Liverpool set to recruit 'highly-rated' Man Utd coach as new under-18s manager
Liverpool are in advanced talks to recruit 'highly-rated' coach Simon Wiles from their arch rivals Manchester United, according to reports. Wiles is currently in charge of United U14s at Old Trafford but is now set to become the U18s head coach for Premier League champions Liverpool. The 40-year-old only joined United in September 2024 after a spell as caretaker boss of Salford City, owned by Gary Neville and David Beckham. But The Athletic have reported that Wiles is now heading to Anfield to replace Marc Bridge-Wilkinson as the Reds' new U18s manager. Wiles' first coaching role came in Blackpool's academy in June 2013, before he decided to refocus on his playing career, which ended in 2018. After hanging up his boots, Wiles became an U18s coach for League One club Fleetwood Town and was their interim manager in 2021 when they sacked Joey Barton. He swapped Fleetwood for Salford in 2022, working as a first-team coach, before being snapped up by United's academy in September last year. His expected departure from Old Trafford is a significant blow given the amount of academy coaches to progress and leave for a raised position. Justin Cochrane, Paul McShane, Tom Huddlestone, Neil Wood, Neil Ryan, and Neil Gittins are just some of the other coaches to have left United. Wiles is expected to work with Anthony Ryan when he joins Liverpool, who will step up from the U15s to become assistant head coach for the U18s. Ryan is currently working as Liverpool U18s' interim boss after Bridge-Wilkinson left following 10 years of service at the end of last season. Wiles played as a midfielder for the likes of Blackpool, Dunfermline Athletic and Barrow. He also spent time on loan at Macclesfield Town. After leaving Barrow, he became an U10s coach for former club Blackpool but then joined Chorley before spells at Salford and Bamber Bridge. Wiles won the FA Trophy with Barrow during the 2009-10 season. He played 40 games for Blackpool – where he started his career in 2003 – with 27 of those appearances coming when they were in League One. The Blues now know when they will begin their campaigns in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Relegation to the National League means United will enter the FA Cup in the fourth qualifying round, rather than the first round proper which applies to clubs in Leagues One and Two. Advertisement The date for the fourth qualifying round in 2025/26 is Saturday, October 11, when United will be aiming to reach the November 1 first round. National League sides join that competition at the third round stage, with the date for those fixtures being Saturday, December 13. Fixtures for the league season are released on Wednesday, July 9, a month before the league programme kicks off on Saturday, August 9.

The 23-year-old arrives at the Silverlake Stadium after the Spitfires saw off competition from EFL clubs to secure his signature. Evans will officially join the National League outfit on July 1 once his contract with Cardiff expires. Evans made 34 appearances on loan at Newport County last season and has amassed over 100 senior appearances during his career, including 12 for boyhood club Cardiff and spells with Linfield, Gateshead and Torquay United. The former Wales youth international, who came through the ranks at Cardiff from under-8 level, made his senior debut in 2021 against Nottingham Forest in the Championship. He also lifted the FA Trophy during a loan stint with Gateshead. Speaking after signing, Evans said: 'It feels amazing. I came here this morning and met everyone. Everything feels and sounds amazing. Their last league meeting came back in April 1988, when the Bluebirds ran out 4-0 winners. Fixtures and dates for Group A will be confirmed in due course, with matches set to begin later this summer. Bluebirds' 25/26 fixtures revealed Cardiff City's return to League One for the first time in over two decades begins with a high-profile home clash against Peterborough United on Saturday, August 2 (12.30pm kick-off), as Brian Barry-Murphy's side look to make a strong start in the third tier. The Bluebirds then travel to Port Vale and face home games against Rotherham United and Plymouth Argyle before the month is out, with tricky away trips to AFC. Wimbledon and Luton Town also lined up in August. Former Carlisle United prospect makes non-league switch
Former Carlisle United prospect Cameron Salkeld has made FA Trophy finalists Spennymoor Town his latest destination. The midfielder has joined the National League North club ahead of the 2025/26 season. Advertisement It follows his departure from fellow sixth-tier club Darlington. Salkeld, who came through the youth side at Carlisle and made two first-team appearances, scoring once, had been with Darlo for the last two years. Now he makes the switch to another north east outfit. Spennymoor boss Graeme Lee has welcomed the arrival of the former Blue to the Brewery Field. 'The way Cam plays the game suits us down to the ground,' said Lee in a club statement. 'I've said it numerous times that we're at our best when we play with real intensity, and Cam does that with his work rate and the distances he covers during games. Advertisement 'He is full of running, has great ability, good experience and can play in a few different roles so he's someone we're delighted to be adding to our squad for 2025/26.' Salkeld's two senior outings for Carlisle came in the EFL Trophy under Keith Curle in the 2016/17 campaign. He made his debut at 17 as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers' Under-21s in October 2016 before, a month later, coming off the bench to score in a 4-2 win over Fleetwood Town. He also impressed for United's youth team as they reached the fourth round in the same season. He moved on from Carlisle in 2018 and has since had spells at Gateshead, Greenock Morton, Ayr United and Clyde before joining Darlington in 2023. Spennymoor finished ninth in National League North last season as well as reaching the FA Trophy final, where they lost 3-0 to Aldershot Town at Wembley.
