Bayer Leverkusen vs. Borussia Dortmund preview: Top four-chasing Dortmund look for huge win
The hosts staged a late comeback in their 2-2 draw with Freiburg on May 3, scoring twice after the 82nd minute despite generating just 0.29 xG throughout the match. Although Leverkusen have managed three clean sheets in their last five outings, their attacking efficiency has waned, with only six goals scored in that time, compared to eight in their previous three fixtures. The build-up to this clash has been overshadowed by confirmation that manager Xabi Alonso will leave the club at the end of the campaign, with strong speculation linking him to a summer move to Real Madrid. Leverkusen edged Dortmund 3-2 in their January league meeting, but that remains their only victory against the visitors in their last five meetings, with two defeats suffered in that stretch. While Die Werkself are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions, they've also been held to three draws in that span. At BayArena, Alonso's men have been inconsistent, winning two and drawing one of their last three, but had previously gone three home games without a win, suffering two losses and a draw. Team News Leverkusen will be without defenders Jeanuel Belocian, Mario Hermoso, and Nordi Mukiele due to injury. Still, regulars Edmond Tapsoba, Jonathan Tah, and Piero Hincapie are fit and expected to anchor the backline. Granit Xhaka remains a central figure in midfield and should start alongside Aleix Garcia, while Florian Wirtz is set to lead the attack alongside Emiliano Buendia and Patrik Schick. Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, arrive in Leverkusen fresh from a commanding 4-0 win over Wolfsburg, in which they created four big chances and racked up nearly 2.5 xG. Manager Niko Kovac will be pleased with his team's recent attacking form, having scored 12 goals in their last four matches, though their defence remains a concern, with five goals conceded during that same stretch. Dortmund currently sit in the Europa League spot, one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg and still within reach of the final Champions League berth with two games remaining. BVB head into Sunday's clash riding a wave of momentum, having won four consecutive matches in all competitions and five of their last six in the Bundesliga. However, their away form has been erratic, with two wins, one draw, and two losses in their past five road trips, suggesting vulnerability when not at Signal Iduna Park. Team News Dortmund have relatively few injury concerns, with only centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck ruled out until October and attacker Maximilian Beier sidelined until the end of May. Kovac may stick with his favoured back three of Niklas Süle, Waldemar Anton, and Ramy Bensebaini. Up front, Serhou Guirassy, who has scored 32 goals across all competitions, will spearhead the attack, with creative support expected from Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi.

Buendia's late goal gives subdued Leverkusen a win in its Bundesliga title chase
HEIDENHEIM, Germany — Emiliano Buendia's stoppage-time winner against Heidenheim boosted Bayer Leverkusen's faint hopes of defending the Bundesliga title on Saturday. Four days after a shock German Cup semifinal loss to third-division Arminia Bielefeld, Leverkusen created few meaningful chances until substitute Buendia curled a shot from outside the penalty area in off the post in the 1-0 win.

Last-gasp Buendia goal keeps Leverkusen's Bundesliga title hopes alive
Emiliano Buendia (2nd L) scored a 91st-minute winner for Bayer Leverkusen at Heidenheim (THOMAS KIENZLE) Emiliano Buendia snatched a stoppage-time winner to take Bayer Leverkusen to a 1-0 win at Heidenheim on Saturday, keeping their slim hopes of defending their league title alive. Eliminated from the German Cup by third-division Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday, Leverkusen needed a win to stay six points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who won 3-1 at Augsburg on Friday. Advertisement Xabi Alonso's side looked out of ideas in attack against the relegation candidates without the creative spark of injured midfielder Florian Wirtz. However, as they have done so often under the Spaniard, Leverkusen scored in injury time to grab all three points, Buendia curling home from outside the box on 91 minutes. The goal was Buendia's first since arriving on loan from Aston Villa and may prove crucial to Leverkusen's hopes of catching up with an injury-ravaged Bayern side. Elsewhere, goals from Karim Adeyemi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Serhou Guirassy and Jamie Gittens took Borussia Dortmund to a dominant 4-1 win at Freiburg, days out from their Champions League trip to Barcelona. Advertisement Adeyemi dribbled left and unleashed an unstoppable rocket to blast Dortmund in front from an acute angle with 34 minutes gone. Six minutes into the second half, Adeyemi found Chukwuemeka on the break in acres of space. The England junior representative's shot was deflected into the goal by the Freiburg defence for Chukwuemeka's first goal since joining Dortmund from Chelsea on loan in winter. Guirassy came off the bench and sealed the result with a 68th-minute tap-in, his 25th goal for Dortmund in all competitions this season. Substitute Gittens put the icing on the cake with a pinpoint header with 78 minutes gone, before Maximilian Eggestein grabbed a late consolation for the hosts. Advertisement The win moved Dortmund to eighth, one spot behind Freiburg and five points behind fourth-placed Mainz, who drew 1-1 at home with lowly Holstein Kiel. Kiel, promoted to the top division for the first time this season, took the lead thanks to a fine first-half strike from Alexander Bernhardsson, but Nelson Weiper drew Mainz level with 15 minutes remaining. RB Leipzig won their first match since dismissing coach Marco Rose, coming from behind to beat a 10-man Hoffenheim at home 3-1 thanks to goals from Benjamin Sesko, Ridle Baku and Yussuf Poulsen. Hoffenheim took the lead thanks to a swerving strike from the Bayern-bound Tom Bischof 11 minutes in, but lost Leo Ostigard to a last-man foul with 28 minutes played. Advertisement Leipzig jumped up to fifth with the win, a point behind fourth, while Hoffenheim are five points clear of Heidenheim in the relegation playoff spot. Stuttgart kept within sight of the European placings with a dominant 4-0 win at Bochum. Days after booking a spot in the German Cup final with a win over RB Leipzig, Stuttgart's victory was their first in the league since early February, after a six-game winless run. An Ermedin Demirovic hat-trick and a goal from defender Jeff Chabot took Stuttgart to ninth, six points behind the Champions League spots. Later on Saturday, Werder Bremen host Eintracht Frankfurt. dwi/nf
