What are the 10 Biggest College Football Rivalries of All Time?
Rivalries, both in-conference and out-of-conference, are among the best elements of college football. More often than not, the schedule is devised so that teams play their No. 1 historical opponent in the last week of the regular season. These rivalries include recruiting battles, amazing late-game finishes and some of the best matchups in all of sports; there are too many of them to count. Here are the 10 biggest college football rivalries of all time, according to FOX Sports Research. If you lose this game, don't expect to be greeted well by the locals for the next 365 days. A two-hour drive separating the two schools who compete in the yearly "Egg Bowl," Ole Miss and Mississippi State make for the rivalry in the state of Mississippi. The first game in the rivalry's history was Nov. 24, 1932, with Ole Miss getting a 13-0 victory. And, overall, the Rebels have the upper hand in the all-time series, boasting a 57-30-4 record. Of late, this game has usually been played on Thanksgiving Night or on Black Friday. Last year, Texas officially joined the SEC, allowing it to play in-state rival Texas A&M for the first time in 13 years, with the Longhorns getting a 17-7 win on the road at College Station. This matchup was traditionally played at the end of the regular season when the two schools were each in the Big 12. Texas A&M won the first meeting between the two teams on Nov. 19, 1915, 13-0. The Longhorns have historically gotten the better of the Aggies, however, boasting a 77-37-5 all-time record. With the two schools back in the same conference, expect heated recruiting battles and anticipated Saturday night matchups in November. From 1922-2010, Utah and BYU were each in the same conference before the Utes joined the Pac-12 and the Cougars became an independent for the 2011 season. As part of the historic conference realignment, the two schools each joined the Big 12 in 2024, allowing two schools separated by one hour to be arch rivals once again — and not just face off once in a while. BYU has won each of the last two matchups against Utah in "The Holy War," but the former has a 62-36-4 all-time record against the former. Much like the aforementioned Texas rivalry, expect the inner-Utah battle to spice up in the coming years. Two of the most historic programs in college football are in neighboring states and play each other every year at a neutral site in Jacksonville. Granted, Gainesville (Florida) is much closer to Jacksonville than Athens (Georgia). The Bulldogs have had the Gators number of late, winning seven of the last eight matchups and owning a 56-44-2 record in the all-time series. But that doesn't mean the Gators haven't had their share of success over the Bulldogs. For instance, Florida got the better of Georgia in the Tim Tebow era (2006-09) and won 18 of 21 over Georgia from 1990-2010. An arduous, seven-to-eight-hour drive separates Florida State from Miami, but it's still an in-state rivalry, nevertheless — and a tightly contested one, with the Hurricanes having a slim, 36-33 record against the Seminoles. The ACC teams first squared off on Oct. 5, 1951, with Miami getting the first of five consecutive wins over Florida State and eight of nine victories. Later, the Seminoles returned the favor with a seven-game winning streak over the Hurricanes, and it has continued to be a rivalry of streaks. Miami won the 2024 meeting, but Florida State had won the previous three. It's a matchup of one team that can see the Pacific Ocean and one team that pays homage to Rudy. Put them in a blender, and it makes for one of the best rivalries in collegiate sports and two historic venues: LA Memorial Coliseum and Notre Dame Stadium. Whether it be Matt Leinart's goal-line sneak to get USC a win in South Bend in 2005 or Notre Dame putting together a game-winning touchdown drive in the final minutes of a 2010 game in L.A., this matchup has continually delivered. Of late, the Fighting Irish have had their way with the Trojans, winning six of the last seven meetings and having a combined 52-37-5 record in the series. "America's Game" is not only a great football game but the most meaningful one of them all, as the two service academies play at a neutral site every December in the all-important Army-Navy game. Another matchup that has been one of streaks, the Midshipmen have a 63-55-7 record against the Black Knights. The first-ever matchup was in 1890, with Navy getting a 24-0 win. After Navy won 14 consecutive games over Army from 2002-15, the latter changed the tide in 2016 and has won six of the last nine contests. Two years ago (2023), the game was literally decided by inches, as Army kept Navy out of the end zone on a quarterback sneak at the 2-yard line with one second remaining. This matchup is a battle up front from start to finish. "The Red River Showdown" is fierce, a great environment (the game is played at a neutral site in Dallas) and makes for an intense scuffle. The first-ever meeting between Texas and Oklahoma was a mere one-point Sooner victory in 1950. In 2020, the two teams played into a fourth overtime, with the Sooners escaping with the victory. The Longhorns have won two of the last three games, with those wins combining for a whopping 83-3 score, but the Sooners have the narrow lead in the all-time series, 37-31-3. Previously bitter Big 12 rivals, the two schools each joined the SEC in 2024, with their yearly game at Cotton Bowl Stadium remaining intact. Every year, the state of Alabama is on the line in the "Iron Bowl," which has delivered some of the most memorable moments in college football. In 2013, Alabama attempted a would-be, game-winning 58-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter, but Cody Parkey's kick missed. Then, Chris Davis ran the missed kick back 100 yards for a walk-off touchdown in arguably the most chilling finish in the history of the sport. Recently, Alabama pulled off a pair of miracle wins against Auburn, including a 97-yard touchdown drive with under two minutes to play and no timeouts to force overtime and later win in 2021. In 2023, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe completed a go-ahead and eventual game-winning, 31-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to Isaiah Bond with 32 seconds remaining in the game. The Crimson Tide have won the last five games and are 51-37-1 in the all-time series. These two programs literally hate each other. It's called "The Game" for a reason, as Michigan and Ohio State make for a timeless college football rivalry and the best in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State lost or tied each of its first 14 games against Michigan, including an 86-0 defeat in 1902. Following the 14th all-time meeting, this has been a dead heat of a rivalry. Whether it be Desmond Howard's Heisman pose, Curtis Samuel's overtime walk-off touchdown for Ohio State in 2016 or Michigan trying to plant a flag on Ohio Stadium after its 2024 upset victory, there are countless iconic moments, great finishes and entertainment implanted in this Rustbelt hatred. Egg Bowl 2025 date: Ole Miss, Mississippi State football to play on Black Friday
The 2025 Egg Bowl between Mississippi State football and Ole Miss will be played on Black Friday again, according to announcements by both programs. Kickoff at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Nov. 28. The TV channel has not yet been announced. Advertisement It will be the second season in a row that the Rebels and Bulldogs will play the Egg Bowl on Black Friday instead of Thanksgiving. The 2025 game was originally slated for Saturday when the SEC schedules were released on Dec. 11, but it was likely going to move to Thanksgiving or Black Friday. Ole Miss won the 2024 Egg Bowl 26-14 in Oxford. It will be the 98th Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Ole Miss leads the all-time series 60-30-5. Mississippi State basketball hosting home game on Black Friday MSU also announced it will be hosting a basketball home game against SMU at Humphrey Coliseum on Black Friday. Where does Auburn-Alabama rank among the best rivalries in the SEC? Does USA TODAY Sports feel that the Iron Bowl is the best rivalry in the SEC? College football fans from the state of Alabama would agree that the annual Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama is the best rivalry not only in the SEC, but in all of college football. Does one expert from USA TODAY Sports agree? With the discussion of the SEC's possible move from eight conference games to nine, USA TODAY Sports columnist Blake Toppmeyer shared his ranking of the SEC's top rivalries and how likely they are to continue should the SEC change its scheduling format. Toppmeyer places the Iron Bowl in a category with the Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State and the Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas as "non-negotioables" and feels that those three rivalries are safe from elimination. Not only does Toppmeyer feel strongly that the Iron Bowl should not be touched with possible expansion, but he feels that it is the conference's best rivalry. He puts the Iron Bowl at No. 1 ahead of Red River, the Egg Bowl, and the World's Largest Cocktail Party, citing implications that are usually at stake when the Tigers and Tide meet on the field. Instate rivalries hit differently, especially when that state is football-crazed Alabama. As an Auburn fan once said, the Iron Bowl isn't life or death. It's much bigger than that. There been national title implications and memorable moments that serve to add to the lore. There are only four SEC rivalries that feature instate teams. Auburn-Alabama and Ole Miss-Mississippi State have been the most intense over the years, with Texas-Texas A&M becoming prominent with the Longhorns joining the conference last year. However, the Iron Bowl takes the cake as far as the magnitude of games it has produced in past years. The 2010 game was special as Auburn stormed back from 24-point deficit to knock off Alabama and keep its national title hopes alive, Auburn won the 2013 game thanks to the infamous "kick six" return, and the Tigers knocked off their second No. 1 team in three weeks when it beat Alabama in 2017. On the opposite end, Alabama snuck away from Auburn in 2009 to stay alive in the SEC title hunt, and used the "grave digger" play to beat Auburn in 2023 with a hail mary on 4th and 31. The game has produced several special memories such as the four-overtime game in 2022 and the 2014 game that saw both teams combine to post 1,169 total yards in Alabama's 55-44 win over Auburn. The Crimson Tide has won five games in a row over Auburn during the Tigers' rebuilding phase. However, Hugh Freeze hopes to begin closing the gap this season when the two teams meet at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Nov. 29. The 10 best SEC football rivalries ranked as conference schedule expansion is up for debate
The SEC cares so deeply for its rivalries that it once built its interdivisional schedule model around preserving the Auburn-Georgia and Alabama-Tennessee games. And those matchups don't even rank as the No. 1 rivalry for those schools. Then, the SEC built an eight-game conference schedule model for the 2024 and 2025 seasons that retained primary and prominent secondary rivalries after the conference expanded to 16 teams. Advertisement The two-year schedule format to accommodate Oklahoma and Texas joining the league served as a stop gap while conference brass continued to mull a long-term schedule plan. SEC officials have, for years, debated increasing from an eight- to a nine-game conference schedule. The league membership consistently decided to stay at eight. The SEC must soon consider that age-old question again, with a scheduling solution needed for 2026 and beyond. The SEC spring meetings, which begin May 27, offer a stage for the schedule debate to revive. Oklahoma and Texas could help tip the vote to approve expansion. The rivalry tentacle attaches to the debate. A nine-game conference schedule offers avenues to annually retain not only primary rivalries, but also secondary rivalry games. Continuing with an eight-game schedule probably would mean dialing back secondary rivalries that the SEC steadfastly protected for so long. Advertisement Some matchups like the Iron Bowl, Egg Bowl and Red River are non-negotiable. They're going nowhere, no matter the format. The importance of other rivalries varies based on factors such as your age, where you're from, and the extent to which history matters to you. Here's how I rate the conference's 10 best rivalries, some of which likely would go on the chopping block if the eight-game schedule persists in perpetuity. 1. Alabama-Auburn (Iron Bowl) Instate rivalries hit differently, especially when that state is football-crazed Alabama. As an Auburn fan once said, the Iron Bowl isn't life or death. It's much bigger than that. There been national title implications and memorable moments that serve to add to the lore. 2. Oklahoma-Texas (Red River) When the SEC added Oklahoma and Texas, the conference didn't just gain two iconic brands, it acquired one of college football's best rivalries. Most games are better when played on college campuses, but this one at the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair of Texas stands as an exception to that rule. 3. Mississippi-Mississippi State (Egg Bowl) Mississippians' chosen side in this rivalry points not just to their allegiance, but to their identity. Opposing sides don't just dislike each other. They despise each other. This rivalry often features a dash of zaniness. When Ole Miss won the game in 1926, fans of both teams stormed the field. Rebels fans went for the goal posts, and Mississippi State (then Mississippi A&M) fans rushed to fight Ole Miss fans. 4. Florida-Georgia This rivalry touts its own hall of fame dedicated to the series. The longtime designation of this rivalry as 'The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party' sums up the vibe for this game played in Jacksonville, Florida. 5. Texas-Texas A&M Thanksgiving week felt incomplete during the 12 seasons this rivalry went dormant after the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC. The SEC's addition of Texas rekindled the series. This game packs its stiffest punch when scheduled for Black Friday, like it is this year. The Texas fight song and the Aggie War Hymn each includes a line needling their in-state rival. 6. Alabama-LSU LSU counts as many rivals as any SEC team, but none is more collectively hated than Alabama. You can thank Nick Saban (and copious amounts of liquor in Louisiana) for that. LSU fans even burned Saban in effigy in 2008. Vitriol for Saban aside, this game became one of the nation's most influential clashes throughout the 2010s. 7. Auburn-Georgia As the 'Deep South's Oldest Rivalry,' no SEC series touts more history. Georgia's stretch of 11 victories in the past 12 matchups dulled the luster of a series that once delivered such thrills as the 'Prayer at Jordan-Hare.' Throughout its history, this ranks as one of the SEC's most evenly matched rivalries. 8. Alabama-Tennessee Saban's dominance took some shine off this series, but the Vols renewed vigor to 'The Third Saturday in October' after they upset Alabama in 2022, then tore down the goal posts and baptized them in the river. This rivalry features a distinct smell. When cigar smoke wafts through the stadium, you know the outcome has been decided. 9. LSU-Mississippi (Magnolia Bowl) The rivalry that supplied Billy Cannon's Halloween run and 'The Night the Clock Stopped' found its peak stride the past few seasons. Fans from the winning side stormed the field in each of the past three years. This rivalry is not as heated as some others, but its games usually supply rich entertainment value. 10. Florida-Tennessee This rivalry lacks the tradition of others, but at its crescendo in the 1990s and early 2000s, this September clash charted the course for SEC supremacy. The game peaked when it pitted Steve Spurrier against Phillip Fulmer, but, even now, animosity lingers between these fan bases.
