Japan and China deny supplying combat drones

Japan and China have both denied that they provided combat drones for use in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The Embassy of Japan in Cambodia and the Embassy of China in Thailand issued denials via their Facebook pages on Wednesday, rejecting rumours alleging support for those on either side of the clash. The former posted statements in Khmer and English. 'The Government of Japan has never planned to provide such equipment to Thailand, nor has it received such a request from Thailand,' the embassy said. 'Japan's assistance is strictly limited to areas not directly related to international conflict. We would appreciate it if you would not spread the fake news,' it said. 'The Government of Japan places the utmost importance on the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand and the early restoration of peace. We sincerely hope the people of Cambodia can go back to peaceful daily life as soon as possible.' The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok issued a statement in English denying claims Beijing had donated drones to support Cambodia's border operations. 'The claim is false,' the embassy's statement said. 'The pictures used by the said reports were taken during a flight demonstration event held by China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation in Cambodia in January 2024, which has no connection to the current situation,' it said. China also expressed its readiness to maintain close communication with countries in the region, including Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia, and pledged to play a constructive role in supporting ceasefire efforts and restoring peace and stability as swiftly as possible. Earlier, Thailand's Ministry of Defence said most of the drones sighted carrying out surveillance work along the border in recent days originated from Cambodia. Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit said on Monday that authorities have documented all of the incursions, complete with photographic evidence and coordinates. While most of the drones seen along the border came from Cambodia, Gen Nattaphon said a drone sighted in Surin on Sunday evening originated from within Thailand.

Besides, the two nations are also economic getaways for Indians looking for quick honeymoons or even trips with their friends and family. In 2024, Indians emerged as the third largest group to travel to Thailand. About 2.12 million Indian tourists visited Thailand last year, according to data shared by the Embassy of India in Bangkok. Only more Chinese and Malaysian nationals travelled to Thailand, the data showed. With just around 0.13 million Thai tourists travelling to India, the number was abysmally low in comparison. As far as Cambodia is concerned, 77,632 Indians travelled to the country in 2024, an increase of 12.8% over 2023, according to a report in The Phnom Penh Post. Of these, 58,743 were tourists, while the remainder were business travellers, it added. The two countries are also connected by direct flights between Phnom Penh and New Delhi and Kolkata and Siem Reap. Thailand-Cambodia Border-dispute A long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated on Thursday, following years of tensions over contested territory. The situation turned violent after Thailand claimed that Cambodia fired long-range rockets at civilian places, including a petrol pump, killing at least six people. In retaliation, Thailand sent an F-16 fighter jet to target a Buddhist Pagoda, killing one civilian, according to Al Jazeera. Thailand's health ministry has reported 15 deaths, including 14 civilians and 1 soldier, while Cambodia has reported 32 fatalities so far. The UN court settled the issue in 2013, but after a Cambodian soldier was murdered in a fresh conflict in May, the matter escalated again. Thailand also expelled Cambodia's ambassador and recalled its envoy.

India to resume issuance of tourist visas to Chinese after 5-year hiatus

India said it will issue tourist visas to Chinese citizens from July 24, five years after it suspended the process, as the neighbouring nations seek to improve people-to-people ties amid decreasing border tensions. Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa to India by filling out an online application, scheduling an appointment and personally submitting their passport and other required documents to the Indian Visa Application Centres in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the Embassy of India in China said in a statement Wednesday. Sources indicated that a vigil will be maintained so that the tourist visas are not misused. India had suspended all tourist visas in early 2020 in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19. While New Delhi lifted restrictions on tourists from other countries as concerns over the pandemic eased, it did not resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals as bilateral relations soured after the 2020 clashes in Ladakh's Galwan valley. The move now to resume the process comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit early September. It also comes ahead of a plan to restart direct flights between the two countries. This is a positive move. Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial. China will maintain communication & consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries." Earlier this month, external affairs minister S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing and raised the issue of restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation in the backdrop of restrictions on rare earth magnet supplies to India. He also brought up the issue of faster de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh and the two sides agreed to take additional practical steps, including travel to each other's country and direct flight connectivity. Earlier this year, India and China explored ways to rebuild ties and agreed to initiate efforts to promote people-to-people exchanges, including resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra this year.
