Did 'MobLand' just kill off Tom Hardy? Boss explains

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Season 1 of the Paramount+ drama 'MobLand' ended on Sunday, June 1, wrapping up the hit series starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren. When it premiered on March 30, the crime drama broke records as the streamer's biggest global series launch ever, drawing 2.2 million viewers on premiere day. 12 Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' At the end of the Season 1 finale, mob fixer Harry Da Souza's (Hardy) wife, Jan (Joanne Froggatt), accidentally stabs him in the chest with a knife during an argument. The burning question: is that fatal? 'I mean, if you think about it, 'is Harry dead?'' writer and executive producer Jez Butterworth exclusively told The Post. 'No. We're not gonna – We love Harry. We love Tom.' 12 Emily Barber as Alice, Joanne Froggatt as Jan Da Souza and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ Butterworth, who also co-wrote the 2014 Tom Cruise movie 'Edge of Tomorrow,' added, 'I felt strongly that throughout the whole tale, the ball that he kept dropping was his home life,' referring how Harry and his wife were having friction, due to her unhappiness with his job. 'It felt satisfyingly dramatic that having walked through fire for 10 episodes, what happens at the end is the one thing he's not expecting.' The show follows the Harrigans, a London crime family led by patriarch Conrad (Brosnan). His wife Mave (Mirren) frequently schemes behind his back. She hates his illegitimate daughter, Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon), and fawns over his sociopathic grandson, Eddie (Anson Boon). Over the course of the season, one of their sons, Brendan (Daniel Betts), got brutally killed by an enemy, while their other son, Kevin (Paddy Considine), came into his own. 12 Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza and Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Getty Images for Paramount Plus Harry is their fixer who cleans up their messes, at the expense of his home life. Since Harry and Jan have been married for over a decade, one might think she'd be used to his line of work. 'I think in all relationships, the things that we like at first gradually drive you crazy…[Harry] is too freewheelling,' Butterworth, a Tony-winning playwright who also co-wrote the 2015 James Bond film 'Spectre,' explained. 'I think what you're seeing here [between Harry and Jan] is just the attritional cost of dealing with this level of unpredictability, anxiety and stress.' 12 Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza, Mandeep Dhillon as Seraphina Harrigan and Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ 12 Helen Mirren as Maeve Harrigan and Anson Boon as Eddie Harriganin 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ Paramount has not announced a Season 2 yet. But if Season 2 happens, Butterworth hopes that the 'chaotic' dynamic of the family will continue. 'They resemble most families, which is to say, they're chaos. I can't be working out in my family who's the craziest! That's going to continue.' 12 Paddy Considine as Kevin Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Jason Bell/Paramount+ 12 Helen Mirren as Maeve Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ He added that if the show continues, it will also keep its focus on the 'beating heart,' of the story, which is the 'Jeeves and Wooster relationship that Harry has with this family,' he said, referring to the '90s British sitcom about a wealthy man and his valet who gets him out of mishaps. Conrad hasn't exactly run a tight ship. His family is full of double crossing, impulsive actions, and scheming. 'I liked the idea of coming in at a point where perhaps their great days are behind them, and for that to be the test that Conrad is presented with, and that he has to meet the challenge of,' said Butterworth, who also wrote the screenplay for the Matt Damon and Christian Bale sports drama 'Ford v Ferrari.' 12 Paddy Considine as Kevin Harrigan and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ 'We've been watching somebody who is perhaps questioning if they are at the end of their reign. Are they going to be able to rise to that and overcome that? I think that's a fascinating narrative.' The Season 1 finale also killed off the Harrigan's adversary, Ritchie (Geoff Bell). At times, he was sympathetic. 'I loved the fact — and a lot of it's down to the actor — that he has a melancholy quality that really makes you feel sorry for somebody who is a monster,' said Butterworth. 12 Geoff Bell as Richie Stevenson in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ '[Ritchie] was not a monster. He had a monster in him. Whereas, I think Conrad is a monster with a human being [in him] that's trying to be heard. It's a slightly different balance.' 'It was a sad day when I felt that Richie's time had run out,' he continued. 'But I also wanted to squeeze all of the juice out of that particular storyline, and leave us in a position where we could vault from it and move on.' As for the future of 'MobLand' if renewed, he told The Post: 'I'd like this to run for as long as it fascinates and delights and stimulates an audience. If it's doing that, then long may it continue.'

GenAI In The Supply Chain: Predicting Disruption As A Competitive Edge

Sadagopan S, Executive Vice President, Global Head of SaaS & Commercial Applications, Digital Business Services at HCLTech. getty What makes extraterrestrials invincible in the movie Edge of Tomorrow or so superior in Arrival? It is because they could foresee the future. Today, we may not have the technology to know the future, but we have the tools and means to guess it with a high degree of precision. Artificial intelligence (AI)—particularly, generative AI (GenAI)—is the key. It gives us the ability to analyze both structured and unstructured data in real time and predict probable future scenarios. And, needless to say, one practice that needs it the most is supply chain management. We know how supply chains are and have always been. Any disturbance in the fabric of space-time seems to have a direct impact on the supply chain. No wonder supply chain managers have been active in the adoption of technologies that can help them foresee risks. The same is the case with GenAI. A study found that 72% of supply chain executives have deployed GenAI, with most of them already registering modest productivity and revenue gains. GenAI harnesses the latent potential of traditional AI. Let's look at how it does so and whether its applicability in supply chain management is hyped or real. GenAI is particularly helpful in predicting potential supply chain disruptions. Traditionally, organizations have relied on historical sales data, market trends and subjective human intuition to forecast risk scenarios in supply chains. However, compared to traditional methods, GenAI is more effective in accounting for complex factors—economic fluctuations, shifts in consumer behavior, geopolitical tensions, weather conditions, social media trends, etc.—in real time. As a result, it is more accurate in its predictions. This predictive capability of GenAI enables us to anticipate challenges with higher precision, chart models of risk scenarios more comprehensively and develop contingency plans that reduce the impact of disruptions. We can make proactive adjustments to our procurement and inventory management strategies to mitigate expected disruptions. Supply chains typically involve far too many touchpoints and interdependencies to allow confident decision-making. As mentioned above, there are myriad factors—international transportation bottlenecks, natural disasters and supplier insolvency, among others—that need to be considered simultaneously in real time to decide what's best for the business. To be able to revise decisions and adapt to the circumstances, deep visibility and insights into all the factors is imperative. However, traditional methodologies for imbuing agility in decision-making entail considerable human subjectivity, which lowers the probability of achieving the desired outcomes. GenAI can simulate all probable risk scenarios and recommend different courses of action to avoid or mitigate each of them. This data-driven approach to decision-making gives us the necessary foresight for short-term, medium-term and long-term strategies, minimizing the vulnerabilities in the supply chain. The impact of GenAI on supply chains is not a theoretical concept or in the beta phase. There are many organizations across industries that are leveraging the technology to overcome supply chain roadblocks and achieve higher consistency and certainty. For instance, a major logistics company in the U.S. has been leveraging GenAI to optimize in-warehouse pick-up routes. Its GenAI platform accounts for fuel consumption, delivery priorities, weather variations and other factors to recommend the best route. The space and material handling optimization thus achieved has improved the company's productivity and reduced its operational expenditure. Besides, the GenAI solution also analyzes the company's trade network and recommends improvements accordingly. Similarly, a utility company is using GenAI for sewer pipe inspection and prioritization of maintenance tasks. The solution analyzes videos of the insides of the pipes to detect cracks, deformities, root intrusions and debris deposits, as well as structural defects and joint misalignments. The GenAI-enabled software also classifies defects in terms of severity. And whenever operators override the GenAI's classification, the solution learns from the interaction and updates its priority index to generate more accurate results. Also, a globally renowned pizza brand has incorporated GenAI into its analytics tool for more accurate demand forecasts. As a result, the company has improved its product availability and delivery timeliness, thereby enhancing customer experience. Deploying GenAI to achieve superior supply chain resilience is no mean feat. Irrespective of the industry, there are certain imperatives that you must fulfill to leverage the technology to its potential. The use of GenAI is poised to expand throughout the supply chain landscape amid an increasingly complex and tumultuous global business environment. Considering how actively supply chain managers are adopting the technology and improving use cases, they will achieve hyper-efficiency, resiliency and sustainability in the ecosystem soon. Similarly, those who are trailing in the GenAI adoption race or have not considered it yet may soon find themselves lagging too far behind to catch up. In the years following the alien attack on a spaceship, sole survivor Lt. Ripley (Weaver) has been floating through space for the past 57 years when she's rescued by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Tom Cruise ‘had to be carried off the plane' after an exhausting ‘Mission: Impossible' stunt

Even for one of Hollywood's biggest stars, some stunts can push the limits. Tom Cruise was so physically fatigued from acting in a daring sequence for Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning that crew members had to carry him off the plane. In the blockbuster franchise's eighth and seemingly final instalment, Tom Cruise filmed a scene walking on the wing of a small biplane mid-air. 'It beat the hell out of him. The wind hitting him, and the blast of the propeller, particles hitting him. It was the hardest workout you could ever do, it was very dangerous and very exhausting for him. Many times, we were carrying him off the wing because he was so tired. And he was flying all day,' said Wade Eastwood, the film's longtime stunt coordinator and second-unit director to The Times of London newspaper. Eastwood and Cruise have worked together since 2013, after meeting during the filming of Edge of Tomorrow. He was a stunt coordinator on the last four Mission: Impossible films and reminisced about his most-liked moment, which came in the seventh film, Dead Reckoning Part One, where Cruise rode off a cliff-edge on a motorbike. On the actor's risk tolerance and performing his own stunts, Eastwood said, "Tom doesn't show fear, Tom shows competence. He had fun during all his stunts, even when it was exhausting. He's always positive, he'll always put on a smile, and he genuinely enjoys it.' The actor spent over a year training in motocross and skydiving to prepare for the stunt, completing more than 500 skydives and 13,000 motocross jumps, he disclosed. 'No, no chance. He's a machine. He acts like a 20-year-old. And there's no magic there, it's just hard work and discipline with his food, nutrition and training," Eastwood said when he was asked whether Cruise might soon step back from such physically demanding roles. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which was released on May 17, stars Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Esai Morales, besides Tom Cruise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, it shows Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and the IMF team rush to stop the Entity, a rogue AI that can annihilate mankind.
