UK's newest £3.9bn garden city with 15k homes changing unused land forever

Huge plans, costing almost £4billion, to totally revamp 2,500 acres of brownfield land into a vibrant green city first started in 2015 - and is set to be completely finished in the next 10 years Ambitious plans to transform unused land into a bustling green city are slated to be fully finished in the next decade. Following soaring demand for more houses in the popular commuter county of Kent, the idea of Ebbsfleet Garden City was born back in 2015. Spearheaded by the Government and Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, and costing almost £4 billion, the investment aims to create the first garden city in 100 years across 2,500 acres of brownfield land. ‌ By 2035, Ebbsfleet will feature a staggering 15,000 new homes and 40 per cent 'green and blue space' with 50 new parks and open spaces - while creating 32,000 jobs for residents. By then, the mostly flattened area will become a place for Brits to 'grow a family, build a business, socialise, and enjoy a unique city-country lifestyle on the edge of London and Kent'. ‌ There are three major projects of the Ebbsfleet Garden City: Ebsfleet Central, Northfleet Embankment, and Community buildings and spaces. According to the developer's website, Ebbsfleet Garden City comprises an urban regeneration area made up of a collection of brownfield development sites within Dartford and Gravesham Boroughs. The planning application for this project is due to be submitted later this year. "Ebbsfleet Central will be the dynamic commercial centre for Ebbsfleet and the surrounds, anchored by Ebbsfleet International railway station," developers explained. "Current car parking around the station will be relocated and the area transformed with modern new offices, city living apartments and places for people to enjoy arts and culture alongside fitness and wellbeing, all on the doorsteps of high-quality and sustainable neighbourhoods." ‌ Ebbsfleet Central, a mixed-use residential and commercial area, will feature around 2,100 homes (35 per cent of which are Affordable Housing) and up to 100,000 square metres of office floorspace - as well as 10,000 square metres of retail floor spaces for restaurants, bars, cafes, and supermarkets. Located just 17 minutes from Central London, it is hoped the revamped area will become a 'magnet for inclusive economic growth' and a 'destination of choice for investment and innovation'. In 2022, Ebbsfleet Development Corporation submitted the outline planning application for the first phase of new development in Ebbsfleet Central. This includes building new leisure facilities, a new school, and more open spaces for future residents. ‌ The mega project also involves building the Eastgate Community Building, a church and local community centre located in the middle of Springhead Park. "The building and various rooms is available to the public to host various groups, classes, events and initiatives," developers added. "As well as annual events such as Easter Egg hunts, Summer BBQs and Christmas Fairs, Eastgate is also a regular meeting space for Rainbows & Brownies, Zapa Performing Arts and runs a regular Parents & Tots group, as well as being used as a church space." Last year, Ebbsfleet Garden City announced 632 new homes were delivered in 2022/23 despite national challenges to the housing market. Since 2015, around 3,516 news have already been delivered in the region - including 195 Affordable Homes. As of 2024, 3.94 hectares of parks, open spaces and recreation areas, as well as 3.62km of dedicated footpaths and cycle ways - and £172.9 million in private sector investment had been delivered.

Much-loved traditional Louth sweet shop on the market for €125,000

One of Dundalk's last traditional sweet shops is up for sale. O'Hagan's shop in Bridge Street has gone on the market with a guide price of €125,000. Generations from the town's North End have fond memories of going to the shop to buy bags of loose sweets which were carefully weighed from jars, minerals, milk and cigarettes. The shop was originally run by Ann O'Hagan, whose window display of a large chocolate Easter Egg in a basket, captivated the local children. After her death, it passed to her son John Taylor, who is now residing in a nursing home. Estate agent Joanne Lavelle says that the it's a 'rare opportunity' along one of Dundalk's main streets, as the shop is located at the junction with Bridge St and Castletown Road and 'so commands a fantastic spot, within the recently upgraded St Nicholas Quarter.' 62 Bridge St is a mixed use property comprising the shop, living room, kitchen and utility at ground floor with three bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. There's also a small yard at the back. Ms Levelle says it presents a great opportunity to convert to an entire residential subject to planning permission or to create a new business interest alongside living accommodation. 'Number 62 is guaranteed to gain a lot of interest.'

More than 100 Easter Eggs donated by anglers at the Liverpool & District Angling Association Good Friday Open

It was a superb effort by anglers attending the Liverpool & District Angling Association Good Friday Open. Held on the canal over the Easter break, competitors booked on with a hand delivered Easter Egg. Match secretary Mike Dickson does an incredible job raising funds for many charities that the L&DAA supports throughout the year. He put this together again with the aim to assist teams within Sefton Council family centres reaching out to support families and more than 100 eggs were delivered to two centres, which were very gratefully received. On the match itself, and with the canal starting to show some promise now that the warmer weather is beginning to show some form, this one had nearly 50 anglers turning out – stretching from the drum's at Lydiate, back to Westway Bridge at the end of the duck length. Taking the top honours on the day and making his way all the way from Oswestry was a familiar name as a winner over here in Merseyside, Gordon Griffiths. Pegged on the popular Running Horses Length near the famous pub itself, Griffiths made no mistake from this fancied area as he put together a class performance, taking 11.4.0 of skimmers and roach. Skelmersdale's John Carroll, who was pegged on the drum's length on an area that was slightly more open to the gusts of wind, was rewarded with the second best catch on this one as he took a mixed bag which included a couple of bonus skimmers for 6.12.13. In an incredibly tight finish, it was one that saw just drams in it on splitting the frame. Staying with the canal scene, the L&DAA will be holding a memorial match for past chairman Fred Moss on Saturday, May 3 2025. Draw time is 9am at the MCA at Green Lane Maghull and all are welcome. Once again, Mike Dickson will be holding his 'Dicko's raffle' that everyone involved enjoys so much as part of the day's celebrations. On the club front, catching up with one of Merseyside's most popular outfits, the Alliance & Leicester stayed at their home venue at Chapel Pool on Sunday to enjoy another great match on this superb venue. Winner on the day was club stalwart Richard Bamber. Bamber stuck to a tip approach with pellet to take carp for the top club points on the day for 63.1.0. Gary Green took second place with 54.11.0 and Dave Langton a close third with 53.13.0. Also on Sunday, St Helens AA held their annual two-day memorial for a past member Joe Lee, with the second leg on Monday. With another great turn out, this one was about the competitors using their aggregate weights over the two days. Making the most of it was St Helens local Peter Tickle. Tickle took the top weight of the day on Sunday with 13.8.0 and Monday following that on taking a section win with 7.10.0. Overall Tickle's 21.2.0 was enough to take the top honours and the coveted trophy. Winning the match with a superb 16lb on Monday, St Helens rod Phil Holland put that on top of his previous day's catch of just 3.6.0 to put together a second overall 19.6.0. Scots pensioner fears she's being 'watched' after Christmas tree dumped in her garden

Judy Lothian has been left feeling uneasy in her own home and believes the culprit may have been watching her. A Scots pensioner has been left "paranoid" someone is watching her home after a fly tipper dumped a Christmas tree in her front garden. Judy Lothian, from Clermiston, Edinburgh, revealed the incident has left her feeling uneasy in her own home as she believes the culprit may have been watching her, reports Edinburgh Live. ‌ The council tenant, who lives with mobility issues, recently lost her partner and lives at home with her two dogs, and is reliant on her sister for help around the house and garden. ‌ On the morning of Monday, May 19, her sister had spent hours tidying up the front lawn with the pair having gone out to drop off garden waste. After dropping off the rubbish, the siblings decided to go shopping but on their return the dead Christmas tree could be seen poking out of her flowers and hedge. Judy is adamant the tree must have been dumped between the hours of 10am and 1pm in the afternoon. She believes someone may have observed her having garden work done and when she left her home, they seized their opportunity to dump the tree in the hope she would get rid of it. 'It has set off the paranoia,' Judy said. 'I'm now worried someone is watching the house, it is really worrying. 'I recently lost my partner and all I have left are my two dogs. It is depressing someone has done this. 'It's really p****d me off. My sister has spent hours getting the garden nice and for someone to dump the tree between my rhododendron and hedge. ‌ 'It definitely was not there this morning. We went out at 10am and came back at 1pm and we could see it sticking out. 'See if the person had just tapped my door to ask if I could get rid of it for them then that would be different. I cannot afford the garden uplift myself hence why my sister has had to take the garden waste away.' Judy has contacted Edinburgh Council to try to arrange an uplift. Edinburgh Council have been approached for comment. ‌ Last month, in an unrelated incident, we reported that a "bizarre" burglar was caught on camera breaking into a car - and stealing an Easter Egg. ‌ A shocked Edinburgh homeowner spotted the chocolate thief entering the driveway of their Corstorphine house on Wednesday, April 23. The video clip shows the man opening the door of a Mini parked in the drive. Over the next 30 seconds, the unknown man can be seen stealing and unwrapping a Mini Egg easter egg. He then appears to stuff the chocolate egg into his pocket before throwing the discarded rubbish back into the vehicle. ‌ The baffled homeowner, who was left puzzled by the footage, said a £400 paddle board lay across the backseat of the car next to the egg, yet the burglar decided to leave it in favour of the chocolate treat. "It was really bizarre," they said. "He broke into my car and took a chocolate Easter egg and unwrapped it all. "He then pocketed the chocolate and put all the rubbish back into my car. There was a £400 paddleboard on the back seat that he ignored. "It felt equally violating and bizarre. It is confusing behaviour." Police Scotland were approached for comment.

Gang of creepy prowlers caught targeting home on chilling CCTV

A gang of creepy hooded Scots prowlers have been captured targeting a home during the night on chilling CCTV. Footage from Tuesday May 13 shows a group of three men skulking around a home on Savannah Drive in Tranent during the early hours, before seemingly trying to break into a garage, reports Edinburgh Live. Cameras at the rear of the property caught one person crouched down behind a car in front of the garage, with another standing at the main door to the outbuilding. The owner of the home woke to find the garage door handle broken and the bottom corner of a window smashed. Just minute before, another chilling clip captures the moment the gang walk down the residential street, wearing dark clothing and appearing to point towards a garden fence. Posting several clips on Facebook, the homeowner said: "Some little angels tried to break into our garage last night in the new Walker Homes. Not sure why anyone needs a lawnmower that bad, they could have just had it. "Just wondering if anyone else was targeted. This was just after 2am." The resident confirmed the gang only targeted the garage and the incident has since been reported to the police, who say enquiries are ongoing. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.50am on Wednesday, 14 May, 2025 we were called to a report of an attempted break-in to a garage in Savannah Drive, Tranent. Enquiries are ongoing.'
