Students graduate at Elms College's 94th commencement ceremony

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Nearly 400 students from Elms College graduated Saturday morning at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. UMass Amherst hosts 155th commencement with 20,000 attendees This marks the college's 94th commencement ceremony. Graduates received their associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. One of the students told 22News that because of her time at Elms, she is more equipped to work as a nurse. 'My teachers did a really good job at kind of setting up what it's going to be like working in the real world and giving me the certain resources to use, to help better prepare myself for that,' said Maya Grywalski, who received her Bachelor of Science and Nursing at Elms College. Honorary degrees were also awarded to the retired president and CEO of Appleton Corporation and an alumnus of the college, who is also a community development leader in Alaska. The keynote speaker was a globally recognized MIT materials scientist. CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Elms College`s Center for Equity in Urban Education celebrated its fifth anniversary Wednesday evening. The center's goal has been to increase the diversity of qualified educators and school leaders through culturally responsive practices. The theme was 'Harambee: Cultivating an Equitable and Just Educational Future,' highlighting the center's achievement and ongoing commitment to foster equity in education. Dr. Joyce Hampton, the VP of Academic Affairs, told 22News, 'We have been able to expand the number of BIPOC graduates within education as a result of this work.' 'We are being the educational, transformational force for western Massachusetts when it comes to diversifying the teaching workforce,' adds Exec. Director of the center, Dr. Tyra Good. The celebration included a performance by Libertas Academy Charter School's big red drumline, and the keynote speaker was Timothy Jones, founder and president of 'Techniques-4-Learning, LLC.' Elms College hosts lecture on Anti-Asian racism

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Elms College hosted a lecture Monday evening to highlight racism against the Asian community. This lecture is part of the college's annual 'Reverend Hugh C. Crean distinguished lecture in catholic thought,' which is now in its 6th year. Father Joseph Cheah —a professor from the University of Saint Joseph was the featured speaker. In his lecture, he explored the catholic church's understanding of racial justice through the lens of AAPL experiences. 'You don't have to be catholic to respect dignity —you don't have to be catholic to understand what solidarity is about,' he says. 'Working together and trying to come up with a solution to a common problem.' Bishop Byrne of the Springfield diocese was also in attendance and according to the organization 'Stop AAPL Hate' they report that anti-Asian threats continue to increase in the U.S. as of December 2024. Elms College professor receives Celtics ‘Hero Among Us' award

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Elms College Dean of Student Success and Professor of Education was honored with the 'Heroes Among Us' award from the Boston Celtics for her dedicated work supporting cystic fibrosis patients. Elizabeth 'Betty' Hukowicz was granted the award last Thursday, along with other recipients who have made a difference serving their local community. Meghan's Light Walk takes place at East Mountain Club in Westfield Hukowicz is the founder of Meghan's Light, an organization named after her daughter who had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) and ultimately passed away from the disease. Hukowicz used her experience to help others so they wouldn't face these challenges alone. Meghan's Light has now raised over $500,000 for CF research, and has granted wishes to hundreds of patients with CF. Hucowicz's commitment and advocacy have made her stand out amongst all who know her. Elms College faculty and staff said that Hucowicz is an integral part of the school, with a passion for education that reflects the college's core values of faith, community, and justice. Feb. 8—Goodson graduates from Elms College CHICOPEE, Mass. — Mary Goodson, of South Point, received a Master of Science in Nursing from Elms College following the conclusion of the Fall 2024 semester. Goodson was among 79 students who received their degrees in December. Elms College is a co-educational Catholic college offering a liberal arts curriculum that prepares students holistically for a purposeful life in a diverse and interconnected world. Founded in 1928 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Elms College has a tradition of educating reflective, principled and creative learners, who are rooted in faith, educated in mind, compassionate in heart, responsive to civic and social obligations, and capable of adjusting to change without compromising principle. Newcome named to fall Deans' List at Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. — Anna Newcome, of Ironton, has been named to the Deans' List at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the fall semester of the 2024-25 academic year. Newcome, a junior majoring in environmental science and plant biology, was named to the Dean's List for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Qualification for the Deans' List varies among the eight undergraduate colleges and the Explore Center. All qualifying grade-point averages are based on a four-point scale and a minimum number of graded semester hours.
