London Marathon: Sawe wins men's race as Assefa sets women's record
Sabastian Sawe did not race extensively on the international circuit until he was 27, but three years on and this remarkable Kenyan distance runner destroyed a stellar field to win the London Marathon. For 30km it proved difficult to identify a winner from a group of nine athletes that included the great Eliud Kipchoge, the Olympic champion Tamirat Tola and the young man many believe will become the first to officially break the two-hour barrier, Jacob Kiplimo. But in Canary Wharf, Sawe, whose uncle Abraham Chepkirwok contested the Olympic 800m semi-finals in Beijing in 2008, decided it was time to spring a surprise attack as they passed a feeding station, missing out on his drink despite the warm spring sunshine and opening a decisive gap

BREAKING NEWS Sabastian Sawe WINS the London Marathon: Kenyan runner blows away men's competition - including Eliud Kipchoge - to win iconic race, while Tigst Assefa wins the women's event
Sebastian Sawe saw off a strong field to take an iconic victory in the London Marathon. The Kenyan bettered the great Eliud Kipchoge - widely regarded as the best ever men's marathon runner - to cross the line first on The Mall. In the women's race, Ethiopia 's Tigst Assefa won by a considerable distance on a sun-soaked morning in London, shattering the women's-only world record in the process. The 28-year-old Assefa, silver medallist in the event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, crossed the finish line in two hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds, beating the previous women's-only record of 2:16:16 set last year in London by Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir. Jepkosgei, 31, finished second in 2:18.44. The sizzling early pace was too much for reigning Olympic marathon champion and 2024 London winner Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who fell back off the leaders around the halfway mark en route to finishing third in 2:19.00. It was a Swiss double in the wheelchair events, with Marcel Hug racing to his sixth London marathon title in 1:25:25 and Catherine Debrunner winning her third women's title in four years in 1:34:18, missing her own world record by two seconds. A world record 56,000 runners were expected to participate in the 42.195-kilometre race that started at Greenwich Park, snaked along the River Thames before finishing on The Mall. More to follow.

Why do marathon runners wear arm sleeves?
WARM UP Why do marathon runners wear arm sleeves? Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUNNING arm sleeves have lately become a common sight at marathons. First popularised by elite athletes, they are now run by many marathon runners. Arm sleeves are primarily worn for the benefits of the compression they provide. Various sports medicine studies have shown that this compression helps to stabilise the arm muscles and prevent swelling. It also increases blood flow which help in recovery after hard exercise or minor injuries. Arm sleeves are also worn as a way to protect the skin from the sun - as most runners spend large portion of their time outside. While there are many benefits to running outside, doing so increases your exposure to the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays - but running sleeves can protect runners from this, along with the application of sunscreen. On the opposite end of the scale, arm sleeves can also provide runners with warmth if they are out training or running in cold weather. The running arm sleeves keep your arms nice and warm with protection from the wind - and therefore shield you slightly from the elements without having to wear another top. And if that wasn't enough - running arm sleeves can also keep runners safe when out at later times, if the sleeves have reflective detailing on them. Why do marathon runners wear gloves? Many marathon runners during the cooler months and start early in the morning before things warm up. Also, the other thing that happens is during the race the runners have a fairly high core body temperature, but as the race wears on and energy stores are lost, especially if conditions worsen. 2 Gloves can be a must in some conditions Credit: 2020 Martyn Wheatley / i-Images What to wear when running a marathon? A good combination is a technical t-shirt and mid to lightweight leggings. As well as gloves hats can be worn to keep warm as they are very light weight. Blankets are put over the runners at the end to help them maintain body temperature.
