UFC fans slam Conor McGregor's latest video amid comeback speculation
The Irishman has been out of action since losing to Dustin Poirier in 2021, but has been hinting at a return to the octagon in recent weeks UFC fans are losing their patience with Conor McGregor after watching new training footage he shared online. The MMA icon - who will be 37 in July - hasn't stepped into the octagon since his defeat to Dustin Poirier in 2021. Last year, the Irishman was due to take on former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler, but withdrew from the clash after picking up an injury in training. It's still uncertain if the former dual-weight champion will return to competitive action. In recent weeks, McGregor has teased a possible comeback by posting videos of his training routines, suggesting he's preparing for a bout. The latest clips show the 'Notorious' working out with heavy weights in the gym. While some supporters are keen on seeing him fight again, others have grown restless and uninterested. His workout video quickly spread across social media, with many heading straight for the comments section to express their doubts. One fan wrote: "We don't care. There're only so many times you can fake a comeback," Another user commented: "Conor's seasonal workout video to make everyone talk about his comeback." A third fan brutally posted "No one cares," while another added: "That's good for him doesn't do anything for fans because he ain't fighting," and another chimed in with: "He's not coming back." Additionally, there were a few who criticised the Irishman's physical state, remaining unconvinced by what they saw. "Ankle not looking real jacked," one fan wrote, while another bluntly added: "Jacked? What are you looking at? He looks like s*** with no muscle maturity," A third chimed in with: "Looks outta shape!" and a fourth observed, "Anyone who lifts knows he's been eating horribly and not working out. Gassed after one set!" The 36-year-old has recently hinted at a return to the ring, stating his condition for a comeback: "I'll only come back to a stadium," he declared. In a taunting move, he also reignited his rivalry with Chandler, posting, "IRON MIKE CHANDLER. Unfinished business." His comments came not long after UFC 314, where he showed interest in the lightweight bout between Chandler and Paddy Pimblett. McGregor posted a video of himself training in Dubai, captioning it with, "I am interested in the Chandler/Pimblett fight this weekend" tagging both the UFC and its owners TKO. The clash eventually saw Pimblett secure a dramatic third-round knockout victory. However, in March, he hinted that his time in the UFC may be coming to an end, stating that he is content with what he has achieved in his fighting career. "I've got two fights on the contract, I'm in negotiations," he said at a BKFC event. "Last week something happened to me, I went to the White House and my heart bleeds for my country right now. So there's a lot of stuff going on back home, I'm happy with what I've done. There's something else for me that's in my gut right now and that's kind of where I'm going."

Charles Oliveira: Dustin Poirier sharpest boxer I've faced, beats Max Holloway at UFC 318
Charles Oliveira: Dustin Poirier sharpest boxer I've faced, beats Max Holloway at UFC 318 Charles Oliveira rates UFC 318 headliner Dustin Poirier's striking very highly. Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) has fought the lightweight division's elite, from the likes of Islam Makhachev, to Arman Tsarukyan, to Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. "Do Bronx" was dropped by Poirier in their lightweight title fight at UFC 269, but rallied to submit him in Round 3. Poirier will step into the octagon for a final time when he challenges BMF champion Max Holloway in the UFC 318 main event on July 19 from his home state of Louisiana. Having fought both Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) and Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC), Oliveira shared his prediction for the fight. "When I fought Holloway, I didn't have the chance to fight because it was too fast because I had an injury," Oliveira told Full Violence in a translated interview. "I think Holloway is a guy who moves a lot, a guy who catches. But man, Dustin Poirier is a guy that I have huge respect for. For me, of all of the guys I've fought, he's the one with the sharpest boxing. He fights more consciously, he has a very heavy hand. He knows how to play the game. He will fight at home practically, so I think Poirier wins." Oliveira will look to reclaim the lightweight title when he takes on Ilia Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant belt in the UFC 317 headliner on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).

Video: UFC fighters describe the painful feeling of mat burn
The UFC's octagon canvas is fantastic for keeping traction, but it's not so great for anything other than the soles of feet. It's something that wrestlers deal with more than strikers, but the dreaded mat burn comes for all fighters at some point. It's an unavoidable aspect of fighting in the UFC. "The octagon canvas is crazy, crazy coarse," American Top Team coach Mike Brown told MMA Junkie. "It is like heavy friction. The UFC canvas, you will not slip on anymore. Back in the day, it used to be different material, but what they've done to it now, it is crazy, hardcore, sandpaper friction. So, you will not slip, but your knees and feet are like hamburger at the end. It's like crazy abrasions all over your legs and elbows." Fighting canvases vary from promotion to promotion, but according to fighters and coaches at ATT, there's nothing worse than the mat burn suffered from the UFC's octagon. "If there's a hell, that's it," UFC lightweight Grant Dawson said. "Mat burn is worse than any injury I've ever had. It's worse than taking a shin to the face. Showering after when you have mat burn is absolutely terrible." . Watch the video above to hear Dawson, Dustin Poirier, Thiago Alves, Mateusz Gamrot, Bo Nickal and more discuss dealing with the pain from mat burn. Between 2011 and 2018, Poirier went 16-4-0-1, picking up notable wins over Max Holloway, Bobby Green, Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez. His losses during that stretch came to The Korean Zombie, Cub Swanson, Conor McGregor, and Michael Johnson. Poirier's wins over Miller, Pettis, Gaethje, and Alvarez set him up to fight for the interim UFC lightweight title against then-UFC featherweight titleholder Max Holloway. Poirier was the No. 3 ranked fighter in the UFC 155-pound division at the time, April 2019. Poirier claimed the interim crown with a decision win. In September 2019, Poirier faced Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout. Nurmagomedov won that contest by third-round submission. Three wins after that, including two TKO victories over Conor McGregor, put Poirier in another lightweight title fight. He lost that battle to Charles Oliveira, falling to a rear-naked choke in the third round of their December 2021 matchup. The 36-year-old Poirier is 2-2 since that setback with wins over Michael Chandler and Benoit Saint Denis. Poirier's losses during that run came against Justin Gaethje for the BMF title and, most recently, opposite Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 in June 2024. Poirier has 15 fight-night bonus awards, which ties him for fourth all-time in that category. Poirier is the No. 5 ranked UFC lightweight. Max Holloway (26-8) has been with the UFC since 2012. If there's a stat that the UFC tracks, chances are Holloway is among the leaders. He holds the UFC featherweight record for wins (20), finishes (11), knockouts (nine), win streak (13 straight), total fight time (6:58:57), significant strikes landed (2,971), and total strikes landed (3,180). Holloway's overall UFC records include significant strikes landed (3,457) and total strikes landed (3,706). Holloway's run as UFC featherweight champ began in June 2017 when he knocked out Jose Aldo. Holloway entered that contest as the interim champ, a belt he won by knocking out Anthony Pettis in December 2016. He defended his title against Aldo (TKO), Brian Ortega (TKO), and Frankie Edgar (decision). He also attempted to win the interim UFC lightweight belt during that run, but he fell short, dropping a decision to Dustin Poirier. Holloway's championship run ended in December 2019 when Alexander Volkanovski beat him by decision. Volkanovski retained the title in an immediate rematch. Wins over Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez earned Holloway another shot at Volkanovski and his title in July 2022, but the champ retained his belt with a decision win. Holloway followed that setback with wins over Arnold Allen, the Korean Zombie, and Justin Gaethje. The Gaethje victory, a fight that many voted 'Fight of the Year' and 'Knockout of the Year,' earned Holloway the BMF title. That fight took place at 155 pounds. Holloway followed his BMF title win with the first knockout loss of his career, falling to Ilia Topuria in a UFC featherweight title fight in October 2024. Holloway is the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC featherweight rankings. He is also ranked at No. 12 at 155 pounds and sits at No. 12 in the pound-for-pound rankings. Poirier is 2-0 against Holloway. They first met in a featherweight scrap at UFC 143 in February 2012. The bout was Holloway's fifth pro fight and first as a member of the UFC. He was 4-0 heading into the contest. Meanwhile, Poirier had been with the WEC/UFC for two years by then with a 11-1 pro record. Poirier won that fight, and earned Submission of the Night, for his first-round triangle armbar stoppage. The two faced off for the second time in April 2019 at UFC 236. That matchup was for the interim UFC lightweight title. Poirier won that 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap. Poirier failed to unify the title, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov by submission at UFC 242 in September 2019. We will have more on the UFC 318 fight card as fight night nears.

Both fighters are coming off losses in title fights, however. Poirier (30-9) submitted to Islam Makhachev last June, while the 33-year-old Holloway (26-8) lost in knockout fashion to Ilia Topuria in October.
