Northern lights likely to return to B.C. tonight
A person takes a photo of aurora borealis or the Northern Lights in Vancouver, B.C., Saturday, May. 11, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns British Columbians may have another chance to see the aurora borealis Sunday night. The light show was visible as south as Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria Saturday, when the geomagnetic storm began. 'There are indications that the coronal mass ejection passage is weakening, but the solar wind conditions remain elevated, therefore additional periods of G3-G4 (Strong-Severe) levels remain possible,' reads the Sunday forecast from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 'However, we now anticipate that conditions should weaken enough by tomorrow evening, June 2.' The forecast shows the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island on the lower end of aurora likelihood, while further north the chance is high. The NOAA predicts the event to peak between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday. Several people took to social media after Saturday's aurora to show off their photos and videos of the lights.
