Report: Bremen close to agreeing deal for Elversberg coach Steffen
Elversberg coach Horst Steffen gestures on the touchline during the German Bundesliga Relegation First leg soccer match between 1. FC Heidenheim and SV Elversberg at Voith-Arena. Tom Weller/dpa Elversberg coach Horst Steffen is close to be appointed Werder Bremen boss, the Deichstube portal said on Wednesday. The fan website has close contacts within the club and is widely viewed as reliable. Advertisement Steffen guided tiny Elversberg to third in the second tier with a vibrant brand of attacking football. They narrowly missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga when they conceded in stoppage time in the play-off with Heidenheim on Monday. Steffen will replace Ole Werner, who parted ways with Bremen after opting not to sign a new deal amid frictions with the board. The Northerners finished eighth in the Bundesliga season just finished. Deichstube said 56-year-old Steffen was signing a deal until 2028 and Elversberg would receive six-figure compensation. An announcement could come as early as Thursday. Germany assistant coach Sandro Wagner is set to fill the vacancy at Augsburg, while Como's Cesc Fàbregas is favourite for the RB Leipzig job. Promoted Cologne are also looking for a new coach.

Having battled back to draw 2-2 at home in the first leg, Heidenheim, who finished in 16th place in the Bundesliga, edged a spirited Elversberg, who have never played in the top flight, 4-3 on aggregate. Mathias Honsak fired Heidenheim ahead after nine minutes, latching onto a slick through ball from Scienza, who had surged forward after winning possession in midfield. Elversberg equalised in the 31st minute after a great run by Tom Zimmerschied who set up captain Robin Fellhauer in front of goal to coolly finish past the goalkeeper. The hosts thought they had gone in front two minutes after the break when Fisnik Asllani turned home from close range, but the goal was chalked off following a VAR review for offside. Despite dominating possession, Elversberg failed to find a breakthrough, and their dream of reaching the Bundesliga slipped away when Scienza capped a great team move five minutes into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations among the visiting fans. Heidenheim will play their second Bundesliga season, while VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel were relegated from the top flight. Cologne and Hamburg SV won automatic promotion to the top division. (Tom Weller/dpa via AP) HEIDENHEIM, Germany (AP) — Two overachieving clubs clashed for a place in the Bundesliga and neither could strike a decisive blow. Top-tier Heidenheim and second-division Elversberg drew 2-2 in the first leg of their relegation/promotion playoff on Thursday, leaving the contest finely poised before the second leg in Elversberg on Monday. Advertisement 'Everything open,' Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said. Heidenheim, which was only promoted to the top division in 2023 after an unlikely ascent through the lower leagues, finished third from bottom in the Bundesliga this season when it also had to contend with European competition after its eighth-place finish last year. Elversberg, which was still playing at fourth-tier level three years ago, finished third in the second division to earn its shot in the playoff. It was a duel between modest clubs with the longest-serving coaches in German professional soccer. Schmidt took over in Heidenheim on Sept. 17, 2007, while his Elversberg counterpart Horst Steffen took charge on Oct. 29, 2018. Advertisement Steffen led the team from the fourth-tier regional league, clinching promotion to the third division in 2022, then to the second as third-division champion a year later, before earning the shot at Bundesliga promotion this year. Heidenheim made the better start and missed good chances before Lukas Petkov struck for the visitors in the 18th minute, and Fisnik Asllani finished off a well-worked team move to make it 2-0 in the 42nd. Omar Haktab Traoré thought he'd pulled one back for Heidenheim before the break, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check found an offside player involved in the buildup. Schmidt reacted with three changes at the interval. Advertisement Tim Siersleben pulled a goal back on a rebound in the 62nd, and Mathias Honsak equalized three minutes later. The home team finished strongly as the visitors tired, but neither team could claim an advantage before the second leg in Elversberg. ___ AP soccer:

Soccer Football - Bundesliga - Bundesliga - Relegation Playoff - First Leg - 1. FC Heidenheim v SV Elversberg - Voith-Arena, Heidenheim, Germany - May 22, 2025 1. FC Heidenheim's Mathias Honsak scores their second goal REUTERS/Heiko Becker HEIDENHEIM, Germany (Reuters) - Bundesliga club Heidenheim scored twice in three minutes in the second half to come from two goals down and snatch a 2-2 draw against visitors Elversberg in the relegation playoff first leg on Thursday. Elversberg, third in the second division, stunned Heidenheim to go 2-0 up by halftime thanks to goals from Lukas Petkov in the 18th minute and Fisnik Asllani, the team's top scorer this season. Heidenheim, who finished in 16th place in the Bundesliga, had a goal disallowed on the stroke of halftime and hit the woodwork early in the second half before Tim Siersleben pulled one back in the 62nd. Just two minutes later Mathias Honsak drew Heidenheim level, scoring on the rebound as the hosts got 14 efforts towards goal in a strong second half. The return leg in Elversberg is on Monday.
