Akshay Oberoi breaks silence on 'Takht' dream; says 'It crushed my soul' when film was shelved; fighter gave him hope

For years, speculation surrounded Akshay Oberoi 's association with Karan Johar 's ambitious historical drama 'Takht'. Now, in a candid conversation with News18 Showsha, Akshay has confirmed that he was indeed cast in the film—specifically, as Murad Baksh, the third brother of Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh. Recalling his first meeting with Karan, Akshay shared how touched he was by the filmmaker's gesture. 'He told me he hadn't even seen my audition but liked my previous work and wanted to collaborate. We did the look test—it felt surreal.' But that dream would soon come to a halt. 'It was soul-crushing': The day it fell apart Akshay remembers the day Takht was shelved like it was yesterday. 'I was sitting in my living room and saw the news in the paper. That's how I found out—it wasn't communicated to me directly,' he reveals. 'It crushed my soul. I still have a photo of me in costume, and sometimes I look at it and think, 'I really looked the part.'' The Covid-19 pandemic had already brought the industry to its knees, and the shelving of such a massive project added to the heartbreak. Despite the setback, Akshay didn't lose hope. As the world slowly opened up post-pandemic, he was offered Fighter, which felt like divine compensation. 'My team at Exceed told me, 'Teri kundli mein likha hai, ek badi film aayegi.' And they were right. 'Takht' didn't happen, but 'Fighter' did. Der aaye durust aaye fits my life perfectly,' he smiles. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar was recently seen in the comedy entertainer film 'Housefull 5' which turned out to be a blockbuster despite mixed reviews. Akshay Oberoi Says Karan Johar Had Cast Him In Takht: 'It Crushed My Soul When...'

Last Updated: Akshay Oberoi says he got to know that Takht has been put on the backburner through a story in a newspaper as he feels he wasn't 'privileged to get that information first-hand'. In August 2019, Karan Johar announced Takht, a magnum opus period drama, based in the Mughal era that would chronicle the enmity between Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh for the succession of the throne. The star-studded ensemble comprised Ranveer Singh (Dara Shukoh), Vicky Kaushal (Aurangzeb), Anil Kapoor (Shah Jahan), Kareena Kapoor Khan (Jahanara Begum), Alia Bhatt (Dilras Banu Begum), Janhvi Kapoor (Nadira Banu Begum) and Bhumi Pednekar (Roshanara Begum). A year later, in 2020, reports started doing the rounds that Akshay Oberoi has been roped in to play Jahanara Begum's husband in the film. But Akshay refused to comment on the speculations. These reports were later refuted with another report stating that he was not cast in that role. Eventually, the film, which was initially slated to begin production in March 2020 with a Christmas 2021 release date, was shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Akshay finally opens up on Takht and reveals that he indeed was offered a part in the film. But it was that of Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh's brother. 'Karan had cast me in Takht. That would be the first film that I would've done with them. Shanoo Sharma had tested me for the part of the third brother after Ranveer and Vicky. Murad Baksh was the name of the character," he tells us. Recalling his conversation with Karan, he shares, 'I met Karan. He was so fascinating and open. He told me that he didn't even see my audition but that he had watched my previous works and wanted to collaborate with me. It was very sweet of him. We did the look test. But then Covid happened and the film shut down." And when that happened, it was 'soul-crushing' for Akshay. 'It was so heart breaking. It was a huge film. I still have a picture of me in that costume. I sometimes look at it and tell myself, 'I look the part!' When I got news that the film wasn't happening anymore, it crushed my soul. Covid mein already dhanda bandh tha. I remember sitting in my living room and looking at the newspaper that carried the news that the film is being shelved. That's when I read about it for the first time because I wasn't privileged to get that information first-hand," he says. But things began looking up when Fighter came his way, a film he believes is a 'replacement for Takht'. 'The industry was shut and there was this sense of uncertainty. But I thought that once things are over, we'll start the shoot. And when Fighter came my way, my management team at Exceed had told me that mere kundli mein yeh hai ki ek badi film aayegi. I believed them. I accepted it that Takht didn't happen. And soon after Covid was over, I was offered Fighter. The phrase 'der aaye durust aaye' applies a lot to my life," says Akshay. Missouri Lawmakers Ban Controversial Reading Instruction Model as Primary Method

This article was originally published in Missouri Independent. Missouri lawmakers have banned educators from leaning on a model of reading instruction called the 'three-cueing' method as part of a bipartisan education package signed by Gov. Mike Kehoe on Wednesday. The law mandates that three cueing, which teaches students to read using context clues, can be used to supplement lessons, but phonics should be the majority of instruction. Get stories like this delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for The 74 Newsletter State Rep. Ed Lewis, a Moberly Republican and sponsor of the legislation, told The Independent that the law builds on prior legislative efforts and work from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. 'We've come to the realization that phonics is crucial,' Lewis said. 'The three cueing system, when used as the primary source, evidence shows a decrease in the amount of learning that occurs, and for that reason, we want to use it less.' Three cueing is widely criticized for encouraging kids to make guesses when reading and doesn't show how to sound out words, which is important for understanding complicated texts. Missouri isn't the only state to ban three cueing. By the end of 2024, at least 11 states had explicitly banned the method. The problem with three cueing, which once was lauded as an alternative to phonics, came to public attention when American Public Media reporter Emily Hanford investigated reading instruction and later launched the podcast series 'Sold a Story.' The series armed those backing the 'science of reading' in a longstanding war between phonics instruction and context-clue-based models and state laws followed — including a literacy bill passed in Missouri in 2022. The 2022 legislation required state education officials to create a teacher preparatory course on literacy. DESE, in turn, launched its 'Read, Lead, Exceed' initiative, including instruction for educators. As of this spring, 429 school districts and over 8,600 educators have had training in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling, or LETRS. 'It is pretty intense training,' Missouri Education Commissioner Karla Eslinger told The Independent. 'It creates an opportunity for the teachers to use that science of reading, that evidence-based best practices on how you teach reading.' The training and other science-backed materials provided by the department are not mandatory but participation has been encouraging, Eslinger said. She expects elementary literacy rates to rise as a result of the training and other efforts since 2022, like literacy coaches the department hired. With a charge to ban three cueing as the primary form of reading instruction, Eslinger said the department will continue to push best practices. 'We are not going to police this,' she said. 'We are going to show good practice and give support to good practice, so it just bolsters what we're doing.' As part of a checklist school districts provide annually to the department, they will be required to confirm that they are not using three cueing as a primary instructional model. 'The work that our literacy teams are doing in the state is all being very well received. (Educators) are wanting more and more,' Eslinger said. 'It is not because it is mandated, it is because it works.' 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander: Upgraded spec means price rises for petrol-powered models

Details about Australia-bound petrol-only variants of the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander range have been announced, with all models throughout the range receiving a price bump of at least $2000. The updated petrol-only variants of the Outlander range go on sale locally from June. The model walk now consists of the ES, LS, Aspire, Exceed, and Exceed Touring. The Black Edition, which sat between the ES and LS has been deleted. Revisions to the plug-in hybrid range will be released at a later date. Pricing listed in this article is before on-road costs, which varies from state to state. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. All petrol variants have subtly revised front fascia designs, and smoked tail-light lenses with full LED lighting. There's a larger centre bin, and cupholders that are now positioned along the length of the centre tunnel. Gone are the 8.0 and 9.0-inch infotainment screens, as all variants are now equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and three USB-C ports up front. Yahama-branded sound systems are standard throughout the range, with all models bar the Exceed Touring featuring an eight speaker setup. As we've previously reported, all 2025 petrol Outlanders are fitted with an Australian-developed steering and suspension tuning package. All petrol-only versions of the Outlander remain powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder making 135kW and 244Nm that's paired exclusively to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Kicking things off is ES, which is now priced from $39,990 (+$2250). It includes black cloth seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, and the aforementioned 12.3-inch touchscreen and eight-speaker Yahama sound system. All-wheel drive is a $2500 option, but the ES is a strictly five-seat affair with the third row deleted from the options list. One step up is the LS that now starts at $43,290 (+$2050). Upgrades include black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels, three rows of seat for a 5+2 layout, and two USB-C ports for the middle row. All-wheel drive is a $2500 option. The LS and above are the first Australia-bound models to feature the Mitsubishi Connect system, which includes SOS emergency call assist, and automated notifications for collisions, theft and tow away. With a smartphone app owners can also remotely program the climate control system, preheat seats, find the vehicle, and send destinations to the navigation system. In the middle of the pack is the seven-seat only Aspire priced at $47,790 (+$2950), which has 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels, black Granlux faux leather trim, a heated steering wheel, lane keeping assistance, and traffic jam assist. Towards the top of the pile is the Exceed that has a $55,140 RRP (+$2500). While pre-update Exceeds had seven seats, the revised model has just five seats, but includes a full-size alloy spare and a rear cargo floor box with lid. Other features include quilted leather upholstery in black or grey, heated and ventilated front seats, aluminium pedals, frameless digital rear vision mirror, wing mirrors with auto tilt and memory settings, and front door foot lamps. Topping the range is the $57,990 (+2800) Exceed Touring. Like the Exceed below it, it has lost two seats but gained a full-size alloy spare. There's also quilted Brick Brown semi-aniline leather upholstery, massaging front seats, heated outboard rear seats, and a 12-speaker 1650W Yahama Ultimate sound system with subwoofer and dual amplifiers. The Exceed Touring is also the only variant in the Outlander range to be available with a variety two-tone paint schemes: White Diamond, Moonstone Grey or Graphite Grey with a black mica roof; or Black Diamond with a Sterling Silver roof. Lesser models in the Outlander range are available in solid white, Cosmic Blue pearl, Sterling Silver metallic, Graphite Grey metallic, White Diamond prestige, Red Diamond prestige, and Black Diamond prestige. Aspire and Exceed variants can also be specified with Moonstone Grey prestige. The revised Outlander range comes with a five-year, 100,000km warranty as standard. This can be extended to 10 years and 200,000km if you service within Mitsubishi's dealer network using its capped-price service program. All vehicles are sold with 12 months of roadside assist, which can be extended for up to four years when the vehicle is serviced at an authorised Mitsubishi dealer.
