Australian man in court after Stone of Destiny glass 'broken' at Scottish museum
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Get the latest Edinburgh Live breaking news on WhatsApp A man arrested for allegedly damaging the glass which protects the Stone of Destiny has been remanded in custody. Perth Museum was evacuated amid claims a man in a kilt tried to smash through a display case that houses the stone - which used to be displayed in Edinburgh Castle - on Saturday, July 12, reports the Daily Record. A 35-year-old man was detained by police and taken in to custody. Arnaud Harixcalde Logan appeared at Perth Sheriff Court on Monday, July 14. Logan faced a single charge of malicious mischief - intentionally damaging property - during the private hearing. The 35-year-old, whose address was given on court papers as Sydney, Australia, made no plea to the charge. He was remanded in custody and the case against him was continued for prosecutors to investigate further. Visitors to the attraction said the alleged incident was "like something out of a historical drama or an action film". Museum tours were brought to an end as the building was evacuated and then stormed by police officers. Perth Museum said the historic stone, used in the coronation of Scottish kings for hundreds of years, was not damaged. Police Scotland also confirmed nobody was injured in the incident. Tourist Elle Alvarez, visiting Scotland from the Philippines, posted a video of the incident on Facebook. She said: "It's honestly surreal, like something out of a historical drama or an action film. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish our tour because of the incident. "Huge credit to the staff at Perth Museum for handling the situation with such calm and professionalism, making sure all visitors were safe and looked after." The 150kg object, also known as the Stone of Scone, was taken from Scotland during the Wars of Independence. It was lodged in King Edward's carved-oak coronation throne at Westminster Abbey where it remained for 700 years. Over Christmas in 1950, four Glasgow University students notoriously managed to steal the stone from the Abbey and temporarily return it to Scotland. The stone returned for permanent display in Scotland in 1996 at Edinburgh Castle, before being moved to its current home in Perth last year, 2024. A spokesperson for Culture Perth and Kinross said: "We can confirm there was an incident at Perth Museum where a man was arrested. "Perth Museum was evacuated as a precaution and there was no damage to any artefacts on display. We are assisting Police Scotland with their inquiries."

Outlander stars rave about this Edinburgh restaurant after surprise visit
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Get the latest Edinburgh Live breaking news on WhatsApp Stars of the hit television series Outlander were spotted at one of Edinburgh's most popular restaurants after popping in for a bite. Outlander, now running into its eighth and final season, has been a sensation from the outset. The historical drama series is set in Scotland and features a cast chock-full of Scottish talent. Staff at The Kitchin, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Leith, were delighted to host members of the Outlander cast, sharing an image to social media of owner Tom Kitchin with the actors. Among the stars was John Hunter Bell, who played "Young Ian" Murray in Outlander as well as Bain in two of the Hobbit films, and Charles Vandervaart, famous for his portrayal of William Ransom in season seven of Outlander Edinburgh celebrity chef Tom Kitchin is captured posing with the actors. The post's caption reads: "It's always special to welcome members of the Outlander family to the restaurants." Charles commented on the post, saying: "Amazing time! Thanks for having us!" John added: "Out of this world!" The eatery is no stranger to famous guests. John and Charles are not even the first of the Outlander cast to visit The Kitchin. In October 2023, the Michelin-star establishment welcomed Duncan Lacroix, who plays Murtagh Frasier in the series. It also hosted series lead Sam Heughan, who plays titular character Jamie Fraser, in 2024. Seemingly a favourite among Outlander stars, Sam returned to The Kitchin earlier this year to mark his 45th birthday on April 30. Tom Kitchin, owner and founder of The Kitchin, also runs The Scran & Scallie in Edinburgh and Bonnie Badger in Gullane. Another eatery, Kora, previously on Bruntsfield Place, closed earlier this year. The Kitchin, located at 78 Commercial Quay in Leith, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12pm-2.30pm and 6pm-10pm. You can find more information about the restaurant here.

Life on Edinburgh's Princes Street as high streets suffer 'decades of decline'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info New figures show one in eight of Scotland's high street shops are empty following 'decades of decline'. Scottish Labour have called for rates to be slashed for local businesses to improve the growing problem. But the Scottish Government pointed to a rates relief package worth around £733 million, with a spokesperson adding: 'We are working with businesses to drive economic growth and prosperity…this includes the most generous small business rates relief in the UK.' So Edinburgh Live checked in on Princes Street, to see how Edinburgh's famous thoroughfare is shaping up. In 2023-24 the average rate of empty shops across Scotland rose to 12.3 percent, up from 11.9 percent the previous year. Edinburgh has a lower proportion of empty shopfronts, at 5.4 percent. But Princes Street has come under fire in recent years, with residents branding it 'a disgrace' and 'embarrassing' on social media. Shopkeepers complain of theft, antisocial behaviour and littering while locals object to the broken paving slabs, litter and empty shopfronts. (Image: Edinburgh Live) But things could be looking up for the historic high street, with new hotels and shops filling the empty gaps, and the police vowing to crack down on anti-social behaviour and youth disorder. Muhammad Amin, who runs phone repair and accessory shop Mobile Plus, said that during school holidays they still have problems with anti-social behaviour from kids. He explained how teens throw food and bottles into the shop, just to get a rise out of him. He also has trouble getting drunk people to leave the premises. He said: 'We call the police when trouble starts, but they always take too long to arrive. 'At our old shop in Glasgow there weren't so many problems… you get to know the troublemakers and it's easier to deal with.' Despite this, Amin had a positive attitude looking forward. He was happy that the street cleaners had, for the first time in two and a half years, cleaned his shopfront of rubbish and weeds. (Image: Edinburgh Live) Visitors were also positive about Princes Street. Amy and Mcclean Titterington, from Texas, chose Edinburgh for their honeymoon and spoke highly of the area. Amy said: "The gardens are gorgeous, and it's easy to spot [and avoid] the touristy shops on Princes Street… Obviously there is a fair bit of construction at the moment, but that's okay." Her husband added: 'You can easily spot the gimmicky shops.' But Alex Currie, a local, believed the street had seen better days. 'I like Princes Street, but its charm has been diluted by tourist traps and too many sweet shops. 'It has almost been replaced by the St James Quarter, where a lot of the high-end shops have moved to. 'The east end of Princes Street is still really good though, and I think once the construction is finished at Jenners the whole area will look a lot better.' Although not a fan of tourist and sweet shops, Alex conceded they were better than empty shop fronts. Edinburgh Council chiefs, meanwhile, launched a plan to 'revitalise' Princes Street in 2024. The proposals included more pop-up stalls and improvements to the pavements. They also said they would introduce street art and building wraps.
