Motorcyclist thrown from vehicle in crash outside Caledonia

A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a three-vehicle crash near Caledonia. In a social media post at 7:31 p.m. Friday, Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Ed Sanchuk said Highway 54 was closed between Mines Road and McKinnon Drive. 'Initial investigation has determined that a motorist turned into the path of a motorcyclist, causing a crash, and ultimately ejecting that motorcyclist into the path of an oncoming vehicle.' Sanchuk said the motorcyclist's injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. He reminded drivers that it was Friday the 13th, a day when many motorcyclists head to Port Dover and pack the streets for a celebration. 'Before you make any turns, make sure that you check twice. It's going to save a life and prevent a crash,' he said.

OPP respond to multiple motorcycle crashes amid Friday the 13th rally

Multiple crashes involving motorcyclists Friday spurred Ontario Provincial Police to appeal for drivers to be more cautious. The collisions — which left at least two seriously injured — came as thousands of bikers descended on Port Dover for the famous Friday the 13th rally, which brings motorcyclists across Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern U.S. to the lakeside town annually. More than 100,000 attended last year. 'Please make sure that your head's on a swivel,' Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a video posted to social media around 5:30 p.m., just after a crash at St. John's Road and Highway 6 left a biker with minor injuries. 'You're paying attention to your surroundings, putting all the distractions away and just focusing on driving your motorcycle or motor vehicle.' Sanchuk said this was the sixth motorcycle-involved crash West Region OPP responded to Friday. Earlier in the day, around 1:30 p.m., Sanchuk taped a clip from Highway 6 and Concession Road 2, where a collision between two motorcycles sent one biker to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The other biker — who Sanchuk said was also injured — fled the scene in a black Harley Davidson with damage to its right side. Police are encouraging him to turn himself in. Meanwhile, Burlington OPP also had calls stemming from the motorcycle rally, responding to a serious crash near Highway 6 and Haldibrook Road around 4:20 p.m. According to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, a motorcyclist collided with an SUV making a turn in the path of rider. Dave Thompson, Hamilton paramedic commander, said a man in his 40s was taken to hospital in critical condition following the crash. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. The vehicles collided in the intersection of Thorndale and Cobble Hills roads in Thames Centre at about 4:30 p.m., Sanchuk said. The intersection is controlled by stop signs on Cobble Hills Road. Thorndale and Cobble Hills roads intersect east of Cobble Hill in Middlesex County, which is just past Thorndale on London's northeastern outskirts. A photograph taken by a witness at the scene obtained by The Free Press showed several ambulances, fire trucks and police vehicles parked on the road with several first responders near a vehicle in a field. '(It's) one of those things that you just hope you never see,' Sanchuk said in an interview with The Free Press. 'What usually happens is when we take this uniform off when we go home we're parents, we're relatives, and we're family, we're friends, but we're very professional and make sure that we do the right things for the right reasons and do a great job for our community,' Sanchuk said. Asked about the collision, the Thames Centre fire department – with a station located not far from the area – declined comment and directed questions to the OPP. Thorndale and Cobble Hills roads will remain closed for several hours while the investigation continues, Sanchuk said. Investigators are asking drivers in the area at the time of the crash to check their dash camera footage to see if they captured the crash or the vehicles involved.
