It was similar scene Friday evening as people filed into St. Raphael Catholic Church in Bay Village for Dylan's viewing. Dan Schlegel, the pastor at St. Raphael's. Dylan's life was cut short at just 16 years old. He's remembered as a straight 'A' sophomore with a big smile and a bright future. His family said he was a beacon of 'joy, laughter and determination.' Following his tragic death, the Bay Village School District decided to cancel the games for the remainder of the lacrosse season, and the community has rallied around those affected by the incident, especially Dylan's family. There was the 'Sticks Out for Dylan' campaign and the Meal Train fundraiser for the Veselics, which quickly surpassed $123,000. BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (WJW) – A grieving community came together to pay their respects and remember Dylan Veselic who passed away after a tragic lacrosse accident. Thousands of mourners began arriving early at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Bay Village on Friday night ahead of calling hours which started at 4:30 p.m. 'It's a sign of how much Dylan's life impacted so many people, not only throughout Greater Cleveland, but we've gotten messages from all around the country about this,' said Fr. Dan Schlegel, the pastor at St. Raphael's. Many of his friends, teammates and classmates wore Bay blue to the church and have been struggling to make sense of the tragic accident. 'They ask a lot of questions as to why would God allow something like this to happen?' said Schlegel. 'We don't know those answers. The only thing that we can say is how will they honor Dylan in their own lives and how will they remember the legacy of the kid who was so filled with life and love for other people?' His family said that much of the focus has been on Dylan's athletic ability, but he was much more than that. He was a beacon of 'joy, laughter and determination.' It's hard for them even to fathom the immensity of peoples love for them,' said Schlegel. Not only is the family comforted by the support, but Schlegel said they are also leaning on their faith. 'I've grieved with this family before,' he said. 'I know faith got them through and I know that faith will help them to get through this as well.' A funeral mass will take place on May 24 at 10:30 a.m., also at St. Raphael's. Dylan's burial will follow the funeral at Sunset Memorial Park. A Cleveland-area high school lacrosse player died from an accidental blunt-force injury he got during a game this month, according to the medical examiner's office that performed his autopsy. Dylan Veselic, 16, was playing in a lacrosse game in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, on May 6, when he was injured, the Bay Village School District previously told USA TODAY. The teen was trying to block another player's shot when the ball hit him at the base of the back of his head, below his helmet, reported WKYC-TV. Dylan's death stemmed from a blunt-force injury to his craniocervical area, where the skull connects to the first few vertebrae of the neck, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office said on May 13. Olmsted Township police and fire officials responded to the scene before Dylan was rushed to the hospital. Doctors performed surgery on the teenager, reported television station WEWS-TV. Dylan died two days after the injury, the school district confirmed. The Bay Village Boys Lacrosse team announced that it was ending its season early on Tuesday, May 13. 'Following a period of thoughtful reflection this past weekend, the Bay High School Boys Lacrosse Team has made the decision to conclude its season,' the team wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Principal Jason Martin said in a statement that he was kind and well-known. "Dylan was a well-liked and respected young man who touched the lives of many with his kindness, character, and spirit,' Martin wrote in the statement. 'We extend our deepest condolences to his family during this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we hope they find comfort in the love and support of our community.' On May 8, classmates created a tribute for the teenager at his locker, the district shared online. Lacrosse clubs in Australia also held moments of silence for him. Matt Spellman, the athletics and activities director of the Bay Village School District, said in a statement that "Dylan was an amazing student, always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates." "He was kind, hardworking, and dedicated, consistently showing leadership, empathy, and a positive attitude both on the field and in the classroom," Spellman said. Dylan's family thanks community for support While the teen was hospitalized, locals started a meal train to support his family. The meal train started with a $500 goal and by May 13, nearly $118,000 had been raised. CBS affiliate WOIO reported that the 16-year-old sophomore was taken to a local hospital before he was flown to another hospital for emergency surgery. A statement posted to the Bay Village boys lacrosse team's X account from the Veselic family said they are "deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond." The family's message asked for prayers. Bay High School Athletics said on social media that Veselic was "an amazing student athlete, always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates." "Dylan's enthusiasm, determination, and willingness to help others made him a role model for his peers," the statement added. The school district shared a picture of a memorial at Veselic's locker. Sticky notes with messages blanketed his locker, and bouquets of flowers were placed on the ground. There was also a prayer service at Saint Raphael Catholic Church in Bay Village on Thursday. A high school lacrosse player from Ohio died this week at the age of 16 after a freak accident during a game. Dylan Veselic, a sophomore at Bay Village High School, died Thursday after taking a ball to the head two days prior. Veselic was injured after a shot from an opponent struck the back of his head underneath his helmet. He underwent surgery on Wednesday, but it was not enough. "We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the family said in a statement. "Dylan was a dedicated student and athlete, and we are heartbroken by this loss," Bay Village Schools Superintendent Scot Prebles said in a statement, via "Counseling services are available at Bay High School for students, staff and family who need support." A fundraiser in honor of Veselic has raised over $80,000; its goal was just $500. Those in the community have left both lacrosse and hockey sticks and soccer balls on their porches and lawns in support. "Dylan was an amazing student, always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates," added Bay Village athletic director Matt Spellman said. "He was kind, hardworking and dedicated, consistently showing leadership, empathy and a positive attitude both on the field and in the classroom." Veselic was listed as a captain of the team on MaxPreps. This was his second season on varsity, playing for the varsity team as a freshman, as well. He played in 25 high school games. The team canceled a game on Thursday, the day he died, for a prayer service. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday.
