Maldives President visits Petronas Twin Towers
KUALA LUMPUR: Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia, visited the iconic Petronas Twin Towers today. Muizzu and his delegation arrived at 9.30 am and were welcomed by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Petronas' Malaysia Petroleum Management senior vice-president Datuk Bacho Pilong. Muizzu spent over an hour touring the sky bridge and observation deck, which are popular tourist attractions at the towers. Muizzu was briefed by Safful Bahari Din, the manager of Visit Management Services, Petronas Twin Towers, about the architectural history of the world's tallest twin towers. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Muizzu witnessed the exchange of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and two Exchange of Notes (EoN) covering various sectors, aimed at strengthening cooperation in various fields for mutual benefit. Muizzu arrived on Sunday at the invitation of the Prime Minister, marking his first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office as Maldives President in November 2023. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3 per cent to RM862.7 million (USD189 million) from RM827.3 million (USD180.9 million) in 2023, making the archipelagic state Malaysia's sixth largest trading partner among South Asian countries.

Malaysia, Maldives renew expired health cooperation agreement
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the Maldives today renewed a health cooperation agreement that expired in 2023. The MoU renewal on this supports continued collaboration in areas such as resource development, knowledge exchange, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, traditional medicine, health information technology, food safety, and health tourism. It reflects both countries' commitment to high-quality, standards-based healthcare aligned with technological progress. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Maldives Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel signed the renewal of the MoU in a ceremony held at the Perdana Putra building here, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The ceremony was part of Muizzu's four-day official visit to Malaysia, which began yesterday. A second MoU inked includes cooperation in sports, which aims to enhance collaboration based on reciprocity. It includes promoting participation in sporting events, exchanging information through seminars, developing sports facilities, facilitating athlete and coach exchanges, and cooperating in anti-doping, sports medicine and promoting sports for all. Meanwhile, an MoU on Tourism Cooperation outlining a comprehensive framework for collaboration in several key areas of mutual interest marks a significant step in strengthening Malaysia-Maldives ties. These include joint promotion and marketing of tourism destinations, exchange of expertise and capacity-building through training programmes, development of Muslim-friendly tourism offerings, advancement of business events tourism, promotion of ecotourism, and support for community-based tourism initiatives. The signing of this MoU also marks a significant milestone in Malaysia–Maldives relations and reaffirms the shared commitment of both countries to promote sustainable tourism development. Separately, two Exchange on Notes (EoN) touch on the establishment of Bilateral Consultation between Malaysia and Maldives' Foreign Affairs Ministries. These consultations aim to enhance and strengthen cooperation in key areas such as political, economic, and social relations, as well as to facilitate discussions on regional and international issues of mutual concern. The EoN on the Training of Diplomats, which is the establishment of cooperation between Malaysia and the Maldives in the field of diplomatic training, is set to be carried out through Malaysia's Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations and the Maldives' Foreign Service Institute. This initiative aims to strengthen professional development and capacity-building for diplomats from both countries through a framework of mutual understanding, without creating any legally binding obligations.

Malaysia, Maldives to boost ties in floating solar, defence and digital tech, says PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA, April 28 — Malaysia and the Maldives are aiming to expand cooperation into new areas such as floating solar, defence and digital technology, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Noting that both countries are maritime nations, Anwar, who is also finance minister, emphasised that the potential for collaboration is vast and continues to grow across multiple sectors, based on mutual benefit. He said that existing collaborations already cover areas like education, tourism, sports and health. 'There are now new areas where we need to collaborate further, including floating solar, defence and digital technology,' he said during a joint press conference with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia, which began yesterday. This is Muizzu's first visit to Malaysia since becoming president in November 2023, at Anwar's invitation. In education, Anwar said Malaysia's collaboration with the Maldives, which includes the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), is now expanding to include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). '... it is now extending to STEM, TVET and higher education, university exchanges, sports, health. 'As we have seen, (today we) exchange of notes in training diplomats, (and) bilateral consultations,' he said. Anwar also expressed Malaysia's full support for President Muizzu, who has been vocal in urging the international community to prioritise environmental protection. 'We are with him on this, and we follow with great interest and we support the strong expression voiced by the president,' he said. Meanwhile, Anwar expressed his satisfaction with the series of meetings with Muizzu and bilateral discussions with ministers. 'You see, we have a large number of ministers, both from the Maldives and from Malaysia, that shows the importance we place on our friendly neighbour, although quite a bit distant, but a beautiful country,' he said. Malaysia, Maldives ink deals on tourism, sports, health as PM Anwar hosts President Muizzu in Putrajaya
PUTRAJAYA, April 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today witnessed the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and two Exchanges of Notes (EoN), covering various sectors aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two nations in the spirit of mutual benefit. The ceremony, held at the Perdana Putra building here, was part of Muizzu's four-day official visit to Malaysia, which began yesterday. Among the highlights was the signing of MoUs between the Malaysian government and the Maldives in the fields of tourism, sports and health. The two EoNs exchanged between the countries covered areas of diplomatic training and the establishment of bilateral consultation mechanisms between Malaysia and the Republic of Maldives. Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh and Maldives Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel represented their respective countries in exchanging documents in the field of sport. Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad exchanged an MoU on health cooperation with Dr Abdulla Khaleel. In the field of tourism, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan exchanged an MoU with the High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia, Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed. Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin also exchanged an EoN with Mariyam Shabeena. Tomorrow, Muizzu will be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Leadership and Madani Development by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The honorary degree will be conferred by Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, as the Constitutional Head of IIUM. In conjunction with the conferment, Muizzu is scheduled to deliver a public lecture entitled 'The Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Developments of Islamic Civilisation'. Maldives president accorded official welcome at Perdana Putra
PUTRAJAYA: Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who arrived yesterday for a four-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex here today. Muizzu was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the venue at 9 am, after which the national anthems of both countries were played. Muizzu then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 102 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul and Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. Muizzu's maiden visit to Malaysia since becoming president in November 2023 was at the invitation of Anwar. Before proceeding to a meeting with Anwar, Muizzu signed the guest book. Both leaders are expected to review Malaysia-Maldives bilateral relations and explore further collaboration, particularly in trade, investment, the halal industry, education, tourism, and youth and sports. During the visit, Muizzu and Anwar will also witness the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) - Cooperation in the field of Tourism, Cooperation in the field of Sports, and Cooperation in the field of Health - as well as two Exchanges of Notes (EoN) in the areas of Diplomatic Training and the establishment of Bilateral Consultation between Malaysia and the Republic of Maldives.
