Canada's Leylah Fernandez wins Citi Open for 4th career WTA title

Social Sharing Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 for her fourth career WTA title at the Citi Open hardcourt tennis tournament on Sunday. Fernandez's last title came at Hong Kong in October 2023. Her most recent final had been a bit over a year ago when she was a runner-up to Daria Kasatkina on the grass of WTA 500 Eastbourne. The Laval, Que., native broke on four of her six chances, going 2 for 3 in each of the two sets in the one-hour, nine-minute match. Kalinskaya was held to just one break-point opportunity, which she did not convert, and only won 61.5 per cent of her first-serve points. Fernandez entered the match having come off a three-hour, 12-minute marathon of a three-set semifinal win over Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina on Saturday.

Fernandez dominates Kalinskaya to win DC Open

The 22-year-old bagged the first WTA 500 victory of her career and her first title since 2023 to win 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. The win completed a fairytale week for Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist who had beaten top seed Jessica Pegula and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on her way to the fourth title of her career. Fernandez got off to a blistering start, dominating Kalinskaya's serve to take the opening set in just 30 minutes. After three holds left Fernandez 2-1 up, the breakthrough came in the fourth game with Kalinskaya's serve looking increasingly vulnerable. The Russian was soon in trouble at 15-40 down, and then double-faulted to hand Fernandez the break and a 3-1 lead. Fernandez was having no such difficulty on serve and held comfortably for a 4-1 lead before going on to attack Kalinskaya's serve in the sixth game. The Canadian held two break points at 15-40 and duly converted the second for a 5-1 lead, lasering a backhand return to leave Kalinskaya rooted to the spot. A delicate drop shot at the net gave Fernandez the set in the next game. The second set mirrored the first, with Fernandez grabbing an early break to seize the initiative at 2-1 before breaking again soon afterwards for a 4-1 lead. The next two games went with serve but Fernandez made no mistake when serving for the match, converting the second of two match points.

Kalinskaya defeated Great Britain's Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday's other semifinal. Fernandez was ranked 36th in the world heading into the Citi Open. She is scheduled to play in the National Bank Open in Montreal this coming week. Leylah Fernandez will be trying to win her first WTA title of the season, and Anna Kalinskaya will seek the first of her career when they meet each other in the final of the hard-court D.C. Open. Fernandez, the runner-up at the 2021 US Open, hit 12 aces and picked up her second victory of the week against a top-20 opponent by beating 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) across 3 hours 16 minutes in the semifinals Saturday. Kalinskaya needed less than half as much time to eliminate Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-3 with the help of 14 backhand winners in the other women's semifinal. It was Raducanu who defeated Fernandez for the championship at Flushing Meadows four years ago. Both finalists are unseeded. Canada's Fernandez, who is 22 years old, is ranked 36th; Russia's Kalinskaya, 26, is ranked 48th. Kalinskaya moved into her third tour-level final. She went 0-2 in title matches last season. Fernandez, who got past top-seeded Jessica Pegula earlier in the week, owns three titles. Sunday's matchup will be her seventh career final. The men's semifinals were scheduled for later Saturday: No. 7 Alex de Minaur vs. Corentin Moutet and No. 4 Ben Shelton vs. No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
