Smoke Trailer: Taron Egerton Hunts a Serial Arsonist in New Apple TV+ Show

Apple TV+ has released a blazing new trailer for its new crime drama, Smoke, starring Emmy Award nominee Taron Egerton. It is set to debut on the streamer on June 27. Best known for his roles in Robin Hood, Rocketman, Tetris, and the Kingsman film series, Smoke serves as Egerton's latest project following Netflix's Carry-On in 2024. The forthcoming series also marks the actor's latest project with Apple TV+ after he starred as James Keene in the true crime drama Black Bird back in 2022. 'Smoke follows an arson investigator who begrudgingly teams up with a police detective as their race to stop two arsonists ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions,' the plot description reads. Billed as a 'gripping crime drama,' the newly released trailer for Smoke introduces Egerton's Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator unraveling a series of destructive fires. Working alongside Jurnee Smollett's Detective Michell Calderon, who Dave initially doubts due to her lack of experience in arson cases, the two struggle to find significant leads concerning the two serial arsonists. They now must work against the clock before the unfortunate event claims more lives. 'Serial arsonists tend to be powerless in their own lives. They want other people to know what that feels like,' Egerton's Dave said in the trailer. You can watch the trailer for Smoke down below: Smoke is inspired by Firebug podcast, which was hosted by Kary Antholis. Egerton also serves as one of the show's executive producers. It is created and written by Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane. The rest of the cast includes Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Anna Chlumsky, Adina Porter, Greg Kinnear, and John Leguizamo. The first two episodes of Smoke will arrive on Apple TV+ on June 27, with new episodes arriving Fridays through August 15. Where there's 'Smoke,' there's fire. Taron Egerton reunites with his 'Black Bird' creator Dennis Lehane for another Apple TV+ series, this time about an arson investigator who is haunted by the ashes of past cases. The nine-episode crime drama 'Smoke' is inspired by true events as captured in acclaimed 'Firebug' podcast, hosted by Kary Antholis. The official synopsis for the series reads: ''Smoke' follows arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton) who begrudgingly teams up with police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) as their race to stop two arsonists ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions.' Egerton told IndieWire that filming the tense show, which co-starred Paul Walter Hauser, was an emotional experience. 'I was in New Orleans for six and a half, seven moments. I didn't see my family. I had just been through a breakup,' he said. 'I was ready to throw myself into this creative experience, and when it was done it was almost like the illusion shattered and my own life came rushing through the cracks again. So I didn't really have much of a choice. … The challenge of the role is he's such a fucking insufferable pig in the first episode. Can I keep him with me for this long?' 'Smoke' premieres on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, June 27, followed by new episodes every Friday through August 15. Check out the trailer below. Charlize Theron spotted sneaking out of Australia after filming Netflix thriller in Sydney

Charlize Theron has exited Australia as discreetly as she arrived. Four months after first touching down on our shores to film the upcoming Netflix blockbuster Apex in NSW, the Hollywood star was seen departing the country via Sydney Airport. It seems during her months-long stay, our laid-back lifestyle has rubbed off on the star, who was seen rocking the quintessential Aussie combo of socks and sandals as she strolled through the terminal. The 49-year-old did appear to wear the same black sunglasses and brown hat as she did when she arrived back in January, adding a touch of Hollywood to her otherwise ordinary outfit. Welsh actor Taron Egerton, who like Theron arrived back in January, was also in town for the Netflix thriller, which was filmed in parts of Sydney and the Blue Mountains, including Glenbrook Gorge and Ginninderra Falls. In Apex, Theron plays a grieving woman who seeks solace in the wilderness. An adrenaline junkie and rock climber, she embarks on a river run only to discover she is being hunted by a serial killer. Per Deadline, Apex has been described as ' Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs ', and Theron has also signed on as a co-producer. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and also stars Aussie actor Eric Bana. Filming aside, Theron enjoyed her time in Australia, with the star spotted attending Dua Lipa's Sydney concert earlier this month with her daughters, Jackson, 11, and August, 7. The Hollywood A-lister was even invited backstage by the pop star and the pair posed for happy photos together, while one of Theron's daughters showed of her cartwheeling skills backstage. 'Oh what a night! @dualipa, ï¸' Theron captioned the pics on Instagram, to which the singer replied in a comment, 'You're the coolesï¸t.' As for her co-star Egerton, he is fast becoming a major star for Netflix. Just recently, he played the lead role in the action thriller Carry On, which was a smashing success for the streamer. The film follows a TSA agent (Egerton) who is being blackmailed by a mysterious passenger (played by Jason Bateman) to allow a bag containing a deadly nerve agent on board a flight. The film topped Netflix's Top 10 List for a full three weeks during the Christmas period. From the 10 days since it premiered on December 13, Carry On had already recorded 97.1 million views worldwide. The film has since become the second-most-watched English-language film ever on Netflix, amassing a whopping 172 million since its release. Netflix's top-performing original movie of all time is the 2021 action comedy Red Notice, starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, with 230.9 million views.

Award-winning Boston bookstore is dedicated to spotlighting Black and Brown authors

A bookstore in Boston's Nubian Square is the only Black-owned bookstore in the city and it's known for embracing literature and the community for almost 20 years. At Frugal Bookstore in Roxbury, it's about more than the literary works lining the shelves but the community they've served since 2008. "I've always been a reader, you know, so the chance to have a bookstore, for one, was big," said co-owner Leonard Egerton. "And then to have a bookstore in the community that I grew up in was huge. To be able to provide children and adults with books with people who look like them, it's big." For Egerton and his wife Clarissa Cropper Egerton, it's all about making sure their customers connect with the pages they read. "People love our selection of books because they can see themselves on the covers of the books and inside the stories of the books," said Cropper Egerton. With a special spotlight on Black and Brown authors, Frugal is not just about selling books but about celebrating culture. The neighborhood fixture has become a hotspot in Roxbury. It also gained national attention on The Drew Barrymore Show after a fire in the building damaged part of the store. "We had a huge increase in our online sales," said Cropper Egerton. In 2024, the city of Boston awarded Frugal Bookstore as a legacy business for their contribution to the community. This past February, they were named as one of the top 13 best Black-owned bookstores in the country by travel publication Afar. "And they just keep coming because they know that it's needed," said Egerton. Frugal Bookstore is filling the need for a place where everyone feels at home as they live up to their motto "Changing minds one book at a time." "It's joyous in a word to see a child come in and say, 'Oh, I've read that book,' 'Oh, she looks like me' or 'He looks like me,'" said Egerton. "I want to thank the community and all of our supporters and customers who over the years has been, I don't know, like almost 18 years and just thank you for your support and we really appreciate it," said Cropper Egerton.

Edgerton previously submitted a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and a suggestion of incompetence to stand trial in July 2024. Surveillance video showed him throwing a small propane tank at the front doors. Police said he threw a lit match in the trash can, starting a fire that made the tank explode. In body camera first aired by News Center 7 in July, officers went to his apartment to arrest him on a warrant for arson the night of the fire. In the video, one of their body cameras fell to the ground and caught the moment Egerton pointed a gun at officers. Police then shot at him, but no one was hit in the gunfire. Police later said it turned out Egerton had a CO-2 BB gun. Egerton was arrested and has remained in the Miami County Jail since then. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
