St. Brown had initially signed with the Niners on July 22, and after a recent injury to receiver Andy Isabella, Equanimeous St. Brown is back in San Francisco. Equanimeous St. Brown is the brother of Amon Ra St. Brown. Amon Ra has turned himself into a star for the Detroit Lions and is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. Equanimeous has not had the same type of career out of Notre Dame. Equanimeous has played for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and now the Niners. The receiver has just 63 catches for 928 yards and two touchdowns. St. Brown did not appear in an NFL game last season, and in 2023, caught only five passes for 62 yards for the Bears. The 49ers also signed wide receiver Robby Chosen (formerly Anderson) yesterday. Both Chosen and St. Brown have a long shot to make the roster, but they are expected to provide depth and a veteran presence for training camp. The 49ers' offense is going to enter the season banged up. Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from his torn ACL, while Jauan Jennings' injury is concerning. Backup running back Isiah Guerendo is dealing with a tough injury as well, and head coach Kyle Shanahan says that Guerendo will miss a few weeks. When healthy, this group is talented, and they have proved it on the biggest stage. It won't be easy, but the Niners must overcome these injuries and compete in a competitive NFC West division. As of now, the receivers that the 49ers know for certain that will be healthy going into the training camp is Jauan Jennings and Greg Kittle. Ricky Pearsall is currently on the PUP list, but the expectation is for him to be taken off the list sometime early in camp. The 49ers will have to answer a lot of questions on offense this season after not performing to their standard last year. Many are hoping that Christian McCaffrey can stay healthy throughout the season and bounce back. With Deebo Samuel Sr. gone to the Washington Commanders, someone will have to step up in the receiver room to make up for his production. Brock Purdy will also be in the spotlight after signing his max extension this offseason, and some want to see if he can live up to the contract. St. Brown suffered a foot injury during a joint practice with the Denver Broncos on Thursday, prompting the move ahead of Week 1 of the preseason. St. Brown, 28, stands at 6'5″ and weighs 214 pounds. The 49ers signed him on July 22, 2025, released him briefly on July 31, and re-signed him on Tuesday. The 2025 season was set to be his seventh NFL season, having previously played for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints. Over his six-year career, St. Brown has recorded 63 receptions for 928 yards and 2 touchdowns across 62 games, averaging 14.7 yards per catch on 110 targets. Drafted in the sixth round (207th overall) by the Packers in 2018 after a college career at Notre Dame, St. Brown has battled multiple injuries in the past, including a high ankle sprain in 2019 and a hamstring injury in 2023. His consistent availability has been limited, but his size and experience have made him a valued depth receiver. In 2022 with the Bears, he appeared in 16 games, starting all, and totaled 21 receptions for 323 yards and one touchdown. With St. Brown sidelined, the 49ers will rely on an assortment of wideouts entering the preseason, including Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, Russell Gage, Junior Bergen, Terique Owens, Isaiah Hodgins, and Robbie Chosen. Pearsall and Watkins, in particular, are expected to compete for increased roles this season. In a corresponding roster move, San Francisco re-signed quarterback Tanner Mordecai to a one-year deal. Mordecai, 24, originally joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2024, spending the entire 2024 season on the practice squad before being waived earlier this month. A transfer from the University of Oklahoma and SMU, Mordecai completed 850 of 1,281 passes for 9,856 yards and 85 touchdowns during his college career, also rushing for 657 yards and 8 touchdowns. His addition provides the 49ers with another quarterback option behind Mac Jones and Bradley Carter as they approach the preseason opener. 49ers add familiar face at QB after placing WR on injured reserve
The San Francisco 49ers on Friday made a roster move that could signal their plans at quarterback in Saturday's preseason opener vs. the Denver Broncos. San Francisco announced the re-signing of second-year undrafted quarterback Tanner Mordecai. To clear a spot on the 90-man roster they placed wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown on Injured Reserve. The Athletic's Matt Barrows said on Twitter that St. Brown is dealing with a foot issue. Mordecai was one of a handful of players released when the 49ers made some additions to their offseason roster to combat some injury issues at other positions. His return likely means he's on track to suit up Saturday against Denver. Head coach Kyle Shanahan intimated most of the team's starters won't play in the preseason opener, which very likely includes quarterback Brock Purdy. Backup QB Mac Jones may play some, but the club needs him to stay healthy given the inexperience behind him on the depth chart. The only other QB on the roster was Carter Bradley, who was an undrafted rookie last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Bradley signed with San Francisco after throwing in a wide receiver workout early in camp. He'll see a large chunk of playing time, but Mordecai should also see snaps after spending his entire rookie season on the 49ers' practice squad. It wouldn't be a surprise if Jones also sits out with Bradley and Mordecai splitting the QB reps.
