Crystal Palace humble Liverpool in Community Shield

Crystal Palace humble Liverpool in Community Shield Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi lifts the trophy as he celebrates with teammates after winning the FA Community Shield. Photo: Reuters Crystal Palace beat Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield after an entertaining 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday, with keeper Dean Henderson reprising his penalty-saving heroics from their FA Cup final triumph. Substitute Justin Devenny scored the winning spot kick, after Mohamed Salah skied the Reds' first penalty and Henderson – who saved an Omar Marmoush penalty as Palace won their first major trophy against Manchester City in May – then saved efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. "They were 2-1 up, you would think we were out of the game," Henderson said. "The manager said we would get chances in the second half ... and we deserved that in the end." New recruit Hugo Ekitike had put Liverpool ahead inside four minutes after he and record signing Florian Wirtz combined beautifully before the Frenchman produced a superb finish. But Palace deservedly levelled in the 17th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta sending Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaila Sarr. Close-season signing Jeremie Frimpong restored the Reds' lead, as Liverpool fans marked the death of Portugal forward Diogo Jota with 20 minutes on the clock in honour of his shirt number, sending an attempted cross looping in off the post. "We could have maybe scored the third one in the first 15 to 20 minutes after halftime but we didn't, we kept them alive," Liverpool boss Arne Slot said. Palace's England forward Eberechi Eze tested Alisson with a low shot before the Londoners equalised again with 13 minutes to play, Sarr slotting past the onrushing Alisson. Devenny got the winner in the shootout with an emphatic penalty to give Palace a third victory at Wembley in a row. Palace boss Oliver Glasner said he was "very happy with the squad", though he added that this season's European campaign – with Palace expected to find out on Monday if it will be in the Europa League or Conference League – will increase demands. He revealed that Northern Ireland midfielder Devenny had even volunteered for the pressure penalty. "Justin came (to me and said) 'I'll take it, I'll take the last one'," the Palace manager said, complimenting the 21-year-old's confidence. (Reuters)

Henderson the hero as Crystal Palace beats Liverpool in penalty shootout to win the Community Shield

Crystal Palace players celebrate after winning the FA Community Shield final soccer match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium in London,Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Dave Shopland) soccer By JAMES ROBSON Crystal Palace pulled off another Wembley upset by beating Premier League champion Liverpool to lift the Community Shield on Sunday. After stunning Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May, Palace defied the odds again — winning a penalty shootout 3-2 after the game ended in a 2-2 draw. 'It's incredible. We turned up today — they're the favorites, they've got unbelievable players, they're a great team,' Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson said. 'Two trophies in three months. That's incredible. Let's find the next bit of history.' Henderson saved two penalties in the shootout. 'I love the big moments. I love that pressure moment,' he said. Mohamed Salah also fired over with Liverpool's first spot kick and Palace substitute Justin Devenny converted the winning penalty by blasting high into the corner to spark huge celebrations. Victory in the FA Cup had seen Palace win the first major trophy in its history and it quickly followed that up with the Community Shield in the curtain-raising game for the new season in England's top flight. Oliver Glasner's team twice had to come from behind after new Liverpool signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were both on the score sheet. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr struck for Palace. 'It was a big performance. We were almost the same level as Liverpool. I'm really proud of the team and how they played,' said Palace coach Glasner. Ekitike — a $93.5 million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt — made a quick impression with his first goal for Liverpool coming after four minutes. The France forward showed a deft touch before turning on the edge of the box and sweeping a low shot into the far corner. Palace was back on level terms in the 17th from the penalty spot. Sarr was fouled by Virgil van Dijk, and Mateta sent Liverpool keeper Alisson the wrong way with his spot kick. Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead courtesy of a seemingly freak goal in the 21st. Carrying the ball on the right, the defender looked to lift a cross to the far post and watched as the ball spun wildly over the head of Henderson and over the line. Sarr leveled the game again in the 77th with a powerful finish from close range that beat Alisson via the inside of the post. It was his fourth goal in seven games against Liverpool. With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties and Salah got Liverpool off to the worst start by lifting his effort high over the bar. Henderson then saved further spot kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Mateta and Sarr struck for Palace but, with Eberechi Eze having his shot saved and Borna Sosa hitting the bar, the shootout came down to the final penalty, which Devenny crashed home. Last season's celebrations soon turned into a court battle for Palace after it was demoted from the second-tier Europa League to the third-tier UEFA Conference League. European soccer's governing body found Palace in breach of multi-club ownership regulations because of its ties to French club Lyon through American businessman John Textor. Palace lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and a verdict is expected on Monday. Fresh from winning a record-equaling 20th English league title last season, Liverpool has been active in the transfer market, spending $342 million on new signings Florian Wirtz, Ekitike, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. All four started at Wembley as Liverpool manager Arne Slot unveiled his new-look team. Ekitike and Frimpong made scoring starts. Wirtz provided an assist but wasted a good chance in the second half when firing over. "Because we are Liverpool, the pressure is always on. Even if we bring no players in, or we bring 10 players in, if you wear the Liverpool shirt there is always pressure,' Slot said. A tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident last month, was marred by some fans as players stood for a moment's silence before kickoff. Loud voices could be heard in the crowd, which prompted some boos, and referee Chris Kavanagh then blew his whistle to signal the end of the tribute. Liverpool has retired Jota's No. 20 jersey as a mark of respect and fans applauded him as the clock struck 20 minutes during the game. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. ‘Very Special' Liverpool Signing Proves his Worth in FA Community Shield Defeat

Liverpool's 2-2 Draw with Crystal Palace: Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz Shine Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield may have ended in disappointment, with Palace claiming a 3-2 victory on penalties, but it is far from a cause for panic. While the result wasn't what fans hoped for, there were plenty of positives to take away from the match as new signings made their first appearances for the Reds. No Cause for Panic Ahead of Premier League Opener Jack McIndoe, speaking on The Gags Tandon Show for Anfield Index, quickly downplayed any concerns that fans might have after the draw. 'I'm not panicking. I've had a little look on social media for two seconds and everyone is losing their minds,' he said. The sentiment here is clear: while the match highlighted areas for improvement, it is still early in the season, and there's no need to overreact to a single result. Looking at the game more objectively, there were positives that overshadowed the negatives. McIndoe pointed out, 'There's a lot that stood out or needs improving ahead of Friday but mainly there were no injuries, which is good.' This is crucial as Liverpool head into their Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth, with the squad in good shape. New Signings Shine in Debut Performance One of the major talking points from the match was the performance of Liverpool's new signings. The trio of Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike, who made their debuts in the Community Shield, were instrumental in the team's attacking play. McIndoe highlighted how the new recruits impressed, noting, 'In the first half, it was a very quick and bright start for Liverpool. The trio of new lads Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike linked up extremely well for the opening goal.' It was the kind of link-up play that Liverpool fans can look forward to in the season ahead. The pace and technical ability of these players offer a fresh dynamic in Liverpool's attack, with all three contributing to the fast, fluid football fans have come to expect from the club. Hugo Ekitike's Special Moment Among the new signings, it was Hugo Ekitike who truly stood out, particularly with his debut goal for Liverpool. As Connor of The Kop Council pointed out, 'It was a very special goal from a very special player. I think Hugo Ekitike was brilliant. He has his first goal for Liverpool and I think the big thing is that he could've had more.' His partnership with Florian Wirtz was also a highlight, as their link-up play looked sharp and well-rehearsed. McIndoe further praised Ekitike's composure, noting, 'The composure of Ekitike impressed me. We've all seen compilations where he has perhaps lacked that at times, but the way he opened up the defence and finished was brilliant.' Photo: IMAGO Ekitike's performance in the match gave fans a glimpse of the potential he brings to the squad, and his cool-headed finish was a testament to his growing confidence in front of goal. Dominik Szoboszlai's Role and the Technical Line-Up Another standout from the match was Dominik Szoboszlai, who slotted into a deeper role and proved to be an excellent fit. McIndoe highlighted that Szoboszlai's playing style suited this deeper position perfectly, helping to dictate play and providing an additional layer of technical quality to Liverpool's midfield. 'Dominik Szoboszlai suited the deeper role really well with his playing style,' McIndoe remarked, underscoring the player's versatility and importance to the team moving forward. As the season progresses, Liverpool's line-up will undoubtedly feature a blend of experience and fresh talent, with Szoboszlai, Ekitike, Wirtz, and Kerkez adding a dynamic, technical edge to the squad. Looking Ahead to Bournemouth and Beyond With the Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth on the horizon, Liverpool will be eager to build on the positives from the Community Shield. While the match against Crystal Palace may not have been the perfect start, it provided valuable insight into the team's potential. Fans can expect more fluid, technical football as the new signings continue to settle into their roles, and with no injuries to report, the Reds look primed for the season ahead.

Soccer-Liverpool need to tighten up defensively, Slot says after Community Shield loss

Soccer Football - FA Community Shield - Crystal Palace v Liverpool - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - August 10, 2025 Liverpool manager Arne Slot Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs LONDON (Reuters) -Liverpool have conceded too many goals in pre-season and need to adapt defensively when they begin their Premier League title defence, manager Arne Slot said on Sunday after his side lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace. The Reds have splashed the cash this summer, signing playmaker Florian Wirtz, plus forward Hugo Ekitike and attacking full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, though key players have also departed. After winning the league in Slot's first term with only Federico Chiesa added to the squad left by former boss Juergen Klopp, Liverpool fans' expectations for the coming season have been buoyed by the uncharacteristic transfer spree. The new-look side has started brightly, with Liverpool scoring 20 goals in six pre-season friendlies and looking fluent at times against Palace, with Slot saying his side "are able to create more and we are more comfortable on the ball". But after conceding two goals to Palace, having shipped eight in their last four warm-up games, Slot expressed concern that Liverpool's improved attack may have come at a price. "Last season we had a lot of ball possession but that didn't always lead to promising situations," Slot said after they were beaten 3-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw with Palace. "Now we are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were, in my opinion, throughout the whole last season. "But the other side is also true ... and what made us really strong last season was we only won mostly (by) a margin of one goal and that had mostly to do with us keeping a clean sheet or as a maximum conceding one goal." He added: "It needs maybe a little bit of adjustment defensively at the moment because we don't concede a lot of chances, but we do concede goals at the moment." Slot was nonetheless confident Liverpool could integrate their new signings, adding that "sometimes you need some time either to adapt offensively (or) to adapt defensively". New-look Liverpool beaten by Crystal Palace in Community Shield

Crystal Palace twice came from behind to stun a new-look Liverpool and win the FA Community Shield for the first time on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley. New signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong scored for the Premier League champions, but Palace responded through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr before winning an error-strewn shootout 3-2 on Sunday. Mohamed Salah blazed over from the spot, while Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott were denied by an inspired Dean Henderson as Palace built on winning their first ever major trophy by beating Manchester City in May's FA Cup final. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season was given extra significance after a summer marked by tragedy for Liverpool. Forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva. Reds legend Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the side of the pitch before kickoff, while the Liverpool end was awash with banners and flags paying tribute to the Portuguese international. A minute's silence, however, had to be cut short due to disturbances in the crowd. Jota's death has dampened the excitement over Liverpool's transfer spending spree to build on a squad that romped to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. All four of their new signings at a cost of 260 million pounds ($350m) – Ekitike, Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez – started. Ekitike's role this season could depend on whether Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. But the Frenchman – signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last month for an initial 69 million pounds ($93m) – made his case to be Liverpool manager Arne Slot's preferred number nine, no harm at all. Wirtz also bagged his first assist for the Reds when Ekitike spun onto the German's pass and fired into the far corner in just the fourth minute. Palace were making their first-ever appearance in the fixture, but the Eagles again showed their ability to match one of the Premier League's giants over 90 minutes. Mateta missed a glorious chance to level when he failed to beat Alisson Becker one-on-one. But from the rebound Sarr charged into the box and was tripped by an out-of-sorts Virgil van Dijk. Mateta coolly sent Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot to equalise. Liverpool's players were sporting a 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, that they will wear all season. The Liverpool fans had risen to chant Jota's name as the game entered the 20th minute when their side retook the lead. Frimpong's chipped cross caught out Henderson and flew into the far corner. Ekitike wasted a great chance for his second early in the second half from another Wirtz pass, as this time he fired over. However, Slot's new-look side are still to find the right balance between attack and defence, as has been evidenced during pre-season. Palace were a constant threat with balls in behind the Reds defence and levelled again 13 minutes from time. Sarr sped onto Adam Wharton's through ball and calmly slotted past Alisson for his fourth goal in seven games against Liverpool. Liverpool also survived a VAR review for a penalty against Mac Allister for handball before the match went to a shootout without extra time. Youngster Justin Devenny was the unlikely hero as he blasted the winning spot kick high past Alisson, showing Salah, Mac Allister and Elliott how it is done.
