Mukesh Kumar bombarded with hate for donning Virat Kohli's No. 18 in England; BCCI pummeled for ‘disrespect'

India fast bowler Mukesh Kumar was shown no mercy on social media after a picture of him wearing Virat Kohli's No. 18 jersey in India A's first unofficial Test match against the England Lions at the St Lawrence Ground, in Canterbury. He was bombarded on the internet with hate messages while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was called out for "disrespecting" Kohli. Kohli retired earlier last month, ending his Test career just weeks before India's five-match tour of England. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar later revealed that the 36-year-old had already made up his mind in April. With Kohli gone, his No. 18 jersey was up for grabs, and Bengal bowler Mukesh, who previously donned the No. 49 jersey, switched his jersey number to 18. While it is yet to be confirmed whether the switch is temporary or permanent, the viral picture of him wearing Kohli's iconic jersey number left fans enraged, who not only attacked him, but also the BCCI, saying that the former India captain "deserves the same respect" as MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar. For the unversed, the Indian board had retired both their jerseys after their retirement. Mukesh failed to make the Indian Test team for the upcoming five-match series against England, but has definitely created an opportunity for a late entry in case of an injury after a promising show in the India A match thus far. The 31-year-old bowler, who has represented India in 26 matches across formats, including three appearances in Test cricket, picked up three wickets in the opening game against the Lions, as he ripped through the middle-order line-up, sparking a mini collapse on Day 3 of the game. He dismissed centurion Max Holden, before getting rid of captain James Rew and Rehan Ahmed in the same spell.

‘This is an examination for him': Saba Karim on Shubman Gill's captaincy in upcoming England Test series

Former India selector Saba Karim said that the upcoming England tour will be an exam for new captain Shubman Gill with his success as a captain hinging on his batting performance. In his Test career, Gill has managed just 1,893 runs in 32 Tests at an average just under 32, with four centuries. 'This is an examination for him. I am sure he's ready and up for it. This is a big opportunity for him as a player. He needs to perform with the bat there, if he is able to do so then automatically his captaincy will also flourish,' Karim told PTI Videos on the sidelines of FIT India: Sunday on Cycle event on Sunday. 'I do expect some good results from this young Indian side. The matches will really competitive and I think they are ready for it,' he added. Gill was appointed the Indian Test captain after veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin called it a day in the longest format. Karim, meanwhile, also singled out Karun Nair for praise after the batter's double century against England Lions on Saturday. 'Karun (Nair) played well, he now has experience. Sai seems to have grown in stature as an all-format cricketer. He is gaining experience now, I am excited to see how this combination does in England,' he said. 'He (Arshdeep) is a very talented seamer, the previous experience in England will help him and the conditions as well team had to look beyond Shami and I think they picked the right guy, excited to see him in action as well,' he said. The two-time World Test Championship (WTC) finalists will kickstart the 2025/27 cycle against England with the five Tests at Headingly, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford and The Oval, with the first match scheduled to begin on June 20. This will be the fourth series in a row between these two teams in England that will feature the two playing five Tests. The last time India toured England in 2021, the hosts ended up drawing the series (2-2) after the final Test match was postponed to 2022.

ENG vs IND tour is exam for Gill, good batting key to good captaincy: Karim

The upcoming England tour will be an exam for new Test leader Shubman Gill and his success as captain may depend on his own batting performance, reckons former India selector Saba Karim. India kick-started a new era in Test cricket with the appointment of Gill as captain following retirements of stalwarts such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession. Gill is a gifted player but he is yet to flourish as a Test batter, managing just 1,893 runs in 32 Tests at an average just under 32, with four centuries. While his technique is compact and batting has flair, he's yet to deliver the kind of consistent, match-winning performances that mark elite Test batters. Yet, Saba Karim remains confident. "This is an examination for him. I am sure he's ready and up for it," Karim told PTI Videos on the sidelines of FIT India: Sunday on Cycle event on Sunday. "This is a big opportunity for him as a player. He needs to perform with the bat there, if he is able to do so then automatically his captaincy will also flourish," said Karim, suggesting that success in one area will boost confidence in the other. The former wicket-keeper batter however, sees the bigger picture. He acknowledged the balance in the current Indian squad, especially the mix of young blood and experienced names. "I do expect some good results from this young Indian side. The matches will really competitive and I think they are ready for it," he added. Karim also praised Karun Nair for his double hundred against England Lions and named Sai Sudharsan as the batter to watch out for alongside Nair in the series. "Karun (Nair) played well, he now has experience. Sai seems to have grown in stature as an all-format cricketer. He is gaining experience now, I am excited to see how this combination does in England." In the bowling department, India will miss seasoned Mohammad Shami, who remains out due to fitness concerns. Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh is part of the squad and is expected to make an impact. "He (Arshdeep) is a very talented seamer, the previous experience in England will help him and the conditions as well team had to look beyond Shami and I think they picked the right guy, excited to see him in action as well," he said. Karim was the chief guest at the 25th edition of the Fit India Sunday cycle event. "Such initiatives are crucial in inspiring people to make fitness a priority and build a stronger, healthier nation. It's great to see widespread community involvement and enthusiasm," he concluded.
