Swimming couple Matt and Emily Richards aim for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Britain's Matthew Richards in the 100m freestyle heats at the World Aquatics Championships at the WCH Arena on July 30, 2025. SINGAPORE – As teammates on Britain's swimming team, married couple Matt and Emily Richards spend most of their waking hours training, competing and living together. The pair have travelled the world in pursuit of medals and personal bests, but one goal remains unchecked on their to-do list: competing at the Olympics together. While Matt has been to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paris 2024 – winning three medals across both editions – Emily has yet to reach sport's grandest stage. Describing it as an ultimate dream, Matt, 22, told The Straits Times on July 30: 'There's no reason why we couldn't. We've been on multiple world championships and European championships teams together. To go to pretty much every event around the world together, is a pretty cool thing to be able to do. 'Olympics is just that last one that we want to tick off together.' Emily, 24, added: 'I'm still trying to make my first (Olympics) but Los Angeles 2028 is on the cards, and that's what we're both setting our dreams for.' Emily, who hails from Newcastle and Matt, who is from Worcestershire, are part of a 28-strong British swimming team that is in Singapore for the ongoing World Aquatics Championships. Love blossomed almost immediately and within a few months, they started living together. Last August, they tied the knot in front of family, friends and fellow athletes at an estate in rural Herefordshire. For Matthew, the wedding was a perfect finale to a memorable summer. Before tying the knot, he won his second Olympic gold medal in Paris as part of the 4×200m freestyle relay team and his first individual Olympic medal, a silver in the 200m freestyle. British swimmers Emily Large and Matthew Richards on their wedding day last August. PHOTO: Emily Large/Instagram The freestyle specialist, who was just 18 when he won his first relay gold in Tokyo and won the 200m free world title in 2023, said that having a partner who is also a competitive swimmer means that they both understand the trials and tribulations of elite sport. He said: 'We've been on this journey together from the get go. Supporting each other has always been a really important thing. Because obviously we've been training together and racing together now for five years so we know where each other are mentally and how to help each other. 'But when we're away from the pool, we do a good job of just switching off and being able to step back and not think too much about the sport itself.' Outside of the pool, they like to hunt for the best coffee places and restaurants. While some might not enjoy spending all their time with their spouse, Emily believes it has strengthened their relationship. She added: 'We literally spend 24/7 around each other. The setbacks and the even successes, we both go through them together and we know how to support each other through them. We do talk about swimming, but we also talk about other things, and it's just so nice to be able to go through life together and be able to travel the world, see new cultures and people.' However, they draw the line at giving swimming tips to each other, as butterfly specialist Emily notes that 'we leave that to the coaches'. Matthew has had a mixed start in Singapore, but is still in the hunt for medals. On July 27, he was part of 4x100m freestyle quartet who placed fourth in a new British record time of 3:10.73. But a day later, the 200m free defending champion failed to qualify for the final after placing 12th in the semi-finals. On July 30, he will compete in the 100m free semi-finals, while Emily will feature in the 200m butterfly semi-finals. Regardless of the results, Singapore has already found a place in Emily's heart, just as Matthew did a few years ago. A return visit is on the cards after the championships. She said: 'I love the city. I had never been to Singapore before. It's a lovely city with great people and very clean.'

Emily Blunt channels her inner Madonna in first look from Devil Wears Prada 2 — and she's a redhead!
Emily Blunt is back! Emily Blunt returns to the Devil Wears Prada world for sequel — and the red hair is GIVING!(Photos: X, Instagram) And how! When a proper big banner sequel for 2006 cult classic The Devil Wears Prada was confirmed back in May, we could have bet our bottom dollar on the fact that Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly were going to steal the show. The film kicked into production earlier this month and while everyone believed the scale and 2-decade long wait for the film were sign enough of the proceedings (especially the looks) being guarded to doesn't seem to be a case at all. The marketing team seems to be on an overdrive of delivering instant gratification to the public, a new drop making its way to the internet every single day. It started with Andy, debuting her business casz style with a touch of Gen Z, footage of her running around New York still as flustered as the first film, giving us an IRL vibe check. Then came Miranda in her layered bob, sleek trench and intimidating 1000-yard stare. An absolute win, no notes. Shortly after, Stanley Tucci's Nigel was spotted dressed dapper, as he always did, really upping the knob on nostalgia. But, Emily seems to have taken the cake, baker and the whole bakery. A crisp Dior shirt with a pinstriped Jean Paul Gaultier power suit cinched in with a Wiederhoeft bustier, and a sleep sour red long bob. That's it. That's the look. And we fear it ate — not just in general, but the others' too. Emily Blunt is THAT girl as she returns to The Devil Wears Prada universe(Photos: X) Now coming to the plot, what's going on? There's a shot of Miranda and Emily entering separate cars that has really got the internet guessing. While there are clips of Andy running around after Miranda, pretty much like the first film, it seems like Emily isn't Miranda's errand girl anymore. As a matter of fact, this shot is giving nemesis energy. Take a look. Are Miranda and Emily at odds in The Devil Wears Prada sequel?(Photo: X) Besides the OGs reprising their roles, The Devil Wears Prada sequel has also cast Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak and Pauline Chalamet in undisclosed roles. Kenneth Branagh has been cast as Miranda's husband with Patrick Bremmall being brought in to play Andy's boyfriend. The film is eyeing a May Day release next year.

Woody Allen, 89, and wife Soon-Yi, 54, in rare sighting as they grab dinner in Santa Monica
Woody Allen held hands with his third wife Soon-Yi Previn as the enjoyed a date night at Italian restaurant Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica on Saturday. At 89, the disgraced director is 35 years older than the special education expert, who was adopted from Korea by his longtime ex-partner Mia Farrow and her second ex-husband Andre Previn in 1978. Woody and Soon-Yi have been married for 27 years, and they're proud parents of adopted daughters Bechet Allen and Manzie Tio Allen. Bechet, 26, works as an assistant to Gagosian Gallery curator Michael Cary, and 25-year-old Manzie works as an assistant to Emily in Paris showrunner Darren Star. Between 2014-2015, Allen and Previn reportedly used to enjoy monthly dinners with the late Jeffrey Epstein, whose name is still dominating headlines over the Trump administration's refusal to reveal his list of clients. 'Woody and Soon-Yi lived in the same neighborhood as Epstein and were frequently invited to dinner parties at his townhouse,' a spokeswoman for the couple confirmed to the Wall Street Journal in 2023. 'There were always other guests at those gatherings. Woody never had a business meeting with Epstein and not once spent time with him without Soon-Yi also being present.' Chelsea Handler happened to be a guest at one of those dinners with Woody, Soon-Yi, and the convicted pedophile at his Upper East Side townhouse where she famously asked the couple: 'So how did you two meet?' 'There's no chance that I, as myself, am going to sit across from the table from him and his daughter wife and not tell him what I think... just on behalf of women everywhere. I will never be silent,' the 50-year-old comedian recalled on Mike Birbiglia's Working It Out podcast on July 14. 'I was there to make sure he knew and everyone at the table knew how I felt before I left. Like, "Don't think I'm okay. I'm not okay with this."' Previn never considered Allen a father figure despite the 80-year-old Rosemary's Baby alum dating him for 12 years spanning 1980-1992 until Mia discovered nude Polaroids of her then 21-year-old daughter at his home. Seven months later, Farrow publicly accused the Bronx-born filmmaker of molesting her seven-year-old adopted daughter Dylan Farrow. Woody - who was never charged or prosecuted - quickly sued the Roommate thespian for full custody of their son Satchel (now Ronan) and her adopted children Dylan and Moses.

Asthma Society urges action in Budget to address affordability of medication
A quarter of asthma patients have skipped essential medication due to financial pressure in the last three months, according to the Asthma Society of Ireland. Ireland has one of the highest asthma rates globally, with 450,000 people affected — the fourth highest per capita rate in the world. Asthma imposes a heavy financial burden, with some medications costing up to €80 a month, and mortality and hospitalisation rates remain significantly higher than EU averages, with half of those with asthma showing signs of poor asthma control. New survey data from the organisation shows that 24 per cent of respondents reported going without asthma medication at least once in the past three months because they couldn't afford it. The Asthma Society is now urging the government to take decisive action in Budget 2026 to address the affordability crisis impacting people with asthma. Further data shows more than half (56 per cent) experienced difficulties making ends meet, with a quarter of respondents (25 per cent) going into arrears on mortgage or rental payments, utility bills, hire purchase or other loan payments at least once over the previous 12 months. Launching its Pre-Budget Submission 2026, Backing Every Breath, Building Better Care, the Asthma Society of Ireland is seeking urgent investment in three priority areas — affordable medication, expanded asthma care services and staffing, and targeted home energy upgrades to improve indoor air quality for people with asthma. 'The survey finding that so many people with asthma are having it difficult to make ends meet is, unfortunately, a surprise to no one in the asthma community,' said Eilís Ní Chaithnía, CEO of the Asthma Society of Ireland. 'Asthma imposes a heavy financial burden, with some medications costing up to €80 a month. 'With a combination of targeted investment and taxation measures, we can bring asthma under control, reduce exacerbations, hospitalisations and preventable deaths, and improve quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people in Ireland. But it will also require political will. 'An overwhelming majority (96 per cent) of those who responded to our survey said that they want the Government to take action in the upcoming Budget to reduce the financial burden of asthma on households. 'Simply put, they need this Government to make sure that they can take their asthma medications as prescribed, access specialist and diagnostic care when they need it, and live in homes that don't make them sick,' Ms Ní Chaithnía continued. Case Study Emily Smyth, 33, was diagnosed with severe asthma in her early 20s. Originally from Ballsbridge in Dublin, Emily experienced an episode of acute shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. A GP confirmed it was an asthma attack and referred her to a respiratory consultant. 'Today I am on biologic therapy, two daily inhalers and regular antibiotics,' Emily said. She believes that patients have enough to cope with, without adding the unnecessary worry of not being able to afford medication: 'Managing asthma can be difficult and it can impact your life in so many ways,' said Emily. 'Medications enable us to manage symptoms and to live our lives. That's why it's so vital that the cost of treatment be addressed. 'Over 60 per cent of people in the Asthma Society's survey supported universal subsidisation of asthma medications, something I completely agree with," Emily said. 'As a healthcare professional myself, I'm also passionate about the need for specialist care for asthma. 'I'm extremely lucky to be under the wing of a severe asthma clinic team and the care that I have received has been truly incredible and has transformed my asthma management. An inhaler used for treating asthma (stock image) (Image: PA) 'Knowing that you have a team supporting you, who will ensure that you get the highest standard of care and specialist education is so important. 'However, access should not depend on where you live or be a 'postcode lottery'. 'Expanding specialist and diagnostic care would significantly improve the lives of people with asthma,' said Emily. Key Budget Asks The submission includes detailed costings and proposals to: Phase in subsidisation of asthma medication, prioritising combination and preventer inhalers (€14 million in Budget 2026). Reduce the Drugs Payment Scheme threshold by €8 and abolish prescription charges for medical card holders (combined cost of €84.5 million). Fund a national Severe Asthma Registry (€500,000), recruit an Advanced Nurse Practitioner to every severe asthma clinic and reopen unfilled posts for Respiratory Physiologists around the country. Expand the Warmer Homes Scheme, to provide free home energy upgrades for people with chronic respiratory conditions at risk of energy poverty (€29.5 million). Invest in primary prevention through smoking cessation programmes (€29.05 million) and targeted vaccination. For more information on the supports and services offered by the Asthma Society of Ireland, visit or call the Asthma Adviceline to speak to an asthma specialist nurse or physio on Freefone 1800 44 54 64 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm). Emily Blunt dyes her brown hair a ravishing red in first sighting on The Devil Wears Prada 2 set
Emily Blunt cut and dyed her brunette locks a ravishing red in her first sighting on the set of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in Manhattan's West Side on Tuesday. The British 42-year-old had a deeper burgundy shade when she originated the role of Emily Charlton, the beleaguered senior assistant of Runway Magazine editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) in the 2006 film. Emily exited the 10 Hudson Yards building wearing a white Dior blouse beneath a black pinstripe corseted top, matching wide-leg trousers, and pumps selected by costume designer Molly Rogers. It marks the second time Rogers replaced her Oscar-nominated mentor Patricia Field on a high-profile project following HBO Max's Sex and the City continuation, And Just Like That. Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna returned to adapt Lauren Weisberger's 2013 novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns set a decade later. In the book, Emily teams up with her former co-worker Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) to create the successful aspirational wedding magazine, The Plunge, which Miranda wants to acquire for her own publishing company.
