Nantes fires coach Kombouaré after struggle to stay in Ligue 1
NANTES, France (AP) — Nantes fired coach Antoine Kombouaré on Tuesday after a difficult season where the club battled to stay in Ligue 1. Nantes finished 13th in the 18-team league and top-flight survival was not certain until the final round. 'FC Nantes announces the end of its collaboration with Antoine Kombouaré, head coach of the professional team,' Nantes posted on X. 'The club sincerely thanks Antoine Kombouaré and his staff for their professionalism and dedication.' The 61-year-old Kombouaré had one year left on his contract. He remains a popular figure at the club, having saved it from relegation in 2021 and winning the French Cup in 2022 — the club's first trophy in 21 years. Kombouaré had a difficult relationship with Nantes president Waldemir Kita, who fired him in 2023 and re-hired him amid another relegation scrap the following year.

Nantes consider parting ways with Antoine Kombouaré
FC Nantes once again secured their safety in Ligue 1, but once again, they did it the hard way. Their safety was ensured on the final day of the season thanks to a 3-0 win over already-relegated Montpellier HSC. The three points saw Les Canaris jump to 13th, however, they also finish just three points ahead of 16th-placed Stade de Reims, who will compete in the relegation play-off later this month. At best, it has been another middling season, and L'Équipe understands that Nantes plan to part ways with manager Antoine Kombouaré. The club's management wished to do the same back in December, too, but could not find a suitable replacemnt. However, Kombouaré is now close to the exit door at Nantes. Les Canaris are already lining up replacements, according to L'Équipe. Pierre Sage, out of work since leaving Olympique Lyonnais earlier this season, is a target, as is Luis Castro, who failed to bring USL Dunkerque up to Ligue 1. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Nantes interested in bringing in former Lyon manager Pierre Sage
FC Nantes could make a managerial change at the end of the season. Les Canaris are not yet assured of safety and currently hover just three points above the relegation play-off spot with five games remaining. They have a game in hand on those around them, against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. There has been talk about the managerial position for much of the season at Nantes. Antoine Kombouaré came in at the end of last season to save the club from relegation, however, there has been a temptation to twist. Waldemar Kita attempted to replace Kombouré during the winter break, however, could not get deals over the line for either Habib Beye or Sergio Conceiçao. Advertisement Mohamed Toubache-Ter understands that Nantes are still on the look out for a new manager and could make a move for Pierre Sage.
