Hundreds of homes up for sale as residents flee coastal town: 'All the destruction'

Residents of one Gulf Coast town are packing up for good while others see opportunity amid a plethora of problems. In Sanibel, Florida, things are getting back to the way they were three years ago. Hurricane Ian in 2022 wiped out a causeway that provided the only access to the island. Homes, businesses, and more were destroyed. Residents, used to living with the threat of hurricanes and weathering tropical storms, were unprepared for the devastating surge of seawater that came with this one. The prospect of rebuilding after the flooding, as well as paying higher insurance rates and property taxes, was too much for some. Over 300 homes are for sale, as WINK News reported, though there are buyers. Brent Castillo is one recent homebuyer. "Despite all the destruction that's happened, what didn't get destroyed is the beach and the water, and that's why we come here," he said. "Our families love it. … We know that this community is going to rebuild, and that's why we want to buy here." It's a risky proposition, to be sure, but improved infrastructure and a reinforced causeway could make for a safer and more resilient community. Hurricanes, however, are intensifying as global and sea surface temperatures continue to rise. This means greater potential for injuries and deaths, property and business damages, and higher insurance and tax rates. Sanibel Public Information Officer Eric Jackson told WINK News that the city has instituted over 40 ordinance changes "to help expedite the recovery process." On May 1, beaches will open with 800 free parking spaces. A pair of resorts reopened in February. And trees and other vegetation are being planted. In the long term, the solution is to swap dirty energy sources for clean ones. The former — coal, gas, and oil — produce heat-trapping pollution when they are burned, not only warming Earth and harming human health but also exacerbating the effects of natural disasters. The latter promise a cooler, safer future. Do you think your house could withstand a hurricane? MPD increases security as festival season gets underway

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Festival season is underway in the city of Memphis. This means crowds of people will be packing downtown and Midtown to join in on the festivities. However, while the crowds may be picking up, there are concerns about how the recent crime will impact the festivities. The pots were boiling, the plates were full and stomachs were satisfied at the Porter-Leath's 32nd Annual Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival. Arrest made in connection to MSCS students' homicide Hundreds of people came from all over to enjoy the cuisine on Riverside Drive. 'It's about 6 of us together. So, we gone eat up,' visitors Eric Jackson and Kareem Covington said. 'Actually, a great opportunity to take my wife out on a date,' Garland Holmon told WREG. It's one of the many festivals taking place downtown this spring. However, even though festivities will be picking up, crime in the city of Memphis has been picking up as well. Memphis Police responded to at least 28 homicides this month. WREG has reported that many of the victims have been children, including a 17-year-old who was killed during a food truck festival at Tom Lee Park. Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said some of the gun violence is gang-related and some was domestic. 'Get your children': Memphis police chief calls youth gun violence 'catastrophic situation' Either way, she called it all 'nonsense' and said the department has implemented several initiatives and utilized various tools to keep the city safe. During Sunday's festival, WREG, as well as several attendees we spoke to, noticed several officers in the area. 'I feel comfortable. I am not afraid and I am happy to be here. They checked our bags twice when we came in,' Mary and Garland Holmon said. 'Safety has been a big deal, but I've noticed they have a lot of security here,' Janet Prater said. 'I feel pretty safe.' While some fear the violence will only get worse, others say they refuse to feel trapped in their own homes. 'We're not going to be held hostage, Garland Holmon said. 'We think that the city is eventually going to go in the right direction, and there's no way to capitalize on that if we don't start supporting it now.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Investor Sells Nvidia (NVDA), Buys Alibaba (BABA)

Eric Jackson, the Founder/President and Portfolio Manager of EMJ Capital, told CNBC yesterday that he had sold his Nvidia (NVDA) stock and bought shares of Alibaba (BABA). "Alibaba is a better AI play than Nvidia at least through Q2 and maybe for the rest of the year," Jackson said. NVDA's Technicals Have Been Poor, Jackson Says NVDA "hasn't been acting well since (its) earnings," explained Jackson, adding that he is not impressed by the name's charts. Additionally, he believes that small-cap stocks will produce higher gains in the shorter term than the Mag 7 names. On the other hand, Jackson said that NVDA remains "a great company with great products." He added that "the roadmap that the company recently presented was fantastic." BABA Is "Very Undervalued," Jackson Says BABA's decision to spend more "reasonable" amounts on AI going forward is "smart," according to the investor. Additionally, he believes that BABA "can surprise people with a DeepSeek-type announcement of their own," and he thinks that the Chinese tech giant can make major acquisitions that will impress the market. While we acknowledge the potential of NVDA, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than NVDA but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock.
