EdUHK Prof Mette Hjort Champions Cultures of Care for a Flourishing Hong Kong

[The content of this article has been produced by our advertising partner.] In a flourishing community, care should extend beyond interpersonal relationships, manifesting across various societal domains including film, healthcare, culture, and education. As an expert in cultures of care, Prof Mette Hjort, Chair Professor of Film and Media Studies of the Faculty of Humanities (FHM) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), challenges prevailing norms that often prioritise productivity and commercial outcomes. Through her groundbreaking research on cultures of care, Prof Hjort explores how care can be thoughtfully integrated into motion pictures, healthcare, culture, and education to foster a more caring Hong Kong, generating ethical, cultural, social, environmental, and health benefits. As Hong Kong increasingly embraces care-centred approaches across various sectors, Prof Hjort's research aims to contribute meaningfully to a more flourishing society where care becomes a fundamental value, rather than an afterthought. Current Landscape: Public Discourse on Cultures of Care Hjort notes that conversations around cultures of care in Hong Kong are steadily gaining momentum, with pioneering organisations in the creative arts sector leading the way. "The public discourse on this topic is increasingly robust in the city," she observes, highlighting Tai Kwun's significant community engagement initiatives—particularly their 2025 project With a Song in My Heart. The project thoughtfully unites musicians, cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers through expressive jazz performances to share their challenges and experiences on the journey of battling cancer. "While Hong Kong acknowledges the value of creative arts for wellbeing, we haven't yet developed a comprehensive public understanding that cultural interventions can sometimes serve people's needs more effectively than pharmacological approaches," she reflects. "The recognition of culture's healing potential is growing, but considerable work remains to fully integrate this understanding into our healthcare approaches and public consciousness."

90s soap bombshell hasn't aged a day as she returns to show TWENTY years after quitting

She's hardly changed since her debut at the age of 19 in 1993 TIMELESS BEAUTY 90s soap bombshell hasn't aged a day as she returns to show TWENTY years after quitting A 90s soap bombshell hasn't aged a day as she returned to the the show she was on, twenty years after quitting. The 52-year-old actress is best known for playing Annalise Hartman on the Aussie soap Neighbours 1993 and 1996. Advertisement 4 A 90s soap bombshell hasn't aged a day as she returned to the the show she was on, twenty years after quitting Credit: X 4 The 52-year-old actress is best known for playing Annalise Hartman Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Kimberley Davies starred in Neighbours for three years in the 90s and went on to become a huge sex symbol from that time. The star appeared on various magazines including Loaded, FHM and Maxim. And it looks like the star has barely aged, as she reprised her role as devious Annalise. She's hardly changed since her debut at the age of 19 in 1993. Advertisement In fact, Kimberley looks as glamorous as ever in a short clip shared on her social media. The actress tells fans: 'You might remember me as Annalise Hartman. 'So being definitely brought up a lot of memories, makes me feel really old, I must say. 'But so great to see some familiar faces and everyone's just so lovely and in a way even though I feel old it's kind of like I never left.' Advertisement The star also teased what Neighbours fans might be able to expect from her character on the show, continuing: 'Last time I was here, Annalise was doing docos and she was making a documentary about the history of Ramsay Street, but she's back this time with a different job shall we say... and [she has] a couple of new conflicts due to the new job. Neighbours star hits back after being labelled a nepo-baby - can you guess her 90s rock legend dad? 'And she has a lot going on in her life... so she's got some stories to tell.' Fans of the Aussie soap have been left delighted by the comeback, with one person writing: 'I absolutely loved Annalise's return episode. So many callbacks! So much history!' A second added: 'It's a great coup getting Kimberley back on Neighbours.' Advertisement After her stint in the Australian soap, she appeared in various shows such as Pacific Palisades, Friends and Ally McBeal. Neighbours stars who made it big The long-running Aussie soap has launched the careers of some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Here are some of the Neighbours alums who went on to make it big after starring on the soap... Kylie Minogue Before she hit the big time with her music career, Kylie shot to fame playing Charlene Mitchell on Neighbours. Shortly after her arrival, Kylie began an on and off-screen romance with co-star Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson, which gained the couple an army of adoring fans. Jason Donovan After his stint as Scott, singer and actor Jason became an international popstar and had his pick acting of roles. He moved to the U.K., married, had children and has since starred in over a dozen West End show, most notably Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat. Alan Dale New Zealand born actor Alan was one of Neighbours 12 original cast members having made his debut as Jim Robinson on the soap's first episode on 18 March 1985. As the head of the Robinson clan, widower Jim lived at Number 26 Ramsay Street with his children Paul, Julie, Scott and Lucy, and was a real anchor in the community. He stayed with the show for eight years, before his character was killed off in dramatic scenes aired in 1993 but which still reverberate through the soap to this day. Margot Robbie Way before she was Barbie or Harley Quinn, Margot was best known as Ramsay Street resident Donna Freedman. Her notable storylines included her marriage to Ringo Brown and becoming a young widow following his tragic death. After three years she bid farewell to the soap and Australia with a plan to make a name for herself in Hollywood which she did when she bagged the role of Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. Jesse Spencer Jesse rocked up on Ramsay street in 1994 with the rest of the Kennedy clan. He stayed for five years, literally growing up in front of the camera, but in 2000 felt it was time to spread his wings and head for Hollywood. It was certainly a smart move as he went on to bag leading roles in popular shows like House and Chicago Fire. Russell Crowe New Zealand-native Russell had a brief arc on Neighbours, appearing in four episodes of the soap 1987 as Kenny Larkin, the former cellmate of Street resident Henry Ramsay. The role obviously got him noticed though because he quickly went on to become a fully-fledged Hollywood A-lister, winning the Best Actor Oscar for his standout performance as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator. Kimberley has also taken part in reality shows such as Celebrity Circus, I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Dancing with the Stars. She was last on our screens when she took part in Neighbours' 20th anniversary special in 2005. She didn't appeared in the Neighbours 2022 finale which saw some of the show's biggest characters return to Ramsay Street. Advertisement Kimberley was apparently asked by producers, but she declined, according to Private Sydney. But now she's firmly back on the soap, and fans are delighted. The star is married to her husband Jason Harvey. The pair, who tied the knot in 1997, share three kids - Isabella, Josh and Ashton. But this week The Sun revealed why Melanie Sykes has ditched fame to focus on the quiet life in Yorkshire, where she spends her days painting nude pictures of herself. Here, we look at what some of the sexiest stars of yesteryear are up to now, from successful TV careers to tragic health battles… Dani Behr Nothing summed up the 90s quite like pop culture show The Word. And front and centre was Dani Behr, the gorgeous blonde presenter with the husky voice who joined the programme in 1992 at just 17 years old. Following her tenure on the show, Dani embarked on a brief but high profile relationship with Manchester United star Ryan Giggs and was later axed from CBBC's The Saturday Show, after making risque comments to a lads mag about having 'seedy' sex in an NCP car park. Dani, 55, ditched the UK in the early noughties to live in the States to work as a luxury real estate agent in Los Angeles, selling million dollar houses. Now a mum of two, she's kept herself ingrained in showbusiness, and has just announced that a new show which she created, called 'Members Only: Palm Beach,' has been picked up by Netflix. It will follow 'a group of glamorous women navigating America's most exclusive social circle.' Melinda Messenger With her tumbling blonde locks, cheeky grin and flawless figure, Melinda was the ultimate pin up and one of the 90s most iconic glamour girls. I was a Page 3 girl and popped up in James Bond film... then got addicted to heroin The Sun labelled her 'The Girl of the Thrillenium' and she was dubbed the new Eva Herzigova as she shot to fame thanks to posing in her undies for a double glazing advert. Nowadays, things are drastically different for 54 year old Mel, who has three children and lives a peaceful life in the Berkshire countryside. She likes to plant flowers, walk her dog and is a fully trained psychotherapist. Melinda, who regularly appears as a guest at wellness festivals across the country, was back in the news recently to argue her 21 year old daughter, Evie, was not a 'nepo baby'. 21 Melinda Messenger emerging from a swimming pool onto a Sun towel back in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Melinda Messenger at Octopus Park in Tenerife back in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Legendary Page 3 girl hasn't aged a day as she poses in swimsuit Credit: instagram/ Reports claimed Evie was going into modelling, having been given a leg up by her famous mum. But Mel chimed into the debate insisting 'She isn't a model, though, to be fair she could be if she wanted to, but I am her mum, so I might be a tad biased.' Keeley Hazell As glamour girls go, few were as popular as Keeley at her peak. 21 Keeley Hazel, 21 with 'Come on England' roses back in 2007 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Keeley featured in practically every lads mag going Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Keeley turned to acting appearing in Hollywood films Horrible Bosses 2 with Jennifer Aniston Credit: Getty Images - Getty Not only did she feature in practically every lads mag going, but her Official Keeley Calendar 2007 sold 30,000 copies in its first couple of days, making it one of the biggest sellers of that year. And this was a time when celeb calendars were big business. Famed for her doe eyed girl next door looks, Keeley turned to acting after modelling, appearing in Hollywood films Horrible Bosses 2 with Jennifer Aniston and Like Crazy, alongside Jennifer Lawrence. But it's her turn as evil chairman Rupert Mannion's wife, Bex, in Ted Lasso that has really put her on the map. She's also one of the show's writers. With her tongue firmly in cheek, Keeley, 38, will release her first book next month, a collection of essays entitled 'Everyone's Seen My Tits.' Jodie Marsh She's a long way from her sexy pin up past, but Jodie Marsh was once one of the hottest women in showbiz. 21 Jodie Marsh at the FHM 100 Sexiest Women event Credit: Rex Features 21 Jodie Marsh became famous for her special bra outfit Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Jodie recently won a battle against her local council in Essex Credit: John McLellan Famed for her daring, outrageous outfits and constant comparisons to fellow model Katie Price, Jodie was a mainstay at celeb events and on reality shows in the early 00s. However, a lot has changed and Jodie, 46, now runs an animal sanctuary called Fripps Farm, where she keeps everything from emus to lemurs. She recently won a battle against her local council in Essex to keep the animals, but last month the former glamour girl begged fans to donate money to her project, after learning the farm's social media pages had been taken down. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Jodie could be seen cuddling an emu and pleading, 'We are working on getting them back up. Please help by donating at Sarah Cawood Channel 4's The Girlie Show, famous for launching the career of the original ladette, Sara Cox, also catapulted Sara Cawood to fame, and she too became a fixture on the walls of teen boys across the country. 21 Heather Suttie & Sarah Cawood presenters for the BBC's Live & Kicking pictured in Ibzia Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 21 Sarah Cawood at the 2004 Kerrang! Following a battle with breast cancer in 2022, Sarah told The Sun of her regrets, saying 'they were honestly the best boobs — better than Denise Van Outen's, I'd say. So I should have got them out.' These days Sarah, 52, has stepped away from the limelight to focus on her health and her two children. In April she shared a post which said, ''I need to stop drinking. Like stop completely.' She also reflected on her former TV career saying, 'sometimes I wonder what went wrong, but I'm here now so I'm going to make the most of it, however, that looks.' Gail Porter Was there a more iconic image from lad culture in the 90s than the naked body of Gail Porter, projected onto the Houses of Parliament? Arguably not. 21 Cover girl challenge The front cover of FHM magazine showing Gail Porter in the nude Credit: FHM Magazine 21 Gail Porter promoting a motor car in London Credit: Rex 21 Gail Porter, patron of a Scottish charity, at the launch of an affordable lending program Credit: Tom Farmer However, that 1999 stunt for men's magazine FHM, proved to be the beginning of the end for Gail's successful glamour and TV career. The 54 year old, who was famed for presenting shows like Live and Kicking and Top of The Pops, said she wasn't aware of what had happened and later claimed she was never paid for the shoot, despite the publicity helping FHM sell more than one million copies within just two months. Since then Gail has famously lost her hair due to alopecia, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and fought a battle against drink and drugs and bankruptcy. She was also sectioned under the mental health act in 2011, after texting her then boyfriend to say she was suicidal. Last month Gail, who shares a daughter, Honey, with Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave, stepped out at the British LGBT Awards ceremony wearing a long blonde wig, leaving fans praising her 'transformation'. Nell McAndrew Gorgeous Nell was always destined for big things, having started her career as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. 21 Model Nell McAndrew in red lingerie and a white fur coat in 2000 Credit: PA:Press Association 21 Nell McAndrew at a charity fashion show Credit: Capital Pictures 21 Now Nell, 51, spends her time as a fitness guru Credit: Instagram She was the Lara Croft model for Tomb Raider when the computer game was released in 1998 and since then was a mainstay in men's mags such as Maxim, Loaded and even Playboy. She was famously named Rear of the Year in 2005 and had a successful run presenting shows such as The Big Breakfast and It's A Knockout. She famously 'wed' gay pal Dale Winton in a televised ceremony, which was later revealed to be part of a BBC documentary. Now Nell, 51, spends her time as a fitness guru, who has run several marathons and written a book called Nell McAndrew's Guide to Running.
