This Mercedes-Benz Division You've Never Heard of Just Pulled 737 HP Out of a 29-LB EV Motor
Last month, Mercedes-AMG touted the potential of YASA's axial-flux electric motors with its AMG GT XX Concept car, but it seems that EV's powerplant was just the tip of the iceberg. YASA has just claimed an unofficial world record for the highest-power density electric motor 'in its class.' Tim Woolmer, CTO at YASA, made the claim on LinkedIn, saying a new prototype motor it developed produces 550 kilowatts and weighs only 13.1 kilograms. That gives it an astounding power density of 42 kW/kg. The previous unofficial record? Helix, an electric drive system company, made a motor with a 23 kW/kg density. To put that in freedom units, YASA's prototype motor produces just over 737 horsepower and weighs only 28.9 pounds. That's more power than a standard Hellcat engine, in a piece of equipment you can pick up and hold in your hands. How did YASA do it? Details are thin, but Woolmer noted it didn't use any exotic materials, believes the design is mass-producible at 10,000–50,000 units per year and touts 'insane cooling performance.' Continuous power is 'close' to the peak output using only standard cooling fluids, and Woolmer said the peak itself is good for about five seconds. YASA's axial-flux motors are naturally more power dense than the radial flux motors used in EVs today thanks to the inherent design. (If you want to know the long, technical details, check out a deep dive on electric motor design here.) Woolmer says YASA wasn't trying to achieve a world record with its electric motor, saying it 'accidentally' achieved the highest power density. The potential that such a motor has for production vehicles is great. A single electric motor with that much power taking up such little space at a relatively inconsequential weight would be a huge help for packaging, especially for sports cars. Road & Track reached out to YASA to see what other details it would provide about this prototype electric motor, and we'll update this post if we hear back. Theoretically, Mercedes-AMG products would be first up to take advantage of this motor tech, and the upcoming production version of the AMG GT XX is already set to use YASA's axial-flux electric motor tech. Should You Buy the Win Streak in Red-Hot QuantumScape Stock?
QuantumScape (QS) shares extended gains further on Thursday to print a new 52-week high of $13.79 as investors continued to pile into the NYSE-listed firm ahead of its earnings next week. Advanced battery stocks have been in focus this year amid growing optimism around next-gen EV technology and commercial scalability. Including today's gain, QuantumScape is up 300% versus its year-to-date low set in early April. Why Has QuantumScape Stock Soared in Recent Weeks? QuantumScape has recently disclosed plans of reporting its second-quarter financial results on July 23. Consensus is for it to lose $0.20 on a per-share basis in Q2. While the earnings expectations suggest QuantumScape remains far from achieving profitability, hitting or beating the number would still be a win for investors as it translates to meaningful improvement from the $0.25 a share the company lost in the same quarter last year. QuantumScape stock has experienced a meteoric rally in recent weeks partly because it successfully integrated its Cobra separator process into baseline cell production. This improves manufacturing efficiency by a factor of 25 and positions the solid-state rechargeable lithium metal batteries maker closer to commercial-scale deployment. Fundamentals Fail to Justify QS Shares Valuation QuantumScape is broadly expected to narrow its per-share loss by about 20% in its fiscal Q2. Still, the battery stock remains unattractive to own due to valuation concerns. For a pre-revenue company in its development stage only, a price-book (P/B) ratio of nearly 5.5x looks overly stretched and signals potential for a sharp drawdown in the second half of 2025. In late June, William Blair analysts also told clients that QS shares have gotten ahead of themselves as they reiterated their 'Market Perform' rating on the firm. Wall Street's Mean Target Signals Downside in QuantumScape Investors should note that other Wall Street analysts also agree that QS stock is rather overvalued at current levels. According to Barchart, the consensus rating on QuantumScape shares sits at 'Hold' only with the mean target of about $4.79 indicating potential downside of 65% from here. The electric Range Rover is almost here! But we've already taken it off road...
The Range Rover Electric's 542bhp of peak power isn't likely to cause too many heightened expectations in this department. We have so far only driven the car below 20mph, on a mix of single-track sealed roads and forest tracks; so impressions about on-road performance and drivability will come later. And as far as offroading goes; Eastnor's tracks were mostly dry on the day of our test, so didn't present the challenge to this car's outright traction and torque-vectoring capacities that they might have on a soggy December afternoon. But a cakewalk, they certainly ain't. In places they climb and descend slippery gradients of more than 25 degrees, as well as twisting and turning around gulleys, and over rocks and ridges. And yet the unflappable calmness with which the Range Rover Electric can simply ease itself up, down, over and around everything before it inspires incredible confidence in its capabilities. Nothing seems to phase it. Nothing requires the merest run up, or suck-it-and-see hurried stab of power. It sniffs out traction bit by bit, like a mountain goatherd who's rehearsed every step; and without any need to worry about keeping engine revs from bogging down, momentum from dying, or wheels from spinning away fruitlessly. Without an asymmetrical motor layout, the car vectors torque in offroad situations via open diffs and brake interventions, using specially developed Terrain Response traction control software adapted for the torque of electric motors. 'We can control a slipping wheel about a hundred times faster than in the standard car,' says Fairbrother. The difference that makes to the Range Rover's offroad capability is remarkable; and, in tandem with an apparent dearth of effort expended in what it's doing caused by the lack of any revving engine, it makes for an air of assurance that suits a Range Rover quite brilliantly. As well as being superbly quiet and calm when running on asphalt, there's a serene composure about this car even at the toughest of moments. So accessible is the car's torque, and so fine and effective its electronic governance, that you seldom need more than 40- or 50 per cent throttle to ease gently over the biggest roots, or out of deep ruts. The loudest noises you'll hear will likely be water sloshing past the wheels, gravel crunching under the tyres, and the background hum of the air conditioning.
