with. "(Leighton) Clarkson went to Aberdeen, obviously, a couple of years ago. "He was really good to deal with again with regards to bringing Luca up. 'They've got a fantastic academy down there, as you'd imagine, so we'll try and tap into that again in the summer. 'I've already identified a couple of really good ones, but it's just whether we can get them to Scotland or not. ‌ 'It's a relationship that we'll continue to try and work on. They're a great club to deal with.' Goodwin has already made his personal pitch to Stephenson. ‌ He said: 'I had a really good conversation in depth with Luca prior to him leaving. 'He was outstanding for us and deservedly won our Young Player of the Year award. 'We missed him towards the end of the season when he was unavailable. ‌ 'We missed his energy in the middle of the pitch, his ability to break things up and his desire to get forward. 'I thought it was glaringly obvious that we missed his presence in the middle of the park in some of the games.' Goodwin knows Stephenson's loan will aid their cause at Liverpool. ‌ The United boss added: 'Luca's going back down the road speaking positively about his time at Dundee United. 'I think that's the most important thing when these loans come up. 'When they go back down to England, they're talking about the Scottish game and about how they got treated at Dundee United in a positive manner. 'That can only stand us in good stead for the summer, when we have to go and try and do something similar.'

Dundee Utd owner predicts Rangers takeover will change the SPFL game and fix a 'touchy subject' for good

Mark Ogren sees the American takeover at Ibrox as a path to improving Scottish football Dundee United owner Mark Ogren reckons the San Francisco 49ers' involvement with Rangers can up revenue for everyone in Scottish football – and hopes it could even be a step towards lifting the alcohol ban in stadiums. The new era at Ibrox is officially underway with the Andrew Cavenagh-led takeover officially confirmed on Friday after Record Sport exclusively broke the story in April. ‌ It's backed heavily by the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, one of the biggest sport franchises in America, and has already led to significant media interest stateside. ‌ It's the latest example of significant American involvement in Scottish football. Ogren bought a controlling stake in Dundee United in 2018, while businessman Bill Foley has a major stake in Hibs and Tim Keyes has had the reins at Dundee for more than a decade. Ogren, speaking to the New York Times, says he's hopeful the 49ers prominent investment in the Scottish game can drive revenue for more than just Rangers, believing the increased exposure can help put more eyeballs on the Scottish game. Wider than that, however, he's hoping the American input can help improve fan experience on matchdays. ‌ Specifically, as far as Ogren is concerned, by relaxing the alcohol ban that's been in place since 1980. He said: 'I'm hoping the 49ers being involved is going to increase the exposure, but there is definitely scope to increase the revenue. The TV deal is a big thing, but also the culture. The alcohol situation continues to bother me. 'It's absurd. It's a touchy subject, but it is part of the entertainment value for people who come to matches, and they should be able to buy a beer.' Fans in Scotland have been unable to drink at games for 45 years since rioting at the infamous Old Firm at Hampden in 1980. Across the border in England, meanwhile, clubs are able to sell alcohol in stadium concourses. But the idea of a similar relaxation has been met with severe caution at political level in Scotland and seems unlikely to come any time soon.
