IIT Delhi Conducts 56th Convocation; 1048 BTech, 530 PhD Degrees Awarded

IIT Delhi held its 56th Convocation ceremony today, August 2, 2025. A total of 2764 students were awarded degrees and diplomas at the event. Among the graduating students, 735 were female. Additionally, 43 international students from around 20 countries received degrees. The youngest graduate was 24-year-old Chandan Godara, who completed his in Civil Engineering, while the oldest was 63-year-old Gopal Krishan Taneja, who earned a PhD. Ankit Mondal, a in Computer Science and Engineering, was honoured with the President's Gold Medal for achieving the highest CGPA among and Dual Degree programme graduates. Jaskaran Singh Sodhi, a in Materials Science and Engineering, received the Director's Gold Medal for being the best all-rounder among the and Dual Degree programme graduates. Devinder Kumar, an in Structural Engineering, was awarded the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. This prestigious medal is given to a student judged to have the best general proficiency, including character and conduct, academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and social service, among all graduating students. Two students, Shreyansh Gupta ( in Thermal Engineering) and Soumili Chakraborti ( in Polymer Science and Technology), received Perfect Ten Gold Medals for securing a CGPA of 10 out of 10 in their PG programmes. The Institute Silver Medals were awarded to 16 students for obtaining the highest CGPA in their respective programmes. Ph.D. — 530 Master of Science (Research) — 62 Master of Technology (M. Dr. Thomas is presently Vice Chancellor of the Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE), Kanyakumari. The convocation ceremony was presided over by Harish Salve, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIT Delhi. While addressing the graduating students, Chief Guest Dr. Tessy Thomas said, 'It is with immense pride and a deep sense of honour that I stand before you today at the 56th Convocation of IIT Delhi—a cradle of innovation, knowledge, and nation-building. You have reached the culmination of years of rigorous study, countless hours of experimentation, and sleepless nights of coding, designing, analysing, innovating, and aiming high. At IIT Delhi, you have mastered the principles of science and engineering and cultivated values like curiosity, resilience, and the courage that define a global technologist." Addressing the graduating students, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, 'We enjoyed having you on the campus. As you step out of the comfort zone of this campus into the real world, you will engage with a world of challenges and opportunities. Remember that your learning continues. We have equipped you with skills, tools, and technologies and the ability to think on your feet. Approach every new situation with humility and a willingness to learn. IIT Delhi awards record 530 PhDs at 56th Convocation; 'Missile Woman' Dr Tessy Thomas addresses graduates
NEW DELHI: IIT Delhi held its 56th Convocation on Saturday, celebrating the achievements of 2,764 graduating students, including a record 530 PhD recipients. The event was graced by chief guest Dr. Tessy Thomas, FNAE —renowned as India's 'Missile Woman,' currently the Vice Chancellor of Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education. Harish Salve, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, presided over the ceremony. This year marked the first batch of graduates from the B Tech in Energy Engineering and three postgraduate programmes—Interdisciplinary M Tech in Robotics, and MS(R) in VLSI Design and Artificial Intelligence. Among the graduates were 735 women and 43 international students from around 20 countries. Chandan Godara (20), B Tech in Civil Engineering, and Gopal Krishan Taneja (63), PhD, were the youngest and oldest graduates respectively.
