Skin tags vs warts vs moles: How to tell the difference
Dr. Sneha Shah highlights the differences between skin tags, warts, and moles, common skin growths often found on the face and eyelids. Skin tags are soft and harmless, while warts are viral and contagious. Moles, though usually benign, carry a risk of developing into skin cancer. As an oculoplastic and facial aesthetic surgeon, I often encounter several patients who are concerned about small growths on the face and eyelid region. While some of these are harmless, some may require medical attention or removal for cosmetic or functional reasons. Among these common concerns are- Skin tags, warts and moles, which are three seemingly similar concept that in reality are quite different from each other in terms of origin, appearance and risk. Having a proper understanding of how to differentiate among them helps in making informed decisions about the treatment and removal. 1. Skin Tags: Soft, Harmless, and Common What they are: Skin Tags also known as Acrochordons are soft, benign skin growths that develop in areas where there is friction between two skin surfaces or with clothing- like the neck, eyelids, underarms and groin. They are usually flesh- coloured or slightly darker and hang off the skin by a thin stalk (pendunculated). How they feel and look: They are usually small, soft, and movable Often shaped like a tiny balloon on a stalk Usually painless unless irritated by friction or jewellery Why they appear: They are commonly found in middle- aged or overweight individuals and those with diabetes. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can also trigger them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo Treatment: Although, skin tags are mostly harmless and don't require removal until and unless they are irritated or are cosmetically bothersome. Removal methods include- cryotherapy (freezing), snip excision, or electrocautery, all of which are quick and in- clinic procedures. 2. Warts: Caused by a Virus What they are: Caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), warts are rough, raised growths. They are contagious and can spread through skin- to- skin contact or by sharing personal items like razors or towels. How they feel and look: They are rough, firm, and grainy texture May appear grayish, brown, or flesh-colored Often have tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) on the surface Why they appear: Warts are commonly found in children and in people with weakened immune systems. It can develop anywhere, but are particularly bothersome around the eyes or face due to aesthetic reasons. Treatment: Since warts are viral, treatment aims at removing the growth and controlling the recurrence. Treatment options include cryotherapy, laser ablation, topical acids, or electrosurgery. In delicate areas like the eyelids, surgical excision by an oculoplastic surgeon helps in ensuring the safety and minimizes the risk of scarring. 3. Moles: Pigmented and Potentially Risky What they are: Nevi or moles refer to pigmented skin cells that cluster together. They are mostly benign but some can also develop into melanoma a type of skin cancer especially if they change in size, colour or shape. How they feel and look: Usually brown or black, but can be flesh-colored or pink May be flat or raised Can be round, oval, or irregular in shape Why they appear: Moles can be present from birth or can develop due to sun exposure and genetic factors. They usually appear during childhood or adolescence but can change over time. For understanding it's warning signs, we follow the ABCDE rule which is- asymmetry, Border irregularity, color change or multiple colours, a diameter over 6mm, changing shape, size and symptoms which can cause itching and bleeding. Treatment: While benign moles do not necessarily require removal, suspicious ones should be examined by a dermatologist or surgeon. Excision with biopsy acts as the golden standard for diagnosis. When on the eyelids or face, precision is essential for preserving aesthetics and function making oculoplastic evaluation especially valuable. Conclusion While skin tags, warts and moles might appear similar, their causes and implications vary significantly. In my practice, especially when these growths are on or around the delicate eye area, accurate diagnosis is extremely crucial not just for aesthetic purposes but for overall skin health. If you are unsure about a skin growth or notice any changes, make sure that you seek a professional evaluation. It's always better to be cautious about your skin and more importantly your eyes, as they deserve expert care. By Dr. Sneha Shah, Oculoplastic & Facial Aesthetic Surgeon

India-Australia trade pact: India rejects demand for tariff cuts on dairy and wine; second phase of BTA delayed
India has rejected Australia's demand for deeper tariff concessions on dairy and alcoholic beverages, delaying the second phase of a proposed bilateral trade pact, news agency Reuters reported citing two Indian government sources. The countries signed an interim deal in 2022 that reduced tariffs on a wide range of goods. However, talks on a full-scale Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) covering goods, services and visas have stalled, with dairy and wine emerging as key sticking points, the sources said. 'There is no question of agreeing to Australia's demands for further tariff cuts on dairy and wine,' said a senior Indian official directly involved in the negotiations. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cited concerns over potential impacts on millions of Indian farmers, the domestic wine industry, and grape growers. Australia has been pressing India to reduce duties more aggressively. Under the existing interim deal, tariffs on Australian wine priced above $5 per 750ml bottle were reduced from 150% to 100%, with a gradual target of 50% over ten years. For wine priced above $15, tariffs were cut to 75%, with a target of 25% over the same period. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo Australia now seeks to lower the price thresholds at which cuts apply and accelerate the reductions. 'We'd like to see a reduction in the price at which tariff reductions kick in and a speeding up of those reductions,' said Lee McLean, CEO of industry group Australian Grape & Wine. He noted that high taxes mean even relatively affordable Australian wines, priced at A$10–15 at home, can retail for over A$100 ($65.77) in India. India's resistance stems in part from growing opposition by farmer groups and politicians in Gujarat — Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state — and Maharashtra, a major grape-producing region. The Rs 2.9 lakh crore ($35 billion) alcoholic beverages industry has also opposed making further concessions. On dairy, Australia has sought better access for products such as cheese, high-protein whey concentrate, lactose and processed goods, which currently face Indian tariffs between 20% and 30%. But India's large and politically sensitive dairy sector remains a barrier. 'Current tariffs are prohibitive,' said Karl Ellis of Dairy Australia. He added that while mainstream dairy exports to India are unlikely, niche items like high-protein whey and select cheeses could help Australia tap into the $30–40 million Indian market, which is now largely served by European suppliers. Despite the stalemate, officials said both sides are still committed to advancing the pact. India is open to reducing tariffs on industrial and non-agricultural goods, while pushing for greater access to Australia's services market and visa quotas, a second Indian official said. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs said negotiations remain backed by both prime ministers and that a completed CECA would enhance bilateral trade and build a more resilient economic partnership. Crocodile alert! City's residents turn rescuers amid monsoon surge
Vadodara: When a crocodile recently entered a residential colony in Sayajigunj, local resident Abhishek Dhanavade didn't panic. Instead, he calmly approached the reptile, covered its eyes with a cloth, and guided it into a corner—preventing any harm to residents. Dhanavade isn't a trained wildlife rescuer, but like many Barodians, he has taken a crash course in crocodile handling. With reptiles from Vishwamitri River, bisecting the city, emerging frequently during monsoon - sometimes in the most unexpected places like kitchens and parkings - an increasing number of Barodians are coming forward to handle the situation on their own. "Last year, dozens of crocodiles were spotted near our colony at night. Rescue teams can't always reach in time, so I decided to get basic training," said 25-year-old Dhanavade. Crocodile rescues are often overstretched as they are flooded with calls due to crocodiles crawling out in public places. So, many residential societies, especially those in the low-lying areas in the vicinity of the river, have been undergoing informal training in handling the reptiles. Wildlife activist Hemant Vadhwana, who regularly conducts training sessions , said increasing number of people are now requesting lessons. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Investors Are Buying These Dubai Apartments—Here's Why Binghatti Developers FZE Explore Undo "We educate people on crocodile behaviour and safety. But our primary advice is not to attempt rescue in abscence of experts," Vadhwana told TOI. In just three months of the last monsoon season, nearly 100 crocodiles were rescued from across Vadodara, with some found far from the river—like a baby crocodile that entered a kitchen in Karelibaug and another spotted under a parked car in Bil. Arvind Pawar of Wildlife Rescue Trust (WRT) said crocodile sightings have surged even in densely populated areas. "That's why we conduct awareness training and demonstrations. These sessions help people stay calm and make rescue efforts easier. This also gives us more time to reach the spot." The forest department has also stepped in, launching awareness campaigns and putting up warning signboards in vulnerable zones. "Despite being large and seemingly slow, crocodiles can strike with alarming speed and cause serious injuries," said animal activist Neha Patel.

Man sentenced to 10-year RI for sexual assault of minor girl in Thane
Thane: A 28-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined Rs 20,000 for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2018. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge and Special Pocso Judge D.S. Deshmukh. The crime occurred when the convicted man, then 23, befriended the victim near her school and persuaded her to accompany him and a friend to the friend's house. While the friend was in the kitchen, he forcibly kissed the victim, removed her clothing, and committed penetrative sexual assault despite her resistance. The frightened girl managed to push him away and returned home, where she confided in her mother after a neighbour alerted the family about her departure with two boys, prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale informed. The case was filed at Shrinagar police station, Thane, on Nov 2, 2018, leading to the arrest of both accused. The main accused was in judicial custody since January 2020, while his co-accused was released on bail. A seized condom packet at the scene demonstrated premeditated intent. The main accused was convicted under the Pocso Act, Indian Penal Code sections for kidnapping and sexual assault, and the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, as the victim belonged to a Scheduled Caste community. However, the co-accused was acquitted after the court found no evidence of his knowledge or involvement in the crime. During sentencing, the judge pointed out the serious nature of crimes against children and noted that the accused exploited his friendship with the victim. The Rs 20,000 fine will be paid to the victim as compensation, with the case referred to the District Legal Services Authority for additional compensation consideration.
