VP Sara Duterte Opposes Online Gambling, Cites Risks to Families and Youth

Vice President Sara Duterte has declared her firm opposition to all forms of online gambling, aligning herself with ongoing proposals in Congress that aim to implement a total ban. Speaking at the 'Free Duterte Now' rally in The Hague, Netherlands, Duterte emphasized that online gambling is dangerous, especially for young people, due to the lack of parental control over internet access. 'I am against online gambling. Hindi ako sang-ayon sa lahat ng klase ng pagsusugal online dahil hindi nakokontrol ng mga magulang ang access ng kanilang mga anak diyaan sa internet,' she said. She warned that online gambling can lead to financial losses and even family debt, noting how easily people can create gambling accounts with little to no restriction. 'Okay ako sa regulated gambling kung saan di lahat nakakasugal, pero kapag nilagay mo siya online… di ako sang-ayon doon dahil nakakasira ng pamilya yun at nakakasira ng kinabukasan ng kabataan,' Duterte added. Her position echoes growing concern in Congress, where several lawmakers from both chambers support a complete ban, believing that regulation alone is not enough to prevent the harmful effects of online gambling. The Department of Health has also weighed in, calling online gambling a public health issue that may impair one's ability to function at work and could even cause personal harm.

Bersamin: No ICC warrant for Bato, but PH authorities will act if there is one

No warrant of arrest has been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Senator "Bato" dela Rosa in relation to the previous administration's war on drugs, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said Sunday. However, should the ICC issue an arrest warrant for the senator through Interpol, Philippine authorities may arrest him, he said. 'Wala (There is none),' Bersamin told reporters who covered the departure of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. for the US at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. 'If there should be a warrant, we'll probably do the same thing that we did in the case of the former president [Rodrigo Duterte], if the warrant is coursed through the Interpol because we continue to be a member of the Interpol," Bersamin said. 'We are not going to do things differently unless the Supreme Court in those pending cases makes a different announcement about how we should proceed,' he added. This move, Bersamin said, is non-discriminatory since it is in accordance with the law. 'Nothing discriminatory that we will ever undertake. We're always clear about that, hindi kami (we're not) politically motivated. All those attributions to us were unfair,' Bersamin said. GMA News Online contacted the office of dela Rosa to get his comment on the matter but has yet to receive a reply as of posting time. The Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide, and Other Crimes Against Humanity stated that Philippine authorities may dispense with the investigation or prosecution if another court or international tribunal is already conducting the investigation. 'Instead, the authorities may surrender or extradite suspected or accused persons in the Philippines to the appropriate international court, if any, or to another State pursuant to the applicable extradition laws and treaties,' the measure read. Dela Rosa, a staunch ally of the Duterte family, served as police chief during former president Rodrigo Duterte's administration. Duterte was arrested in the Philippines by local authorities on March 11 based on a warrant issued by the ICC through Interpol. He is currently detained in the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague for crimes against humanity charges in connection with the killings under his war on drugs when he was mayor of Davao City and when he was president of the Philippines. In March, Dela Rosa was named among the co-perpetrators of Duterte in the war on drugs, as shown in the application of warrant of arrest posted on the ICC website. He was identified as the architect of "Oplan Tokhang," which was first implemented in Davao City when he was then the local police chief. According to police records, drug war deaths totaled about 6,000 Human rights groups however claimed that the death toll was 30,000, including vigilante killings. —KG, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara not in favor of online gambling

Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday expressed her opposition to online gambling amid proposals in Congress for a total ban. 'I am against online gambling. Hindi ako sang-ayon sa lahat ng klase ng pagsusugal online dahil hindi nakokontrol ng mga magulang ang access ng kanilang mga anak diyaan sa internet,' Duterte said during an interview at the Free Duterte Now rally in The Hague, Netherlands. (I am against online gambling. I am not in favor of any type of online gambling because parents could not control the access of their children on the internet.) According to the vice president, online gambling makes it easy for Filipinos to lose money and often puts families in debt. 'Okay ako sa regulated gambling kung saan di lahat nakakasugal, pero kapag nilagay mo siya online kung na hindi na natin macocontrol kung sino makakapagbukas ng account para magsugal, di ako sang-ayon doon dahil nakakasira ng pamilya yun at nakakasira ng kinabukasan ng kabataan,' she added. (I am okay with regulated gambling where not anyone can gamble, but if you place it online where we can no longer control who can open an account to gamble, I am not in favor of that, as it destroys families and it destroys the futures of the youth.) Several lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives have backed proposals seeking an outright ban on online gambling as they believed regulation would not be enough. The Department of Health also said that online gambling is a health issue that can affect a person's capacity to perform his or her job or can even cause harm. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Palace on Imee bill vs. handing over Pinoys to int'l court: Good luck

Malacanang on Thursday wished Sen. Imee Marcos luck on her filing a measure seeking a ban on arresting or detaining any person in the Philippines and then transferring them to the custody of an international tribunal without a warrant from a local court. ''Trabaho naman po ng isang senador na gumawa ng makabuluhan na batas para sa taumbayan, sa ikauunlad ng bansa, hindi para sa pansariling kapakanan,'' Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said. (It is the job of a senator to craft laws that are relevant to the people, for the progress of the country, and not for selfish interests.) In the explanatory note of Senate Bill No. 557, also dubbed the President Rodrigo R. Duterte Act, Imee Marcos called the arrest and turn over of the former president to the International Criminal Court 'abuses by the authorities,' which may also happen to others. "What took place on that fateful day was an extraordinary rendition—the transfer without due process of a detainee to the custody of a foreign jurisdiction," Imee Marcos said. Duterte was arrested in the Philippines by local authorities on March 11, based on a warrant of arrest issued by the ICC, a move that has since been criticized as unlawful by the senator. The sister of President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. has said there were glaring violations in Duterte's arrest. Duterte is currently detained in the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague for charges of crimes against humanity for the extrajudicial killings during the drug war. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Bogus Duterte report used to drive traffic to e-commerce site

A fabricated news graphic claiming the International Criminal Court (ICC) in July issued a lengthy jail sentence to former Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte has circulated on Facebook. The 80-year-old Duterte is still awaiting a confirmation of charges hearing for alleged crimes against humanity; the false posts meanwhile direct users to a product sold on a popular e-commerce platform. "The ICC meted a 'reclusion perpetua' sentence on ex-Pres Duterte because of [extrajudicial killings]," reads the bogus graphic shared July 8, 2025 on Facebook. The post, which has been taken down, bears the logo of broadcaster ABS-CBN and its flagship news programme TV Patrol, and includes an old photo of Duterte (archived here, here and here). Reclusion perpetua, a term used in Philippine law, refers to imprisonment for a minimum of 20 years and one day to a maximum of 40 years (archived link). Duterte remains in detention at the ICC awaiting a court hearing scheduled in September to confirm his charges. He stands accused of crimes against humanity over his government's brutal "war on drugs" that rights groups say killed thousands (archived link). The former president is currently seeking an interim release to an unnamed country (archived link). The supposed news graphic, also shared on multiple Facebook groups, carried an identical caption and link that purports to show the complete news report. Comments show people appeared to believe it was a genuine image from ABS-CBN. "ABS-CBN is taking revenge because [Duterte] shut you down," one wrote, referring to when the former leader's government forced the broadcaster off air in 2020 (archived link). "ABS-CBN, I don't believe your news reports!" another said. Jonathan de Santos, deputy editor at ABS-CBN News, told AFP on July 11 the organisation did not release the circulating graphic. He also shared an article on ABS-CBN's website that debunked a similar post in June (archived link). A review of the link shared in the false posts found it is a masked URL that leads to a product sold over e-commerce platform Lazada (archived link). A spokesperson for Lazada said the company reviewed the post and found it "contains misleading content with affiliate links that direct users to Lazada". The company has an affiliate program where content creators can apply to earn commission through promoting a brand or product available at the online store (archived link). "We are taking appropriate action with this page/account given this activity directly violates the LazAffiliates Terms and Conditions," the spokesperson told AFP on July 15. AFP has repeatedly debunked misinformation around Duterte's arrest and detention here.
