'We will plan carefully against Amir'

Lahore Qalandars' aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman on Monday, praised Quetta Gladiators' Mohammad Amir as an 'excellent' bowler and vowed to sharpen his team's tactics when they face him on the field on May 1. Speaking to the media here on Monday, Fakhar underscored Amir's ability to excel in any bowling condition and stressed that beating him will require a full-team effort rather than reliance on a single star. "Everyone knows Amir's class - he is a top-quality bowler who performs well in all conditions," Fakhar said. "We will plan carefully on match day and execute our strategy. But in cricket, one player alone cannot win for his side." Fakhar also expressed satisfaction with his team's performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 thus far, stating that they are happy with the direction the two-time champions are heading. "We have won three and lost three. In cricket, no matter how much you achieve, you are never fully satisfied. We are happy with the direction our team is heading," said Fakhar. "We are giving every opponent a tough time and our players know how to turn the game around. Winning and losing are part of the sport, but we remain positive," he added. He also welcomed the grassy pitches at the Gaddafi Stadium, arguing that seam and bounce are essential to maintain balance between bat and ball. "Flat tracks leave the ball low, yet teams still manage 170–180 runs, so the issue was not big. These grass-covered wickets will help bowlers and ultimately strengthen our cricket," he explained. Fakhar added that such wickets favour the Qalandars' strengths since their attack is built around fast bowling. "When you play many matches on the same surface, you adapt fast. We are fired up and ready to deliver in Lahore," he added. Fakhar praised the fans for their unwavering support. "It is great that wherever the Qalandars play—Karachi, Rawalpindi or Lahore—the crowds come out to watch us. Their support means a lot to us," he thanked.

Two HBL PSL ties to be rescheduled

Multan Sultans are at the bottom of the table having lost five out of six matches they have played this season in the HBL PSL 10. Photo: PCB The HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 schedule has likely been revised following a request from the tournament's broadcasters, resulting in changes to two matches that were originally scheduled to take place in Multan. The match between Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings, initially set for May 1, will now be held on May 6 at Multan Cricket Stadium. Similarly, the encounter between Sultans and Quetta Gladiators, originally planned for May 10, has been moved to May 11. Both matches will now be played as night fixtures under lights. Reports suggest that these changes were made at the request of the broadcasters, who faced logistical challenges. The PSL management has cooperated by adjusting the schedule accordingly. One possible reason for the rescheduling could be the expulsion of 23 members from the HBL PSL broadcasting team, following the rise in diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and India. Although there were discussions about moving the matches from Multan to Lahore, the venue has remained unchanged, with only the dates and timings adjusted. Multan Cricket Stadium will continue to host the games as originally planned. As for the ongoing tournament, three-time PSL champions Islamabad United are currently at the top of the points table, having won all five of their matches, with 10 points. Two-time champions Lahore Qalandars are in second place, with three wins and three defeats from six games, earning 6 points. Karachi Kings are in third, tied with Lahore Qalandars in terms of wins and defeats, but with a lower net run rate of -0.217. Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators occupy the fourth and fifth spots, each with two wins and 4 points. Multan Sultans are at the bottom of the table, with one win and five losses from six matches, securing just 2 points. It is worth mentioning here that Daryl Mitchell delivered a match-winning performance as Lahore Qalandars secured a five-wicket victory over bottom-placed Multan Sultans at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday in the ongoing PSL 10. Chasing a competitive target of 186, the Qalandars reached the finish line with one over to spare, earning their third win of the season. Lahore had a shaky start as opener Mohammad Naeem fell early to Josh Little with only 12 runs on the board. Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique then added 33 runs before Fakhar was dismissed by Mohammad Hasnain after the powerplay. Fakhar scored a handy 28 off 22 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Shafique continued to build the innings and formed a 49-run stand with Daryl Mitchell. However, Multan's Ubaid Shah struck twice in one over, removing Shafique for 34 and Sam Billings for a duck, pushing Qalandars to 95/4 in 12 overs. From there, Mitchell and Sikandar Raza took control. The pair counterattacked brilliantly, adding 89 runs for the fifth wicket. Mitchell played a classy knock of 64 runs off 38 balls, smashing four fours and four sixes, before being dismissed in the 19th over. Raza stayed unbeaten on 40 from just 21 balls, hitting two fours and four sixes to guide Lahore to victory. For Multan, Ubaid Shah was the most effective bowler with two wickets. Hasnain, Akif Javed, and Josh Little claimed one wicket each. Earlier, Multan Sultans posted 185/3 after being put in to bat. Their innings was powered by a 115-run unbeaten partnership between captain Mohammad Rizwan and Kamran Ghulam. Yasir Khan gave the team an early boost with 24 off 18 balls, but Qalandars' bowlers kept things tight in the middle overs. Rizwan anchored the innings with an unbeaten 76 off 48 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and three sixes. Ghulam supported well with 52* off 31, striking two fours and four sixes. For Lahore, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Curran, and Haris Rauf each picked up a wicket. With this win, Qalandars moved a step closer to playoff contention, while the Sultans continue to struggle at the bottom of the table.

Fakhar shares insights from training session after injury

Millions of home fans are eagerly awaiting return of opener Fakhar Zaman to top level cricket after his injury. PHOTO: AFP Left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman, on Thursday, opened up about his first training session since recovering from the injury that cut short his ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. The injury occurred during Pakistan's opening match against New Zealand, forcing Fakhar to withdraw from the tournament just ahead of their crucial match against India on February 23 in Dubai. Fakhar sustained the injury on the second ball of Pakistan's opening match in the Champions Trophy. He had sprinted from mid-off to stop a shot from Will Young, which was driven through the covers off a Shaheen Afridi delivery. In an attempt to stop the boundary, Fakhar's knees got stuck in the outfield, causing him to fall in visible pain. Despite the injury, Fakhar continued to bat for Pakistan, managing to score 24 runs off 41 balls before being dismissed by Michael Bracewell. Subsequent scans revealed an oblique tear, which led to his unfortunate withdrawal from the rest of the tournament. After his Champions Trophy heartbreak, Fakhar has begun his preparations for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, which is set to start on April 11. Fakhar will represent Lahore Qalandars in tournament. Reflecting on his first training session post-injury, Fakhar admitted that it was challenging at first but he gradually got back into the groove. "The first day was good. Since I batted for almost one and a half months, it felt a bit tough, but it was good overall," Fakhar said in a video statement shared by the Lahore Qalandars on their social media channels. He further explained, "It felt awkward as if I am batting without pads, but again, it was just the first day, and we have eight to nine days more, so I am hopeful of getting back into the rhythm." Fakhar also outlined his goals for the PSL, emphasizing his desire to be the leading run-scorer and help his team win the tournament. "Look, my personal goals always remain the same and that is to be the best batter of the tournament and to make my team win the final. So, my goal is the same this year," he said. "I will try my best to help my team win matches and propel them into the final," Fakhar added, expressing his determination to overcome the injury setback and deliver strong performances in the upcoming season.

Fakhar Zaman denies retirement rumours

Listen to article Pakistan's opening batter Fakhar Zaman has dismissed recent reports about his retirement, calling them 'baseless.' Fakhar made his comeback to the national team during the recent home tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa. However, he suffered an injury during Pakistan's ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 match against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19. While fielding in the first over, Fakhar fell awkwardly and was immediately taken off the field for medical evaluation. Although he briefly returned, he had to leave again, and later scans revealed an oblique tear, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament. Imam-ul-Haq was named as Fakhar's replacement. Following his exit from the tournament, rumours began circulating about his retirement, but Fakhar has denied them, saying, 'There is no truth in the retirement news. I will be fully fit and join the team soon.' Fakhar is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore and is focused on making a strong comeback. Since debuting in 2017, Fakhar has played three Test matches, 86 ODIs, and 92 T20Is for Pakistan, scoring a total of 5,691 runs across formats, including 11 centuries and 30 half-centuries.
