TikTok star Khaby Lame returns to social media after self-deporting for violating immigration rules

Khaby Lame has reemerged online after being kicked out of United States under President Donald Trump 's newly intensified deportation drive. In his latest Instagram Stories, Lame appeared calm and composed, strolling down a leafy street in Italy. Another frame showed him smiling alongside Brazilian soccer star Emerson Royal, who plays for AC Milan and the Brazilian national team. The images follow days of uproar after Lame, born in Senegal but raised in Chivasso, Italy, was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Las Vegas 's Harry Reid International Airport on June 6. ICE claims he overstayed his visa after entering the country on April 30. He was granted 'voluntary departure', a bureaucratic euphemism for being kicked out. 'Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, was detained… for immigration violations,' ICE confirmed in a statement. 'Lame was granted voluntary departure… and has since departed the US.' Since reclaiming the presidency in January, Donald Trump has made good on campaign vows to execute mass deportations and resurrect the muscular ICE machine that defined his first term. His crackdown has swept up thousands, from undocumented workers to high-profile public figures, and even it now appears, the most-watched man on TikTok. The move drew backlash from civil liberties groups and social media users alike, many of whom questioned why a beloved Italian citizen with 162.2 million TikTok followers and brand deals with the likes of Doritos, Boss, and Binance would be treated like a national security threat. The deportation was first revealed by conservative influencer Bo Loudon, who claimed to have reported Lame and posted what he said was a screenshot from ICE's website indicating that the TikToker was being held at Henderson Detention Center in Nevada near Las Vegas. Last month, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker - better known as HasanAbi - claimed he was detained at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and interrogated by ICE agents about his political views on Trump and Hamas. His 40-minute video describing the ordeal has since racked up millions of views. In Lame's case, the optics could not have been worse. Last month he attended the prestigious Met Gala in New York, rubbing shoulders with Rihanna, Diana Ross, and fashion elite. He wore a bespoke gray zoot suit that landed him on multiple best-dressed lists. Born in Senegal and raised in public housing near Turin, Lame became famous during the pandemic after losing his job as a factory worker. Conservative influencer Bo Loudon claimed to have reported Lame's detention on June 6 and posted an alleged screenshot from the ICE website stating he was at Henderson Detention Center in Nevada (Lame's name does no longer appears in the ICE detainee database) He began posting wordless TikTok reactions that mocked the absurdity of overcomplicated 'life hack' videos offering instead a simple solution and a signature shrug. By 2022, he had surpassed Charli D'Amelio as the most-followed person on TikTok. Brands came calling with UNICEF naming him as a goodwill ambassador. He walked the runway at Milan Fashion Week and built his empire on facial expressions rather than flashy speeches. In 2022, Italy formally granted Lame citizenship after a national outcry over the delay. He celebrated the moment as a victory for immigrants like himself who grow up Italian but are often excluded by bureaucracy 'Public housing is a place to which I owe everything,' he once told an interviewer.

GdS: ‘No place for him in this Milan' – summer signing faced with almost certain exit

GdS: 'No place for him in this Milan' – summer signing faced with almost certain exit GdS: 'No place for him in this Milan' – summer signing faced with almost certain exit Emerson Royal only signed for AC Milan last summer, but a journalist has claimed that his career with the club is already 'over'. The full-back arrived on a permanent deal from Spurs as part of the most recent summer mercato, but just a few months after his arrival there was already talk of him departing after a number of sub-par performances. Advertisement The sliding doors moment was the game against Girona in the Champions League back in January, one which could have been his last match with the Rossoneri. His transfer to Galatasaray seemed a done deal, but then a serious calf injury put the deal on hold. He is now closing in on returning, but Luca Bianchin – in a video published on the La Gazzetta dello Sport website – spoke about his future, which seems almost certain to be away from Milan. 'Where has Emerson Royal gone? He got hurt two months ago on one of those days that change your life. He seemed ready to move to Galatasaray, but that day he hurt his calf and so he moved to the infirmary,' he said (via Radio Rossonera). 'In these weeks he has divided his time between Italy and Brazil where he has worked on his recovery. For him, his career at Milan is over, and let's put it this way: it was short but intense. Advertisement 'For 5 months he was a bit of everything, a starter on the pitch and a character on social media, where some appreciated him, and some held him responsible for everything, from the 1v1 against Tavares on the wing to global warming. 'There is no place for him in this Milan. It is difficult for someone to buy him, much more likely that someone will arrive with a loan bid, in Brazil or Turkey.'

Emerson Royal working towards full Milan recovery

Emerson Royal working towards full Milan recovery Emerson Royal has resumed running in training and is working his way towards a return to the Milan squad. The 26-year-old has been out of action since suffering a calf strain during the Champions League tie against Girona in late January. According to MilanNews, the Brazilian has today started running in the sand pit again for the first time since his injury. It is still only a stepping stone to full recovery, as the sand is less harsh on the muscles than running on grass, so his return to the pitch is still a few weeks away. Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal has made 26 competitive appearances for the Rossoneri so far this season. He is widely expected to be sold this summer, having been replaced by Kyle Walker in January.

Row Z: Neymar makes friends for life, Adkins turns to Abraham Lincoln and Duran's dreams

Welcome to Row Z, our weekly column on The Athletic shining a light on the bonkers side of the game. From clubs to managers, players to organisations, every Friday we'll bring you the absurdities, the greed, the contradictions, the preposterousness and the oddities of the game we all love… 'I've been wishing for this moment to come true for a long time,' Neymar said as he rejoined former club Santos in Brazil this week. He can't have been wishing too hard. For the last 18 months, while the Brazilian has been dreaming of a return to his homeland, he's been busy becoming surely the most expensive transfer flop in the history of football. Advertisement It's not Neymar's fault that Saudi Arabia/Al Hilal chose to pay him unfathomable amounts of money, but sheesh, the numbers are quite something. Al Hilal paid Paris Saint-Germain around £78million ($96.9m) to buy Neymar and paid him a reported annual salary of £83m, plus the mansion and fleet of cars that were thrown in with the deal. During those 18 months, Neymar failed to score a single domestic goal, with his solitary strike from seven appearances coming in the AFC Champions League. 'To everyone at Al Hilal, to the fans, thank you,' he said with a straight face on social media, with comments on the post restricted. 'I gave everything to play and I wish we enjoyed better times on the pitch together. I now know the real Saudi and have friends for life.' Well yes, 161m friends. Emerson Royal replied with three fire emojis, Patrice Evra added a heart, Puma posted three blue hearts. It was emotional stuff. Neymar then added in a video farewell: 'Unfortunately it didn't come as I imagined, I wish I had played many more games and scored a lot of goals and made the fans happy, but it's god willing.' If in doubt, blame religion. Still, the Saudis know what they're doing when it comes to value for money. Al Nassr are set to pay £64m for Aston Villa's backup striker as they look to sign dedicated team player Jhon Duran. It's a dream move for Duran to pull on the yellow and blue of Al Nassr. Just like it was going to be a dream move if he signed for West Ham United in the summer (remember him posting the West Ham 'hammers' symbol on Instagram?), or a move to Bayern Munich would have been ideal, too (he called them 'the club of my dreams' after scoring against them in the Champions League). To be fair, for a player who comes across as a little egotistical and temperamental, he'll fit right in alongside Cristiano Ronaldo up front. What were your highlights of Steven Gerrard's Al Ettifaq reign? How about the big 3-0 win at Damac a few weeks ago? Or maybe the dramatic last minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Al Taawoun in September? Great days. Gerrard leaves the club in 12th place in an 18-team league, five points above the relegation zone. He also left his previous club, Aston Villa, just above the relegation zone in October 2022. Advertisement 'Football is unpredictable and sometimes things don't go the way we want,' Gerrard said this week. Well, it's kind of unpredictable, although there is a bit of predictably growing about what Gerrard does with football teams. Anyway, rest assured he'll be given a chance at a decent Premier League club before 2025 is out. Until then? There's a seat on The Overlap with Gerrard's name written all over it. Tranmere Rovers host Colchester United in League Two this weekend desperately needing a win to drag themselves clear of the drop zone. Rovers are 22nd and struggling. Manager Nigel Adkins knows it's a big game and this week talked up the importance of the club being united and singing from the same hymn sheet. What kind of managerial cliches did he use during his pre-match media duties? 'We've got to stick together'? 'We need to roll our sleeves up and fight for three points'? Not exactly. 'Great phrase,' he started. 'Obviously the American president has just come in… new American president, we haven't got a clue what's going to go on in the world. 'A house divided against itself cannot stand. It's a famous quote by who? Five, four, three, two, one. There was your thought process; 16th of June 1858, Abraham Lincoln, famously gave a quote. 'It's a great little phrase. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Now we have to be together and everybody has got to bring the best of them, every waking moment of the day, for Tranmere Rovers Football Club.' The interviewer was clearly fully engaged and ready for a deep philosophical discussion about famous 19th century quotations. His follow-up question? 'Team news-wise, what are we looking at?' "Quick! Put it out with these files from accounts!" — BDS 🇵🇸 (@JailTheEnglish) January 29, 2025 And finally this week, if you thought Michael Oliver made a controversial decision last weekend, he's got nothing on the referee for Watford Women v Lewes. Here's a straight red card for not taking a corner. ????????????????? — Joe Felforit (@KhatruSiberiano) January 28, 2025 Here's a straight red for kicking the ball away after play hadn't been stopped for an injured player. And then a yellow for diving… And this! — Joe Felforit (@KhatruSiberiano) January 28, 2025 Both reds were given for dissent. 'I feel like the game was probably spoiled by some officiating decisions,' manager Renee Hector said in the understatement of the week.

Inter's title chase faces test as Milan eye third straight derby win

Summary Milan eye three wins in a row against Inter Motta under pressure as Juve face Empoli Napoli bid for eighth straight league win Jan 30 (Reuters) - AC Milan have the chance to throw a spanner in the works of Inter Milan's title charge when they host their city rivals on Sunday in a match that could shape the Serie A season. The title race is shaping up to be a two-horse battle between Inter and Napoli, with both in impressive form, but Milan have the opportunity to shift the dial. Milan sit seventh with 34 points, while second-placed Inter are on 50, three behind leaders Napoli with a game in hand. A victory in the 'Derby della Madonnina' could not only disrupt Inter's title push but also reignite Milan's league campaign after a disappointing season so far. Milan have recent history on their side, having already beaten Inter twice this season - once in the league in September and again in the Italian Super Cup final earlier this month. A third straight victory would give Milan more than just city bragging rights; it would mark the first time since 2011 they have secured three consecutive wins over their rivals. Both sides face injury concerns, with Emerson Royal sidelined for Milan due to a calf issue. However, new signing Kyle Walker could be in line to make his Milan debut after joining on loan from Manchester City. Inter could be boosted by the returns of Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Acerbi, who are nearing full fitness after injury, according to Italian media reports. MOTTA UNDER PRESSURE Juventus host Empoli on Sunday in a match that manager Thiago Motta hopes will mark the beginning of a turnaround. It's been a season full of twists and turns for his side, who were unbeaten in the league until a narrow 2-1 loss to Napoli on Saturday, but struggled with a string of draws. After Wednesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat at home to Benfica, the pressure is mounting on Motta to steer the team back on track against 14th placed Empoli. Juve have suffered four defeats across all competitions this season: two in the Champions League, one in Serie A, and one in the Italian Super Cup. They sit fifth in the Serie A table, two points behind fourth-placed Lazio. Adding to Motta's woes, defender Pierre Kalulu picked up a thigh injury in the loss to Benfica and will miss Sunday's match. With Gleison Bremer, Andrea Cambiaso, and Juan Cabal already sidelined, Juve's defensive line looks increasingly fragile. Antonio Conte's Napoli travel to AS Roma on Sunday having secured seven consecutive league wins. Roma are unbeaten in their last six league matches having bounced back after a shaky start under Claudio Ranieri, who was appointed in November as the club's third manager this season. Napoli will be the fresher of the two sides, having not played since last weekend's clash with Juve, while Ranieri's team face a decisive Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday. The league leaders are also relatively injury-free, with Mathias Olivera their only player still sidelined and set to return in about a month. Third-placed Atalanta host Torino on Saturday, after a challenging run that has seen them win just once in their last five league matches to fall seven points behind Napoli.
