Before ‘Bangladeshis' from Gujarat, 80 from Delhi ‘pushed back'
Days before the Border Security Force (BSF) pushed back 'illegal' Bangladeshi immigrants after they were arrested in Gujarat, a similar fate befell a group of 80 such immigrants arrested from the national capital. In a letter to the BSF's Eastern Command, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Delhi intimated that the group of 80 would be brought to Kolkata on April 23. The letter sought the cooperation of Kolkata Police in receiving the arrested individuals arriving by train and taking them to the border to be handed over to the BSF. Speaking to The Hindu, an official aware of the matter said the detainees were 'pushed back' through land to Bangladesh on the night of April 23. 'Bangladeshis who are trying to enter India illegally are now being pushed back instead of being arrested,' said the official. New Method The official said a high number of requests for deportation has been coming from Delhi in the past six months in the wake of a crackdown on such illegal immigrants. 'The new method is being used to cut down on the state's resources since arrest, appearance before court and imprisonment for months takes up time and resources without any concrete results,' said the official. The official added that the exercise to push back illegal immigrants into Bangladesh at the border has been happening at least four times a month in the recent past.
