You'll live, die and repeat watching this Tom Cruise sci-fi action movie on Peacock this weekend

When looking for a movie to watch this weekend, look no further than "Edge of Tomorrow," which was just added to Peacock at the beginning of the month. Some movies, you have to be in the right mood to watch. Others, you need to have just the right home theater setup to enjoy. But this sci-fi action movie can be enjoyed anywhere, and it might just be Tom Cruise's last great performance in a movie that wasn't a sequel to one of his many other roles. I'm not being hyperbolic either when I say that this movie can be watched anywhere. The first time I watched it was on a plane, and I had a blast. To be fair, action movies are the perfect plane movies, but this movie is just as enjoyable in the comfort of your own home, too. I'm not the only one who loves "Edge of Tomorrow" either. While the movie arguably underwhelmed at the box office, bringing in just enough money for Hollywood accounting to still declare it a bust, thanks to a massive $178 million budget. But that spending paid off with critics and audiences alike — it scored a 91% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a nearly identical 90% from audiences. So if you're subscribed to Peacock, this is the movie to watch this weekend across all the best streaming services. It's one of the best action movies of the 2010s, and more importantly, it's just fun to watch. "Edge of Tomorrow" is based on the Japanese light novel "All You Need Is Kill." It's set in a near-future version of Earth, where an alien race known as "Mimics" has conquered most of continental Europe, forcing humanity to unite into a global military force, known as the United Defense Force (UDF). The UDF still struggles against the mimics, though, until Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) leads the UDF to victory at the Battle of Verdun. This sparks confidence in the UDF, which, led by General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), decides to invade France to reclaim the country. But when Brigham orders Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience, to cover the invasion, the cowardly major tries to blackmail the general to avoid the dangerous assignment. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Peacock Premium offers hit original shows, NBCUniversal movies and live sports, all starting at $10.99 a month. That backfires spectacularly, with Cage now demoted to Private and forced to serve with the infantry in the invasion. The move is intended to get Cage killed, which it does, but not before he's bathed in the blood of an "Alpha" Mimic — causing him to awake back in England just before the invasion. At this point, the movie really begins, with Cruise stuck in an endless cycle of waking up, getting thrown into battle and getting killed. But he starts to improve with each death, as he retains the memories from his past lives even after his deaths. This is one of two things that make "Edge of Tomorrow" work. First, there is the action, which is well executed and well paced. The movie is just 113 minutes long, giving it little time to linger in one place too long, and despite being very heavy on the CGI, it looks good, including the combat between the CGI Mimics against humans in CGI battle suits. In another movie, this would have looked cheap at the time and aged terribly, but the time and money invested in this movie's visual effects still pays off to this day. But the other thing that makes this sci-fi movie work is that the time travel element is fun, a welcome plot device rather than a paradox-laden rabbit hole to dive into. I won't spoil exactly how the time loop functions, which is revealed later in the movie, but when you realize what's happening, you don't question whether or not it works or not you just strap yourself in for the rest of the ride. So go stream "Edge of Tomorrow" on Peacock now, and enjoy. Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022 and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

Once a cage fighter, Keith (The Dean of Mean) Jardine transitions to movie director

Keith (The Dean of Mean) Jardine wore many hats before making his name as a mixed martial arts fighter in the UFC, where he registered wins over future Hall of Famers Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell and Forrest Griffin. The former wildland firefighter, miner and bounty hunter has since found a new career, progressing from acting to writing and directing his first feature film. 'Kill Me Again,' starring Canadian Brendan Fehr, opens Friday and is available to stream on a variety of platforms. As the 49-year-old Jardine describes it, the film is 'Groundhog Day' featuring a serial killer. Fehr plays Charlie, also known as the Midnight Mangler, who finds himself trapped in a time loop in a diner. Bloody mayhem ensues — with a twist — as Charlie attempts, unsuccessfully, to reassert control over his life. 'I was always fascinated with the time loop genre, 'Edge of Tomorrow' and 'Groundhog Day' and all that. Like what can I do? What's interesting? What's my flavour on this thing?' Jardine said in an interview. 'What if the protagonist is a serial killer? That's super-interesting. What if we had to walk in the steps of a serial killer through one of his most notorious crimes, and we have to live that over and over and over with him? That was fascinating to me. I knew I had something magical, and I started raising money from then on.' Enough money for a 12-night shoot in New Mexico, where both Jardine and Fehr make their homes, from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. It was a gruelling schedule complicated by the fact that the plot features time repeating itself. 'Everything had to match up … That was a hell of an undertaking,' said Jardine. Fehr, who said he kept copious notes to keep track of when and where he was emotionally in each scene, said he was taken aback when he first read the script. 'I just went 'Oh, that's scary.' And that's not in the serial killer/horror sense but in the 'Do I have the ability to pull this off?'' he said. 'And those are generally the roles that you should be doing, that you should gravitate towards … it's the ones where you question yourself and doubt yourself that you're going to grow as an actor, grow as a person.' Jardine, who also acts in the film, got what he wanted from Fehr playing 'a really really bad guy.' 'There's not too many actors who can pull off what he did on such a tight schedule. He's in every scene … And only he is charismatic enough to get the audience actually pulling for him. All of a sudden, you start rooting for him in a way. What a strange thing that is. And that was my goal when I wrote the movie.' Jardine credits his cast and crew, including cinematographer Juergen Heinemann, for helping bring his vision to life. Fehr, meanwhile, praises Jardine for being open and collaborative during the condensed shoot. Jardine's pro MMA career stretched from 2001 to 2012, ending in a decision loss to Brazil's Roger Gracie in the Strikeforce promotion. He retired with a 17-11-2 record, including a 6-7-0 stretch in the UFC. A cast member of Season 2 of 'The Ultimate Fighter' reality TV show in 2005, Jardine started acting while still fighting. Initially typecast — his credits include roles as a bouncer, Russian thug and burly doorman — Jardine branched out into stunt work and earned meatier roles. He has some 61 entries on his IMDb filmography, including credits for such films as 'John Wick,' 'Crank,' 'Inherent Vice,' and the TV mini-series 'Godless.' Jardine says he turned down a lot of roles in a bid to escape the UFC fighter tag. 'It has been a journey,' he said. In 2022, he wrote and directed the short film 'El Paso 11:55' which also featured Fehr and former fighters Donald (Cowboy) Cerrone and Tait Fletcher. Cerrone and Fletcher are both in 'Kill Me Again,' as are fellow fighters Maurice (The Crochet Boss) Greene and Michelle (The Karate Hottie) Waterson. The success of the short, in which Fehr plays a man with a bag of cash waiting for the night bus to El Paso, helped him put together 'Kill Me Again.' 'It was a learning process,' Jardine said. 'Every step of the way, from the financing to writing, casting actors to the actual shoot and editing … And now getting the movie sold and set for release.' 'My fingerprints are on everything in this movie.' Jardine's film company is called Broken Ear Productions, a nod to his MMA background. The former fighter got to know Fehr while the two filmed the NBC series 'The Night Shift' and offered him the role in 'El Paso 11:55' when the original lead dropped out. 'He's Canadian, so that obviously means he's an MMA fan,' said Jardine. 'So we hit it off.' Fehr was born in B.C., growing up in the Lower Mainland before moving to Winnipeg with his family when he was 12. He initially started modelling and kind of fell into acting while planning to become a math teacher. 'They didn't think I was going to make it as a model, which I couldn't argue with. But they said, 'You've got an interesting enough look to be an actor.'' Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. Good call. Now 47 and a father of three, Fehr's extensive resume includes starring on 'Roswell' and 'CSI: Miami.' 'Kill Me Again' reunites him with female lead Majandra Delfino, whom he dated while working on 'Roswell,' which aired from 1999 to 2002. Jardine, meanwhile, leaves later this month for Morocco to wrap up filming Season 2 of 'The Terminal List.' — This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 6, 2025

Set in the near future, All You Need Is Kill follows the story of Rita, a resourceful but isolated young woman volunteering to help rebuild Japan after the mysterious appearance of a massive alien flower known as 'Darol.' When Darol unexpectedly erupts in a deadly event, unleashing monstrous creatures that decimate the population, Rita is caught in the destruction—and killed. But then she wakes up again. And again. Caught in an endless time loop, Rita must navigate the trauma and repetition of death until she crosses paths with Keiji, a shy young man trapped in the same cycle. Together, they fight to break free from the loop and find meaning in the chaos around them. 'With All You Need Is Kill, I wanted to convey that even in the endless loop of life, we can still make discoveries and grow, depending on how we perceive the situation,' said Akimoto. 'All You Need Is Kill is a standout work that explores time, identity, and survival with breathtaking animation and a powerful emotional core,' said Gkids President Dave Jesteadt. 'The story has remained so meaningful for years because it captures something essential about the human condition, and the need to keep moving forward. Director Akimoto has created a brilliant new take that we are sure fans will love.' Gkids and Studio 4°C have previously collaborated on releases for Mind Game, Children of the Sea, while Gkids also recently acquired ChaO, and several other celebrated titles. Further details on the release will be announced at a later date. The deal was negotiated between GKIDS' Director of Acquisitions and Development Rodney Uhler, and Warner Bros. Japan. Did 'MobLand' just kill off Tom Hardy? Boss explains

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Season 1 of the Paramount+ drama 'MobLand' ended on Sunday, June 1, wrapping up the hit series starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren. When it premiered on March 30, the crime drama broke records as the streamer's biggest global series launch ever, drawing 2.2 million viewers on premiere day. 12 Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' At the end of the Season 1 finale, mob fixer Harry Da Souza's (Hardy) wife, Jan (Joanne Froggatt), accidentally stabs him in the chest with a knife during an argument. The burning question: is that fatal? 'I mean, if you think about it, 'is Harry dead?'' writer and executive producer Jez Butterworth exclusively told The Post. 'No. We're not gonna – We love Harry. We love Tom.' 12 Emily Barber as Alice, Joanne Froggatt as Jan Da Souza and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ Butterworth, who also co-wrote the 2014 Tom Cruise movie 'Edge of Tomorrow,' added, 'I felt strongly that throughout the whole tale, the ball that he kept dropping was his home life,' referring how Harry and his wife were having friction, due to her unhappiness with his job. 'It felt satisfyingly dramatic that having walked through fire for 10 episodes, what happens at the end is the one thing he's not expecting.' The show follows the Harrigans, a London crime family led by patriarch Conrad (Brosnan). His wife Mave (Mirren) frequently schemes behind his back. She hates his illegitimate daughter, Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon), and fawns over his sociopathic grandson, Eddie (Anson Boon). Over the course of the season, one of their sons, Brendan (Daniel Betts), got brutally killed by an enemy, while their other son, Kevin (Paddy Considine), came into his own. 12 Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza and Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Getty Images for Paramount Plus Harry is their fixer who cleans up their messes, at the expense of his home life. Since Harry and Jan have been married for over a decade, one might think she'd be used to his line of work. 'I think in all relationships, the things that we like at first gradually drive you crazy…[Harry] is too freewheelling,' Butterworth, a Tony-winning playwright who also co-wrote the 2015 James Bond film 'Spectre,' explained. 'I think what you're seeing here [between Harry and Jan] is just the attritional cost of dealing with this level of unpredictability, anxiety and stress.' 12 Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza, Mandeep Dhillon as Seraphina Harrigan and Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ 12 Helen Mirren as Maeve Harrigan and Anson Boon as Eddie Harriganin 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ Paramount has not announced a Season 2 yet. But if Season 2 happens, Butterworth hopes that the 'chaotic' dynamic of the family will continue. 'They resemble most families, which is to say, they're chaos. I can't be working out in my family who's the craziest! That's going to continue.' 12 Paddy Considine as Kevin Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Jason Bell/Paramount+ 12 Helen Mirren as Maeve Harrigan in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ He added that if the show continues, it will also keep its focus on the 'beating heart,' of the story, which is the 'Jeeves and Wooster relationship that Harry has with this family,' he said, referring to the '90s British sitcom about a wealthy man and his valet who gets him out of mishaps. Conrad hasn't exactly run a tight ship. His family is full of double crossing, impulsive actions, and scheming. 'I liked the idea of coming in at a point where perhaps their great days are behind them, and for that to be the test that Conrad is presented with, and that he has to meet the challenge of,' said Butterworth, who also wrote the screenplay for the Matt Damon and Christian Bale sports drama 'Ford v Ferrari.' 12 Paddy Considine as Kevin Harrigan and Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ 'We've been watching somebody who is perhaps questioning if they are at the end of their reign. Are they going to be able to rise to that and overcome that? I think that's a fascinating narrative.' The Season 1 finale also killed off the Harrigan's adversary, Ritchie (Geoff Bell). At times, he was sympathetic. 'I loved the fact — and a lot of it's down to the actor — that he has a melancholy quality that really makes you feel sorry for somebody who is a monster,' said Butterworth. 12 Geoff Bell as Richie Stevenson in 'MobLand.' Luke Varley/Paramount+ '[Ritchie] was not a monster. He had a monster in him. Whereas, I think Conrad is a monster with a human being [in him] that's trying to be heard. It's a slightly different balance.' 'It was a sad day when I felt that Richie's time had run out,' he continued. 'But I also wanted to squeeze all of the juice out of that particular storyline, and leave us in a position where we could vault from it and move on.' As for the future of 'MobLand' if renewed, he told The Post: 'I'd like this to run for as long as it fascinates and delights and stimulates an audience. If it's doing that, then long may it continue.'
