Cubs-Cardinals Trade Idea Sends $275 Million Slugger to Chicago
The Chicago Cubs started the season with Matt Shaw at third base, but the top prospect was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after hitting .172 with a .535 OPS in his first 18 Major League Baseball games. Since then, multiple infielders have taken their turn at third, with Jon Berti, Vidal Brujan, Justin Turner, Gage Workman, and Nicky Lopez all receiving an opportunity. Advertisement Despite the Cubs' offense being just one run behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (257) for most runs scored in the league, there's potential for the front office to look for an offensive upgrade at the hot corner while Shaw improves his game in the minors. Garret Kerman of Clutch Points believes the Cubs' options for players they could target in a trade may be limited. One candidate Kerman does not rule out is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. "For the Cubs, the fit is obvious. Their infield defense and offensive production at third base have lagged behind the rest of the roster, and adding Arenado would instantly transform a weakness into a strength," Kerman wrote about how a Cubs trade for Arenado could benefit the team. "Pairing Arenado with Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner would give Chicago arguably the best defensive infield in baseball, while his bat would lengthen a lineup already featuring Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki." St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (28) fields a ground ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the sixth inning at Busch Curry-Imagn Images In the trade idea, the Cardinals receive three prospects: Second baseman James Triantos, right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, and right fielder Kevin Alcantara. The package of players the Cubs trade in this hypothetical deal is steep, but that may be the price point to acquire a future Hall of Fame player like Arenado. Advertisement "For the Cardinals, the return is exactly what they need. Triantos can step in as the third baseman of the future, Horton gives them a potential frontline starter, and Alcántara brings star potential to the outfield," wrote Kerman. "The salary relief allows St. Louis to reallocate resources and address other areas of need, all while restocking a system that's been thinned by years of contention." A trade between the NL Central division rivals is rare, but the Cubs may become desperate to improve at third base. Related: Cubs Outfielder Putting up Historic Team Numbers

New York Islanders hire Tampa Bay Lightning assistant Mathieu Darche as their general manager
Associated Press The New York Islanders hired Mathieu Darche as their general manager Friday, giving the two-time Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning assistant his long-awaited first chance to run an NHL team. Darche was named executive vice president and GM and put in charge of the organization's hockey operations department. 'Mathieu is the perfect choice to lead our hockey operations,' said co-owner John Collins, who ran the GM search. 'He will be given every resource available to put the Islanders first-in-class on the ice, with our business initiatives and in the community.' Darche joins the Islanders after spending the past six seasons with the Lightning, who never missed the playoffs during his tenure. He got his name engraved in the Cup in 2020 and '21 as director of hockey operations and also worked directly for Tampa Bay GM Julien BriseBois over the past three years. 'Mathieu has served as a key member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and has a diverse background in top-level business models,' Collins said. "He is a proven winner and is committed, as is our ownership group, to building a group that will be highly competitive next season and beyond.' The 48-year-old former player was considered the top NHL assistant who had not been GM in the league. Darche beat out more experienced executive Marc Bergevin for the job. He succeeds Lou Lamoriello in the role after the 82-year-old longtime executive's contract was not renewed. Darche played 268 regular-season and playoff games from 2001-12 as a winger with Columbus, Nashville, San Jose, Tampa Bay and Montreal. The Quebec native left hockey for a few years before moving to Tampa to begin working for the Lightning. Taking over the Islanders, Darche starts with the No. 1 pick in the draft thanks to their unexpected lottery win and more than $25 million in salary cap space to use to inject some high-end talent into a roster lacking it. They traded center Brock Nelson at the deadline in March and missed the playoffs for the second time in four years. 'With the Islanders owning the first overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft and preparing to welcome the Olympic sendoff at UBS Arena next season, there is much to which our franchise, our players, and our passionate fans can look forward,' Collins said. 'Mathieu's arrival adds to that momentum.' Darche inherits coach Patrick Roy, a Hall of Fame goaltender who has established himself as a fiery and effective voice behind the bench. He has been in charge on Long Island since Lamoriello hired him as a midseason replacement in January 2024, and Roy led a turnaround that season to get into the playoffs. 'I am truly honored by the opportunity,' Darche said. 'I'd like to thank Scott Malkin, Jon Ledecky, John Collins, and the entire ownership group for entrusting me with the hockey operations of this great franchise.' With 2023 All-Star and Vezina Trophy finalist goalie Ilya Sorokin signed long term and a reliable core of veterans around, the next step is drafting, developing and attracting more players who can bring offense. Only four teams scored fewer goals than the Islanders this past season. ___ AP NHL: recommended

"He had exposure ... that's why they say he is the greatest" - Walt Frazier says MJ is only called the GOAT because he got the most nationally televised games
The "Greatest Of All Time" title in sports has always been a slippery slope, tangled in nostalgia, highlight moments, and generational bias. But every now and then, a legend of the game speaks plainly enough to force a pause. One name that always seems to come up is Michael Jordan. For his role in leading the Chicago Bulls dynasty and his impact on the game in general, MJ is often labeled the greatest. But not everyone shares the sentiment. Jordan's exposure Walt "Clyde" Frazier, the two-time NBA champion and Hall of Fame guard who orchestrated the New York Knicks' golden era in the early 1970s, took a different approach to explaining why Michael stands as the definitive figure in many people's minds. Advertisement "He had exposure," Frazier said. "At the time Jordan played, [the NBA was] bigger than football. [The NBA's] ratings were higher than football. That's why they say he is the greatest. "Who saw Wilt Chamberlain? How many people are alive that saw him play? It's the same thing with the Heisman trophy; the guys on the West Coast weren't winning it because we were sleeping. In the East, when they're playing, the people that vote are sleeping," he added. It wasn't about sheer dominance alone — although Jordan had plenty of that. It was about when and how he dominated. Frazier's point was that visibility made the myth. When cable TV was booming and the NBA's global push was just beginning, MJ became a walking brand. He arrived at the right time, just as networks began televising more games nationally and Nike launched the Air Jordan line that would transform both footwear and athlete marketing. Advertisement But Frazier, who played in the 1960s and '70s when the NBA Finals were broadcast on tape delay, said that this wasn't always the case. Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game, averaged over 50 points in a season, and collected rebounding titles like trading cards. Yet his career, filled with feats that still seem unreal, unfolded primarily in a shadowed corner of sports media. Without televised broadcasts, some players and games couldn't be seen. For decades, the Heisman tended to lean heavily toward players in the Eastern and Central time zones, where voters were more likely to have seen the games live. Visibility, once again, shaped greatness. One had to be seen to be remembered. Literally. Related: "When I needed cash, he said, 'how much?'" - John Salley says Shaquille O'Neal loaned him $70,000 when he was broke and didn't want it back A different era MJ was impossible to miss as the face of the NBA. Advertisement From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, he appeared on national broadcasts at a frequency no other player could match. The 1993 NBA Finals between Jordan's Bulls and Charles Barkley's Phoenix Suns drew an average of 17.9 million viewers, outpacing that year's World Series and nearly matching the Super Bowl. And that was just one chapter in Michael's media dominance. "The exposure of players and the publicity can make you [the greatest]," Frazier said. It was less about denying Jordan's brilliance and more about unpacking the factors that helped elevate his legend. After all, the NBA has seen a revolving cast of generational talents — Bill Russell won 11 championships, Chamberlain set many records, and Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double before the stat line became a thing. Even in the later years, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson redefined rivalries, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired with the most points in NBA history — a record that stood for nearly four decades. Yet none of them became the cultural icon Jordan did. Advertisement Jordan's greatness, of course, wasn't a fluke. Six championships, five MVP awards, 10 scoring titles, and a two-way game that terrified even the most elite opponents. But Frazier's argument doesn't dispute the résumé. It challenges the criteria by which it's mythologized. Bills recruit NBA legend Allen Iverson for creative NFL schedule release
NFL schedule release videos are always fun to see each year, and the Buffalo Bills are always among the teams thinking outside the box. This year, the Bills had the ultimate play on words when their video began with general manager Brandon Beane calling MVP quarterback Josh Allen, asking if he had any ideas for how to release the schedule. "Just use AI," Allen told Beane. "That's what everybody's doing." Artificial intelligence has become a useful tool, but what Allen was doing to start the video hinted at how Beane took his suggestion. Allen was shooting basketballs instead of throwing footballs, and Beane channeled a different AI. Beane called NBA Hall of Fame point guard Allen Iverson, nicknamed "AI." "Yeah, I don't know what I'm doing," Iverson told Beane over a web call. "Why am I here?" "We do want you to reveal the Buffalo Bills' 2025 schedule," Beane replied. Iverson liked that Allen was the player who gave Beane the idea, though he did ask if the quarterback meant using artificial intelligence. "You're the only AI I know," Beane answered. So, Iverson obliged and was happy to do so. He held up a piece of paper with all 17 games and the bye week listed. While Iverson did the schedule release, he wasn't thrilled with Beane's final request. "Can I get a 'Go Bills?'" Beane asked. "Go Josh Allen," Iverson, a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, replied with a smile. Buffalo opens its 2025 campaign on "Sunday Night Football," facing the Baltimore Ravens at home. Another notable game is a Nov. 2 rematch of the AFC championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9 at 4:25 p.m. at home.
