Eddie Dunbar confirms move to Q36.5 Pro Cycling team from Jayco-AlUla

Ireland's Eddie Dunbar is to join the Q36.5 Pro Cycling team on a two-year contract. The Banteer cyclist departs Jayco-AlUla after three years and is set to join the Swiss team's ranks this winter. Despite finishing seventh overall in the 2023 Giro d'Italia and winning two stages in last year's Vuelta a España , Dunbarr acknowledged he is yet to fully deliver on his talent. 'Grand Tours suit me well because I always get better towards the end. I absorb the workload of a three-week race well,' the 28-year-old said on Monday, confirming the move. READ MORE 'There have been glimpses of what I can do but due to crashes and illness I haven't reached my full potential there yet. That's something for the next two years.' Kurt Bogaerts is head of performance at Q36.5 and has strong experience of working with Irish riders. He previously ran the Sean Kelly racing team and has managed Irish national sides. Bogaerts also worked with Dunbar at Ineos Grenadiers, and believes he can help get the best out of the Cork man. One area they will seek to improve is Dunbar's placement skills in order to avoid the types of crashes which have affected him in the past. While bad luck has been a factor in some of his falls, Bogaerts said Dunbar has acknowledged he must also work on his bike handling. 'If you can have healthy conversation, and we have that already, we know we need to work on that,' said Bogaerts. 'We are both on the same page. I think that's already a big step in the right direction that we both agree that we need to improve this. But we also don't need to make it bigger than it is.' Dunbar will be racing alongside the Olympic mountain bike champion Tom Pidcock, who came on board as team leader earlier this year. Dunbar competed with Pidcock during their respective stints at Ineos, with Bogaerts noting they get on well. The Belgian believes Dunbar will provide important support for Pidcock, but added that his strength means he will also be a leader in his own right. The team may take a dual leader approach in some races, including the Tour de France . But Pidcock's well-acknowledged handling skills may also be an asset as the opportunity to study the Briton's descending technique could serve Dunbar. 'There are a few things we can do to help him achieve his potential,' Bogaerts said. 'We, as a performance team, can definitely support him well, in the coaching and also other areas. There are a lot of topics now around heat and altitude training. I think we have the know how to really ensure he is doing all the efforts to get more out of that.' Dunbar will next line out in the Vuelta a España, which starts on Saturday.

Eddie Dunbar forced to withdraw from debut Tour de France with wrist injury

Eddie Dunbar has been forced to withdraw from his debut Tour de France , with the Cork rider the sole non-starter on Saturday's stage to Laval. Although X-rays taken Friday evening following his stage seven crash did not reveal a fracture, his Jayco AlUla team confirmed on Saturday that he was out of the race. 'Following a crash in the final kilometres of yesterday's stage, Dunbar has been suffering with pain in his wrist and a decision was taken to stop, for his safety,' it said in a media announcement. Dunbar held off on a decision until shortly before Saturday's stage, hoping that a night's rest would help in his recovery. READ MORE However, the risk of further damage plus a likely difficulty in holding the handlebars and pulling brakes made continuing in the race a very difficult ask. He will now undergo additional examinations to ensure the initial tests on Friday were correct. Dunbar was one of approximately a dozen riders who fell heavily inside the final 6km of Friday's stage. Fellow Irishman Ben Healy also came down but had a softer landing and was able to continue in the Tour. The withdrawal is a blow for Dunbar, who has had multiple crashes in races since turning professional. He crashed out of last year's Giro d'Italia but bounced back to win two stages in the Vuelta a España. He was in fine form in his debut Tour, finishing fourth on Thursday's stage six, which was won by Healy, who was part of the same breakaway. Had Dunbar not crashed out he had a good chance of chasing his own stage win. He will now refocus on upcoming events, and should be able to resume training relatively soon if he further results show the he hasn't suffered any fractures. The Vuelta a España, which begins in Turin in Italy on August 23rd, may be a possibility. Dunbar is in the final year of his current contract with Jayco AlUla, but it's believed he has already received at least one offer for next season, taking the pressure off. Still, victory on a stage of the Tour de France would have boosted his salary wherever he ends up.

Eddie Dunbar withdraws from Tour de France with wrist injury

Eddie Dunbar's maiden Tour de France has been cut short due to an injury suffered in a crash that occurred late in Friday's stage. 28-year-old Dunbar got caught up in a large pileup, and although the Banteer cyclist did continue thereafter, he has since been forced to opt out of the race, having not started Saturday's stage eight. Jayco Alula have said that Cork native Dunbar will withdraw from the Tour due to wrist pain. "Following a crash in the final kilometres of yesterday's stage, Dunbar has been suffering with pain in his wrist and a decision was taken to stop, for his safety." Dunbar had taken an impressive fourth-place finish in Thursday's sixth stage, which was won by Ben Healy.

Banteer Eddie Dunbar starts in Tour De France At noon last Sat, one of the most grueling sporting events in the world began, featuring 184 participants. The Tour de France cycling race has been running since 1903, but when this year's event began in Lille a little piece of history for Cork was made. For the first time, the ranks of cyclists will include a Corkman, in the shape of Eddie Dunbar, from Banteer. Eddie will be proudly donning the jersey of Team Jayco AlUla - the only Irish member in an eight-man line-up. Eddies main role is to provide back-up to his team leader, Australian Ben O'Connor, but the experience he gains may set him up for a good tilt at the event in the years to come. This is a great achievement for Cork, in a race where Ireland has had some stand-out moments down the years. ADVERTISEMENT Eddies achievement now inks the name of Cork further into the history of this famous event. This year's event lasts for 22 days and the cyclists will cover a total distance of 3,338km in 21 stages. The longest stage of this year's Tour de France covers more than 209km in one day, which is like cycling from Patrick Street to Gorey - very, very fast, at average speeds of around 40km/h. These super-fit cyclists will push themselves to the brink of exhaustion on the Tour. We wish Eddie the best of luck in the 3 week tour and you can follow each live on TV. Brilliant Ben Healy secures Ireland's first Tour de France stage victory in five years

Healy, competing in only his second Tour, broke free early on with over 40km to go and cruised home to take Stage 6 by over two minutes. Fellow Irishman Eddie Dunbar finished in fourth place, three minutes and 20 seconds behind Healy. Healy becomes the first Irishman to win a stage on the Tour since Sam Bennett in 2020 and joins an illustrious list that also includes Dan Martin, Martin Earley, Stephen Roche, Sean Kelly and Shay Elliott.
