Ramanan: Mature democracy cannot exist without free, fair and fearless journalism

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) is not a mere celebration but a reminder that a mature democracy cannot exist without free, fair and fearless journalism, according to Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. In a Facebook post in conjunction with 2025 Hawana, Ramanan said honour and recognition should be given to the journalists for their daily dedication to reporting with conscience and amplifying the voices of the people with integrity and responsibility. "I speak not only as a government leader but as someone who deeply values the trust and freedom to speak out. "I am sincerely grateful for every news report and coverage, including those involving myself and my programmes, both past and present," he posted. Ramanan, who is also PKR vice-president, acknowledged the media's vital role in providing a platform for him and his colleagues to advance the reform agenda. "Without you, our voices would go unheard, and without you, the people's voices would never resonate. Keep reporting the truth. Never fear speaking out for the sake of justice," he added. Hawana is celebrated annually on May 29, with this year's main event scheduled for June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to launch the event, which is set to gather around 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia and abroad. Now in its fifth edition since its inception in 2018, Hawana is an annual occasion that brings together media professionals to honour their contributions to national development.

Mature Democracy Cannot Exist Without Free, Fair And Fearless Journalism

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) is not a mere celebration, but a reminder that a mature democracy cannot exist without free, fair and fearless journalism, according to Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan slams people who spread false statement using his name

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has slammed irresponsible parties for spreading a defamatory statement using his name. The Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives said the act clearly reflects the desperation of those involved in pursuit of political gain. 'Any official statement will only be issued through my office or via my official social media platforms,' he said in a statement today. Earlier, a statement bearing the name of the Sungai Buloh MP went viral on WhatsApp, titled 'Peletakan Jawatan Rafizi dan Nik Nazmi Bukti Nyata Kesuburan Demokrasi PKR'. Ramanan also advised the public to be cautious of increasingly desperate attempts by certain parties to spread defamatory claims. 'As I emphasised during my winding-up speech at the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) convention last week, the spread of defamatory materials is becoming more rampant, and party members must combat it with firm and decisive action,' he said. Yesterday, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, announced their resignations effective June 17 and July 4 respectively, following their defeats in the 2025 PKR election last week.

Laos prime minister arrives in Malaysia for official visit

SEPANG: Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone arrived in Malaysia today to begin his first official visit ahead of the 46th Asean Summit and Related Meetings in Kuala Lumpur. The aeroplane carrying Siphandone, his wife Vandara Siphandone and his delegation landed at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 9.05am, and they were greeted by Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. Upon arrival, the prime minister inspected a guard of honour mounted by 28 officers and personnel of the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Capt J. Lingesri Rao. Wisma Putra, in a statement, said this is Siphandone's first visit to Malaysia since being elected as the Prime Minister in December 2022. The visit, ahead of the 46th Asean Summit, the second Asean-GCC Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Summit on May 26 and 27 in Malaysia's capital, underscores the strong and enduring ties between Malaysia and Laos. Siphandone will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, followed by a bilateral meeting. Wisma Putra said the meeting will focus on the progress of ongoing bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, defence, education, renewable energy, transportation, tourism, capacity building, agriculture and the halal industry. The two leaders will also engage in a substantive exchange of views on regional and global developments, with an emphasis on the strategic importance of Asean as a cohesive and responsive platform to address shared concerns, particularly in light of emerging geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges. In 2024, total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Laos reached USD21.9 million (RM99.7 million), with Malaysia's exports at USD14.9 million (RM67.8 million) and imports at USD7 million (RM31.9 million). Malaysia is the fifth largest foreign investor in Laos, with total investments worth USD942 million and 46 registered projects, focusing on sectors such as renewable energy, transport and logistics, telecommunications, construction, banking, and hotel services.
