Machado's homer highlights Padres' 7-1 win over Mets, who lose Soto to bruised foot

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado hit a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning and the San Diego Padres won 7-1 on Tuesday night against the NL East-leading New York Mets, who watched slugger Juan Soto leave the game after fouling a ball off his left foot in the fourth. The Mets announced that Soto has a bruised foot. He was in considerable pain as he was checked by a trainer. He took a few swings and finished his at-bat, grounding out as second baseman Jake Cronenworth made a diving stop. New York got just four hits in losing its second straight to the Padres following a seven-game winning streak. Machado greeted reliever Chris Devenski by hitting his 20th homer of the season off the facade of the second deck in left field with two outs in the seventh. Elías Díaz hit a two-run double with one out in the seventh, off José Buttó (3-2). Jackson Merrill broke a 1-all tie in the sixth when he hit a chopper off Buttó that bounced over the head of first baseman Pete Alonso and rolled into the right-field corner for an RBI triple. Luis Arraez, aboard on a single, scored easily. Merrill also had a run-scoring single off starter Sean Manaea in the first. New York tied it in the fifth on pinch-hitter Starling Marte's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Manaea, who pitched for the Padres in 2022, allowed one run and three hits in five innings, with four strikeouts and no walks. Padres rookie Ryan Bergert loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth and made way for Jeremiah Estrada. He struck out Francisco Lindor and then allowed Marte's sac fly before retiring slugger Pete Alonso. Wandy Peralta (5-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. Key moment Machado's homer put a charge into the sellout crowd of 45,088. Key stat Machado joined five other active big leaguers who have at least 10 seasons of 20 homers. Up next Mets RHP Clay Holmes (9-5, 3.40 ERA) and Padres RHP Yu Darvish (0-3, 9.18) are scheduled to start Wednesday's series finale. ___ AP MLB:

Seranthony Domínguez traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Toronto Blue Jays in between their doubleheader

BALTIMORE — Baltimore swept a doubleheader against Toronto, but for Seranthony Domínguez it was a split. The Orioles traded the reliever to the Blue Jays between games. 'After the first game, I was in there with the guys, and they call me and they tell me, 'Hey we got you traded. Go to the next dugout,'' Domínguez said. Domínguez did not pitch in the opener, which the Orioles won 16-4. Then the trade — Domínguez for minor league right-hander Juaron Watts-Brown — was announced about an hour before the scheduled first pitch of the nightcap. Domínguez threw a scoreless seventh inning for Toronto, but Baltimore ultimately prevailed 3-2. 'He's been around, for one. He's got really, really good stuff,' Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. 'He can miss bats, great fastball, great splitter.' Domínguez is 2-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 44 relief appearances this season. The last-place Orioles have also traded away relievers Bryan Baker and Gregory Soto as part of what has been a mild sell-off so far. The AL East-leading Blue Jays have a bullpen ERA of 3.94, which ranks in the middle of the pack. Domínguez, who was in his sixth season with the Philadelphia Phillies when the right-hander was traded to Baltimore around this time last year, can help. The 23-year-old Watts-Brown was ranked as Toronto's No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He's 2-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 19 starts at Class A and Double-A this year. The Double-A affiliates for the Blue Jays and Orioles — New Hampshire and Chesapeake — were also playing each other Tuesday night, making this a convenient move for Watts-Brown, too. The Blue Jays designated veteran right-hander Chad Green for assignment. 'Had to have a terrible conversation with Chad Green, who's been so good not only for us but for his entire major league career,' Schneider said. 'First and foremost, wish him the best. He's the definition of a professional.'

Díaz's walk-off single lifts the Padres to a wild 7-6 win against the Mets

SAN DIEGO -- Elías Díaz singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring in Jose Iglesias with the winning run, and the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 7-6 in a wild game Monday night to end their seven-game winning streak. The Padres chased Díaz into shallow right field in celebration. Iglesias, who played for New York last year, reached on a bunt that new Mets reliever Gregory Soto (0-3) fielded and threw wide of shortstop Francisco Lindor, allowing Xander Bogaerts to take second. Iglesias advanced on Jake Cronenworth's bunt that forced Bogaerts at third and then scored on Díaz's single to left-center. Ronny Mauricio tied the game for the NL East-leading Mets with a one-out homer in the ninth off All-Star closer Robert Suarez (3-4), who was trying for his major league-leading 31st save. Padres starter Dylan Cease was hit in the back of the head by a one-hopper off Lindor's bat with one out in the third, but remained in the game after being checked by trainers. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected one batter later by plate umpire Emil Jimenez after Juan Soto took a called third strike. The Mets took a 5-1 lead in the fifth when Mark Vientos hit his first career grand slam, one inning after right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. made a spectacular leaping catch to rob him of a two-run homer. The Padres rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning, on seven hits and a walk, as well as a break when reliever Huascar Brazobán was late covering first on Cronenworth's two-out shot to first baseman Pete Alonso that went for an RBI single. The highlight was Luis Arraez's two-run homer high off the right-field foul pole followed by an epic bat flip. Tatis robbing Vientos and then making a sliding catch of Mauricio's sinking liner in the sixth. It was the Padres' fifth walk-off win this season. Mets LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 2.19 ERA), who pitched for the Padres in 2022, is scheduled to start Tuesday night. The Padres hadn't announced a starter. ___
