Congratulations…Dame Alison Stewart

Press Release – Foundation for Arable Research – FAR This Honour, which recognises her pre-eminent contribution to plant science and the arable sector, is well deserved and recognises years of commitment. It seems fitting that it is announced just a few weeks before she steps down from her role with FAR. The Board and staff of the Foundation for Arable Research are delighted to congratulate FAR CEO, Alison Stewart, on her appointment as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. This Honour, which recognises her pre-eminent contribution to plant science and the arable sector, is well deserved and recognises years of commitment. It seems fitting that it is announced just a few weeks before she steps down from her role with FAR. In response to the appointment, Professor Stewart, whose full title is Emeritus Distinguished Professor, says she is absolutely thrilled. 'It seems redundant to say it, but it really is a great honour. And it's an honour I'm pleased to share with the plant science community and the arable sector, both huge, but often unrecognised contributors to New Zealand's agriculture and horticulture industries. 'I've been involved with plant science and plant pathology for my whole working career, with the shift to arable coming about when I joined FAR in 2018. Working in the arable industry has been an absolute pleasure and privilege. The sector is an exemplar of a sustainable and resilient farming system, and we should be really proud of it.' Dame Alison was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of services to biology in 2009. Other career honours and achievements include: PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Stirling (1984) First female Professor at Lincoln University (1998) Bayer – NZ Innovators Award (2012) Founding Director of the Bio-Protection Research Centre at Lincoln University (2003-2011) AgResearch Technology Transfer Award (2002) Agricom Significant Achievement Award for Research Excellence (2001) MAFBNZ Biosecurity Award for Excellence (2008) Distinguished Professor of Plant Pathology, Lincoln University (2011) Fellow of the NZ Institute for Agricultural and Horticultural Science (2006) Fellow of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society (2011)

UN honors fallen Moroccan peacekeeper Karim Temara

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid a solemn tribute to Corporal Karim Temara, a member of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) who lost his life in 2024 while serving with MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the annual ceremony honoring UN staff who died in service, the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal was posthumously awarded to the Moroccan peacekeeper. Morocco's Ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, along with Colonel Najim Assid, military advisor to Morocco's Permanent Mission, attended the tribute, which was held Thursday at the UN headquarters. The ceremony also honored the memory of more than 4,400 UN peacekeepers who have fallen since 1948, including 57 who died in 2024. «We salute the courage of these men and women who died far from home, serving humanity's most noble cause: peace», Guterres said. He also recalled that over two million peacekeepers have served in 71 missions across the world. Ambassador Hilale extended his condolences to the families of the fallen and praised the commitment of peacekeepers dedicated to peace, security, and universal values. Ahead of the ceremony, a military parade featured three FAR officers stationed at the UN Department of Peace Operations in New York.

DDA's first international-level ice skating rink in Dwarka likely to open by October 2025

The Delhi Development Authority 's (DDA) first international-level ice skating rink is likely to be ready by October this year at its sports complex in Dwarka Sector 23, officials said on Saturday. The DDA is developing a sports complex spread across 17 acres with multiple facilities, including a football ground, hockey ground, and the ice skating rink. It has issued a tender seeking professional sports agencies to operate and maintain the facility. "In Dwarka Sector 23, the ice skating rink is being specially designed, and the work is likely to be completed soon. We have issued a tender for professionals to operate this and other facilities," a DDA official said. The authority is also working on two other sports complexes in Dwarka -- in Sector 8 spread across 23 acres and in Sector 19 which covers 19 acres. "The vision is to focus on inclusivity, excellence, sustainability, and long-term development of sports. The DDA aims to establish specialised Centres of Excellence (CoE) for different sports at selected facilities, providing high-performance training environments for athletes," the official said. Live Events According to the plan, the Sector 8 complex will host a CoE for wrestling , boxing , judo, and karate, while Sector 19 will focus on tennis and shooting. The Sector 23 complex will have facilities for hockey and football. The company will be responsible for developing hostel facilities at the Sector 8 complex as per prevailing FAR norms and procuring necessary sports and non-sports equipment. The DDA has already procured part of the equipment, and the remaining will be provided by the concessionaire, the tender reads. In its budget announced in April, the DDA allocated Rs 250 crore for the construction of new sports complexes -- one each in Dwarka, Rohini, and at the Golf Course in Dwarka. The CoE at Dwarka Sector 8 was inaugurated by Lt Governor VK Saxena on May 8. The deadline for Sector 19 is July and for Sector 23, October 2025. "To ensure that sports enthusiasts can fully benefit from these facilities and to encourage budding talent capable of competing at the highest levels, professional coaching will also be provided for boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, and taekwondo ," Saxena said at the inauguration. Currently, the DDA manages 17 sports complexes and three golf courses in the national capital, with more such facilities being developed. PTI

Sahara : Moroccan drone strikes Polisario vehicles

On Thursday afternoon, May 29, a drone from the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) targeted and destroyed vehicles belonging to the Polisario. «The strike took place near Mijek, east of the Sand Wall, at the border with Mauritania. It is still too early to determine the exact number of casualties among members of the Front's militias. The vehicles were completely destroyed», a Moroccan security source told Yabiladi. Meanwhile, Polisario-affiliated media offered a different version of events, claiming that the Moroccan Air Force drone strike «killed Mauritanian civilians who were searching for gold». The Mauritanian press, particularly outlets based in the Zouerate region, has not yet reported on the incident. Typically, they are the first to cover FAR drone strikes when Mauritanian gold prospectors are affected, often providing the names of the victims. This was the case following the May 16 strike in the locality of Karzaze.
