Watch: Why are TN parties opposing RBI's Draft Gold Loan norms?
Over the past week, leaders across party lines in Tamil Nadu have strongly criticised the Reserve Bank of India's Draft (Lending against Gold Collateral) Directions, 2025. From Chief Minister M K Stalin to Opposition Leader Edappadi K Palaniswami, everyone, except those from the BJP, is arguing that these new guidelines will put the poor, middle class, and farmers in a tight spot. So, what's driving this debate, and why is it such a hot-button issue? Gold loans are a lifeline for many families in Tamil Nadu and beyond. They aren't a luxury; they're a safety net. For generations, people have relied on gold—often passed down through the family—as a form of financial security in times of need. But in April, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released draft guidelines on gold loans, which could make it harder for people to access this crucial credit. In this episode, let's break down some of the key changes that have stirred this controversy. Script & Presentation: D. Suresh Kumar Videography: Thamodharan B Production: Shibu Narayan

N Chennai residents form human chain to protest WTE project
Chennai: Residents of North Chennai, joined by local councillors, formed a human chain at Kodungaiyur on Sunday, urging the govt to scrap the proposed Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project at Kodungaiyur dumping ground. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They demanded that the reclaimed 352acres of landfill be converted into a park, playground, or college to benefit the community. Support for the campaign grew stronger with political parties such as AIADMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) backing the protest. AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami said residents were already struggling with health issues such as respiratory and skin problems and announced a protest at Kodungaiyur on June 2. NTK leader Seeman called the project an "environmental disaster" aimed at working-class neighbourhoods, warning it would release toxic gases and worsen pollution levels. Hundreds participated in Sunday's protest, raising concerns over the project's impact on public health and the environment in North Chennai. The human chain stretched nearly four kilometres — from Ezhil Nagar at Kodungaiyur to Ambedkar College at Vyasarpadi. "Despite repeated objections, steps are being taken to install the incinerator. We visited the WTE plant in Hyderabad and saw firsthand how residents there are suffering from health problems. We fear a similar outcome here," said T K Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Associations. Congress councillor J Dilli Babu (ward 37) said residents near the dumpyard have suffered for more than four decades. "The civic body claims the plant will be built with safety measures, but there's no assurance of complete safety for residents. We urge GCC to shift the WTE plant to the outskirts," he added.

Stalin says he will attend NITI Aayog's meet on May 24, advocates TN's fair financial right
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 21 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday said that he will attend NITI Aayog's Governing Council meeting on May 24 and will demand 'fair financial rights' for his State. The Chief Minister also asked why All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami was pained by this, adding that he will keep on fighting to get a fair financial share from the Centre to his State. 'I am going to Delhi on the 24th to express to the NITI Aayog for fair financial rights for Tamil Nadu at the meeting!' Stalin said in a post on X in Tamil. 'Why does this pain the Leader of the Opposition, Palaniswami, who has kept his habit of keeping his feet under the table?' he added. Saying that he will always carry the flag of freedom, the Chief Minister said,'I will always carry the flag of freedom! I will not crawl away! Even today, I have filed a case in the Supreme Court for the rights of Tamil Nadu. I will stand firm on my policy! I will fight to get funds for Tamil Nadu.' Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government filed a plea in the Supreme Court over the alleged non-disbursal of around 2200 crores by the Central government to the State, over the latter's decision not to implement the National Education Policy (NEP). In its plea, the Tamil Nadu government has sought the Court to declare that the National Education Policy, 2020, and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme are not binding on the State unless a formal agreement is entered into with the Union Government. The State government has further argued that its entitlement to funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme has been unlawfully made conditional on the implementation of these central schemes, which it considers to be unconstitutional, arbitrary, and illegal. 'The glaring reason for such non-disbursement is that the Defendant has linked the release of Samagra Shiksha Scheme funds with the implementation of 'National Education Policy' and 'NEP exemplary PM SHRI Schools' Scheme, despite the fact that this policy / scheme are separate schemes. That the reason of such apparent linkage is the fact that the MoU pertaining to the PM SHRI Schools Scheme dictates for implementation of the NEP-2020 in the Plaintiff State (Tamil Nadu) in its entirety which is not agreeable to the Plaintiff State due to the vociferous opposition to the Clause 4.13 of the NEP-2020 which envisages three-language formula', the plea reads. The State government is thus demanding the release of Rs2,291.30 crore from the Centre, along with 6% annual interest on the principal sum of Rs2,151.59 crore from 1 May 2025 until full payment is made.
