Ford recalls more than a million vehicles for software glitch that makes rearview camera unreliable

Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said. The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse. The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an "over-the-air" update at a later date. A preliminary letter notifying owners of the safety risk is expected to be mailed June 16, with a second letter to be sent once the update is available, expected sometime in the third quarter of 2025. The following Ford vehicles - a total of 1,075,299 - are included in the recall: 2021-2024 Bronco 2021-2024 Edge 2023-2024 Escape 2021-2024 F-150 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600 2022-2024 Expedition 2022-2025 Transit 2021-2023 Mach-E 2024 Ranger 2024 Mustang 2021-2023 Lincoln Nautilus 2022-2024 Navigator 2023-2024 Corsair Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 25S49. Owners may also call the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or go to

Ford recalls nearly 1.1 million vehicles over rearview camera software issue

By David Shepardson (Reuters) -Ford Motor is recalling nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the United States because rearview cameras may not display images due to a software issue, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall covers some 2021 through 2024 model year Bronco, F-150, Edge, and 2023-2024 Escape, Corsair, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 and F-600 vehicles, the automaker said Wednesday in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall also impacts the 2022-2024 Expedition, 2022-2025 Transit, 2021-2023 Mach-E, Lincoln Nautilus, 2024 Ranger, Mustang and the 2022-2024 Navigator. NHTSA said the software issue may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze, or not display. Ford said it is aware of one allegation of a minor crash resulting in property damage tied to the issue. In January, NHTSA contacted Ford regarding allegations of more than three dozen rear-view camera complaints on 2021-2023 Ford F-150 vehicles. In April, a Ford engineering team was able to reproduce the failure mode within a vehicle and link the causal factors to specific software variants. Dealers are expected to update vehicle software through an over-the-air update. The software being recalled serves as an operating system for the car's dashboard, helping its infotainment system to control apps and display maps, among others. Letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed by June 16. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available later this year. Ford in April issued two other recalls in the United States for rearview camera issues covering about 289,000 vehicles in total. For both recalls, the automaker will replace rearview cameras. In November, NHTSA said Ford had agreed to a $165 million civil penalty after an agency investigation found the automaker failed to recall vehicles with defective rearview cameras in a timely manner. NHTSA in August 2021 opened an investigation after Ford in 2020 recalled about 620,000 vehicles for a rear camera issue to determine whether the carmaker had made the recall in a timely fashion. Ford expanded that recall in 2022 and in March adding about 24,000 vehicles.

Gunfire hits Honda in reported road rage case in Port St. Lucie; arrest made

PORT ST. LUCIE — A 39-year-old driver accused in a road rage incident of shooting an AR type rifle from his pickup at a Honda, striking the Honda with gunfire, was arrested, according to Port St. Lucie Police. Ali Sami Zaiter, of Port St. Lucie, on May 28 was booked in at the St. Lucie County Jail on two counts related to attempted crime against a person that could cause death, two counts related to weapons offenses, and single counts each of discharging a firearm from a vehicle and tampering with evidence, according to sheriff's records. The arrest follows a May 25 reported road rage incident. Police about 7:30 p.m. that day went to the area of Southeast Crosstown Parkway and Southeast Sandia Drive where the driver and passenger of a Honda Accord reported the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup fired several shots from an AR style rifle at them while they were in their vehicle. Two shots struck the Honda, but neither occupant was hurt. Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson, on May 29 stated what he called a road rage incident began on Southeast Crosstown Parkway from U.S. 1 heading west. '(Zaiter) allegedly cut off the victim's vehicle that started the incident,' Mesiti stated. Police said the accused shooter, later identified as Zaiter, left the scene before officers arrived. Mesiti said the driver of the Honda and his passenger, a woman, did not know the accused gunman before the incident occurred. Police identified the F-150 using surveillance cameras and other techniques, Mesiti stated. Investigators about 4:30 p.m. May 28 executed a search warrant and arrested Zaiter at his home in the 200 block of Southwest Bridgeport Drive.
