More Tamu Desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year

Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Madani Government, through Kuskop, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Madani Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. Implement federal-funded projects in Sabah according to schedule - Ewon

KOTA BELUD (June 3): Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick stated that all development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be carried out according to the schedule set. Ewon, who also serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Datuk Shahelmey and I are responsible for monitoring and proposing solutions to any issues causing delays in the commencement of these projects. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Meeting,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall here yesterday. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the implementation of the Special Intervention Meetings, initiated earlier this year, had shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries, and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described this decrease as a positive development resulting from the cooperation of various parties. 'We have proposed several measures to technical departments and the ministries responsible for the projects so that any outstanding issues can be discussed and resolved. 'I hope the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to rise in the upcoming meetings,' he said. He also expressed his appreciation to all ministries, the Sabah Government and technical departments that have succeeded in expediting procurement processes, contractor appointments, and tenders for projects that had not yet begun. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all those involved in this intervention committee,' he said.

He said the government successfully built or upgraded 98 Tamu Desa premises across the two states last year and hopes to match or exceed that number this year with the new funding. Ewon noted that 14 of the completed Tamu Desa facilities were in Kota Belud and highlighted their impact on small-scale traders, especially women, by providing comfortable trading spaces that double as venues for community activities. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said his ninistry plans to build more Tamu Desa premises in Sabah and Sarawak this year, as part of efforts to improve facilities for rural market stalls and to empower Tamu entrepreneurs. Ewon said that the MADANI Government, through his ministry, has allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Premises Development Project this year. He added that this includes an additional RM10 million allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 Tamu Desa premises throughout Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope we can construct the same number or even more,' he said to reporters after officiating the Kaamatan Festival at Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat and launching the Tamu Desa premises at Tamu Darat, here Monday. The Tamu Desa premises in the village, which cost RM250,000, began construction at the end of last year and will be completed this year. For the first time, the government, through KUSKOP, introduced the Tamu Desa Premises Development Project in 2024, with an allocation of RM20 million in the 2024 Budget to implement Tamu Desa premises across Sabah and Sarawak. Ewon said that out of the 98 Tamu Desa premises completed throughout Sabah and Sarawak last year, 14 were built in the Kota Belud area. 'I was informed by village leaders that these premises have brought great benefits to the local community, especially to mothers and small entrepreneurs who trade weekly. 'It not only provides a more comfortable space for trading but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. He added that the requirements for developing Tamu Desa premises vary depending on the location and the scope of work determined by the District Office, whether it involves new construction or upgrading. 'The cost of upgrades ranges from RM100,000 to as much as RM300,000. Therefore, the ministry will allocate funds based on the value and needs submitted by each respective district office,' he said. Ewon mentioned that as of May 2025, applications for new construction and upgrades of Tamu Desa premises in Sabah alone have reached RM40 million, including pending applications carried over from last year that have yet to be implemented. 'This total does not yet include applications from Sarawak. Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what we have implemented last year. 'What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident this programme will become one of the ministry's key contributions to the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. Ewon added that the Tamu Desa initiative is part of the government's commitment to paying special attention to rural needs in Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the country's inclusive development agenda and the Look East Policy.

Strong cooperation key to Penampang's development - Ewon

PENAMPANG (June 2): The Member of Parliament here, Datuk Ewon Benedick, stressed that close cooperation between elected representatives and government leaders is vital to ensure successful development in their respective constituencies. Ewon, who is also the Federal Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives MInister, said his continued collaboration with Kapayan assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang has allowed for smoother implementation of various programmes and development plans in Penampang, particularly in the Kapayan area. 'Whenever there is a need, an issue, or a development matter in Penampang, my office together with the Kapayan ADUN Service Centre will sit down to discuss the best way to assist our community. We do not work in silos, but as a team,' he said. He was speaking at the Kaamatan Festival celebration for the Kapayan constituency, held at Dewan Kibouvang here recently. The event was officiated by Human Resources Minister Steven Shim. Also present were Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Sandakan member of parliament Vivian Wong and Bandar Kuching member of parliament Dr Kelvin Yii. Ewon said that this collaboration has also led to the creation of the Penampang Development Plan 2024–2035, which is now a key component of the proposed 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) for the development of the Penampang parliamentary constituency. He added that thanks to joint efforts with other elected representatives and government leaders, several federal ministers have visited Penampang to see first-hand the needs of the local community, including flood mitigation projects and other development initiatives that are underway or in the pipeline. 'I am confident that with the strategic cooperation and development plans we have drawn up, together with the Federal Cabinet and state government, Penampang will benefit from greater development allocation under RMK13. 'With the presence of my Cabinet colleagues here in Penampang, I am confident that development in both Kapayan and Moyog will continue to progress,' he said. Ewon highlighted several ongoing major projects in Penampang, including the flood mitigation project, upgrading of the Terian-Buayan road, construction of a bridge in Babagon, and the implementation of the PANTAS programme in Kampung Togudon. He also said that under his ministry alone, several agency offices have already been established in Penampang, including the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN), TEKUN Nasional, an MSME Hub, and a Live Studio facility at the TEKUN Penampang Office. In addition, the Tamu Desa project has been implemented in Penampang to support local market traders and small entrepreneurs. On the Kaamatan celebration, Ewon said it is now celebrated by all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or culture. 'This is in line with the theme 'Kaamatan for All'. Kaamatan is not just for the Kadazandusun community in Sabah — it is also celebrated overseas by Sabahans, particularly the Kadazandusun diaspora,' he said.
