Ford recalls 56K F-150 pickups for seat belt warning chime
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Ford Motor Co. has recalled over 56,000 F-150 pickups due to a condition where the seat belt warning chime may fail to activate to remind occupants to buckle up, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The malfunction that led to the recall only affects 2025 F-150 trucks equipped with Ford's 3.5 liter, EcoBoost hybrid V6 engine. Dealers will update the audio control module software for free, although Ford currently does not have a software remedy available. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Aug. 25, with a second notice to be sent once the software update is ready. Dive Insight: The fault is believed to be related to a low change condition of the 12-volt battery. If the voltage is too low when starting the vehicle, the 'start of trip' seat belt reminder chime may not play from the vehicle's audio head unit, which could lead to decreased seat belt usage that can increase the risk of injury in a crash, per the report. A Ford employee who noticed the issue alerted the company when the seat belt chime in their hybrid F-150 wasn't audible upon startup. The employee escalated the concern to the automaker's Critical Concern Review Group on May 29. From June through July, Ford's investigators conducted testing and data review of the audio control module to determine the root cause. The team found that the audio head unit in F-150 pickups equipped with hybrid powertrains can be subjected to a 'high-voltage interrupt' during start-up, resulting in a reset condition that stops the playback of the seat belt reminder chime. Based on this initial probe, the Ford's investigators confirmed that all other vehicle chimes worked normally for approximately three seconds after the vehicle's audio head unit was reset. The automaker's Critical Concern Review Group also conducted a read-across with its audio control module team, which concluded that the problem only occurred on 2025 F-150 hybrid models and not others. Ford reviewed this concern and its compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and also met with the NHTSA. The parties determined that the fault posed a safety risk and the automaker's Field Review Committee approved the voluntary recall on July 18. The audio control module was sourced from Michigan-based Tier 1 supplier Visteon Corp. and an estimated 100% of the recalled hybrid pickups are believed to have the software defect. The dealer software update will ensure that the audible chimes play back in all starting conditions, according to the report. Ford is not aware of any warranty claims or Vehicle Owner Questionnaires received by the NHTSA that's related to the condition. The automaker is also not aware of any accidents or injuries. Ford's recall count in 2025 has now reached 94, which is the highest number for any automaker in a single year, according to NHTSA data. Since June 30, Ford issued nine separate recalls potentially extending to over 1.7 million vehicles. Japan to import Ford F-150 trucks under new US trade deal
TOKYO: Japan will begin importing Ford F-150 pickup trucks under a revised trade agreement with the US. US President Donald Trump confirmed the deal, stating Japan will accept US vehicle safety standards. The new arrangement includes a 15% reciprocal tariff, down from a previously threatened 25%. Trump praised the deal in a CNBC interview, calling the F-150 'very beautiful' and predicting strong sales. Japanese automakers sell millions of cars in the US annually, but American vehicles remain rare in Japan. Ford exited the Japanese market nearly a decade ago due to low demand for large vehicles. The F-150's width of 2.4 metres makes it impractical for many Japanese roads. Disagreements persist over when Japan's 27.5% auto tariffs will drop to 15%. A recent US executive order suggested the 15% cap applies only to the EU, not Japan. Japan's tariffs envoy Ryosei Akazawa is in Washington to clarify the agreement's details. Akazawa aims to ensure the US implements the tariff changes by Thursday as planned. Trump also claimed Japan would invest $550 billion in the US, retaining 90% of profits. Japanese officials clarified the investment would mostly involve loans and guarantees. - AFP

Japan-US trade agreement: Tokyo to import ‘very beautiful' Ford F-150s; duties on Japanese car exports still unclear
Japan is set to begin importing Ford's hefty F-150 pickup trucks, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, even as questions linger over the full scope of the countries' trade agreement. The move comes as part of a deal announced in July, under which Japanese imports will be hit with a 15% "reciprocal" tariff, lower than the 25% previously threatened. The new rate is due to take effect from Thursday, in line with changes affecting several other countries. In exchange, Tokyo has agreed to lift "restrictions" on American cars entering Japan, including a key concession to recognise US vehicle safety standards. 'They're taking our cars,' Trump told CNBC in a phone interview. 'They're taking the very beautiful Ford F-150, which does very well. And I'm sure we'll do very well there, and other things that do very well here will also do well there.' While Japanese carmakers export millions of vehicles to the US each year, American cars are a rare sight on Japanese roads. Ford pulled out of the Japanese market nearly ten years ago, citing weak sales, as reported by AFP. The F-150, which is 2.4 metres (96 inches) wide with mirrors, is considered too large for Japan's narrow roads, and American models often come with steering wheels on the left-hand side, opposite to Japanese driving norms. Despite the headline agreement, several aspects of the trade deal remain unclear. A major sticking point is when the US will reduce its own tariffs on Japanese cars. Currently, these stand at 27.5%, made up of a long-standing 2.5% levy plus an additional 25% introduced under Trump. That figure is meant to drop to 15%, though a timeline has yet to be confirmed. There is also uncertainity on whether other levies on Japan will be capped at 15%, or if this would come on top of existing ones. A recent US executive order suggested that the upper limit would apply solely to the European Union, not Japan. On Tuesday, Japan's tariffs envoy Ryosei Akazawa departed for Washington on what marks his ninth trip in ongoing trade talks. 'One purpose of my visit is to prompt the issuance of the president's executive order regarding tariffs on autos and auto parts as early as possible,' Akazawa said before leaving. 'I have confirmed with the United States that there are no discrepancies (regarding the reciprocal tariff rates), but keeping in mind the new duties will be implemented on Thursday, I would like to provide a reminder for a thorough response beforehand,' local media quoted him as saying. Adding to the confusion, Trump claimed that Japan would be investing $550 billion into the US economy, with America retaining 90% of the profits. 'That's like a signing bonus that a baseball player would get,' he told CNBC. 'That's our money. It's our money to invest as we like.' However, Japanese officials have indicated the sum will mainly comprise loans and loan guarantees, rather than direct investment.
