Dakota Johnson And Pedro Pascal Weigh In On Why The Rom-Com Genre Isn't ‘Silly', And I Couldn't Agree With Them More
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The rom-com genre is alive and well, as several excellent titles have hit theaters or streaming in recent years. One of the newest additions to the genre is Celine Song's Materialists, which opens in June. The film sees Dakota Johnson play a matchmaker who's torn between a wealthy man (played by Pedro Pascal) and her ex (played by Chris Evans), who's trying to make ends meet. Ahead of their 2025 movie release, Johnson and Pascal argued as to why the rom-com genre isn't "silly," and I totally agree with their thoughts. When the three aforementioned stars of Materialists were interviewed by Fandango, they were told that Celine Song wanted to approach the rom-com genre seriously. The filmmaker felt that previous films of the genre were treated as 'fluff.' This led Dakota Johnson to share that she never felt rom-coms were 'silly,' and she noted just how relatable they can be: It's not a silly genre, and I think that the term romantic comedy or rom-com has been made less important or less serious, but it's for everyone. Everyone can relate to wanting love or being loved or losing love or dreaming or lacking, whatever it is. And it just makes you feel nice. Dakota Johnson's response is spot on. I'm probably not the only one who remembers when people would call rom-coms 'chick flicks,' which I always found demeaning. Like the Fifty Shades of Grey actress said, there are many people who can relate to the idea of finding love and losing it or dreaming about love. Concepts like that shouldn't be seen as 'silly.' If anything, these movies tell very human stories that resonate with the masses. Celine Song's directorial debut, Past Lives, which is about unrequited love, shows the messiness that can result when two people who were together at one point in their lives find themselves on different paths years later. Despite having moved on, the two main characters still asked themselves, 'What if?' Pedro Pascal perfectly discussed the 'high-stakes' that can come with love and the importance of portraying that on the big screen: And the stakes are really high. Love is really [a] high-stakes game. So I love that played out in a movie, especially if its visual authorship is under someone like Celine Song, and that's something that really, really deserves to be seen on the big screen. More on Dakota Johnson I Love A Good Chain Mail Look On The Red Carpet, And Dakota Johnson Just Went So Glam With It I couldn't agree with this more. The trailer for Materialists may give the impression that the upcoming movie is a standard rom-com. However, I have a feeling that under Celine Song's direction, it'll be so much more than that. Considering Song's past experience as a matchmaker, she can speak to the subject matter and, as a smart screenwriter, I'll think she'll avoid typical genre conventions. Maybe this upcoming A24 movie won't be about the importance of who the protagonist ends up choosing but about listening to her own values in a material world compared to what's societally 'perfect.' The rom-com genre doesn't get credit where it's due in my humble opinion. While films like Silver Linings Playbook and Crazy Rich Asians have received praise in recent years, it feels as though some people still look down on those kinds of films. As for the exact reasoning for that, it's hard to say. In 2023, though, Anyone but You struck box office gold, with an over $200 million global haul. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led film didn't fare well with critics, but it did seem to indicate that general audiences have a hunger for rom-coms. Anyone who's on the fence about the value of romantic comedies should really consider Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal's sentiments. Yes, rom-coms can be silly and corny, but they're also capable of portraying real-life experiences and conveying deep themes. That's what I'm hoping to see from Materialists when it opens in theaters on June 13th.

Pedro Pascal just make every gay & girlie's fantasy come true with three words
Pedro Pascal knows exactly what he's doing. During a recent interview with Fandango promoting Materialists, Celine Song's Past Lives follow-up and unexpected swing into romantic comedy, Pascal sat between fellow stars Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, serving chaos, charm, and more than a few suggestive glances. At one point, the trio was asked to share their 'unicorn traits,' or the unique qualities that make them relationship material. Evans went the earnest route, calling himself 'very supportive.' Johnson joked that she's selfish. And then Pascal, with a sly smile and dramatic pause, delivered the line we've all been desperate to hear: 'I'm a pleaser.' Cue everyone melting. — (@) The interview, part of Materialists' early promo push, offered a glimpse at the chemistry behind the film's central love triangle, which follows Lucy (Johnson), a Manhattan matchmaker, as she finds herself torn between the broke actor she left behind (Evans) and the rich new man who walks into her life (Pascal). Inspired by classic '80s romcoms like Broadcast News and Terms of Endearment, Materialists seems poised to revive the genre with both elegance and emotional wreckage. But while Pascal may be channeling Harrison Ford in Working Girl onscreen, offscreen, he's doing something even more powerful. This week, he joined over 100 artists, including Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, and Daniel Radcliffe, in signing an open letter from The Trevor Project opposing the proposed elimination of $50 million in federal funding for LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention. 'We will not stay silent,' the letter declares. 'Stripping away this lifeline leaves LGBTQ+ youth with the message that their lives are not worth saving. We refuse to accept that message.' So yes, Pascal is a pleaser. But he's also a protector. A unicorn with range, if you will. It's yet another reason in our growing list of why Pascal will forever have a place in our hearts. Black Phone sequel releases terrifying new teasers
The Black Phone 2 has unveiled three terrifying new teasers, ahead of its upcoming release. The original movie followed shy 13-year-old Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), who was abducted by a mask-wearing child killer known as The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). But things take an eerie turn when a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring and Finney hears the voices of The Grabber's previous victims. The horror sequel is scheduled to hit cinemas later this year with Thames, Hawke, Madeleine McGraw and Jeremy Davies reprising their roles. While the plot details are being kept under wraps, new footage released by Fandango has revealed a key location, different victims and, of course, a black phone. 'The phone is ringing again. Are you going to answer?'We just got a text that included the first tease for BLACK PHONE 2! Only in theaters this October. — Fandango (@Fandango) May 31, 2025 Related: The first teaser trailer, posted on X/Twitter, sees the snowy backdrop of the Christian Alpine Lake Youth Camp, as an abandoned telephone box begins to light up and ring. "Jesus, I'm not doing so well. I need help, some real help," narrates an unknown voice. "I'm scared he's gonna kill me." Related: Jill Halfpenny's tense new UK thriller gets mysterious teaser ahead of release: "People don't just disappear" 'This place. This is where it happened.'We just received another video teasing BLACK PHONE 2. — Fandango (@Fandango) May 31, 2025 The second clip features the pictures of three missing young boys, whose murders are explained by another faceless character. The character details what happened to each of the boys at the camp, alongside horrific flashbacks of the deaths. Meanwhile, the third and final teaser shows ominous flashes of the terrifying dead victims, whose bloodied bodies were hidden across the camp. The clip ends with a voice declaring "we're going to die out here", followed by an inside shot of the telephone box. 'We're going to die out here.'A third video teasing BLACK PHONE 2 just arrived in the form of another mysterious text message… on our phone 😱 — Fandango (@Fandango) May 31, 2025 Though The Grabber didn't make a direct appearance in the footage, could the murders be linked to the sinister villain? Tom Cruise's last Mission? Lilo & Stitch remake helps US box office break decade-old record
LOS ANGELES, May 27 — Walt Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch and Tom Cruise's newest Mission: Impossible adventure brought crowds to cinemas and helped set a box office record for the US Memorial Day weekend. Receipts for the top 10 films reached US$326.7 million in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore estimates of ticket sales from Friday through Monday. That topped the previous record of US$314.3 million for the holiday weekend, set in 2013 when the sixth Fast & Furious film debuted. The milestone provided positive news for the film industry, which remains below pre-pandemic levels in yearly ticket sales. Hollywood labour strikes in 2023 and competition from streaming services have affected cinema attendance. Family audiences turned out for Lilo & Stitch, a remake of a 2002 animated classic about a mischievous blue alien taken in by two sisters in Hawaii. Cruise fans showed up to see the actor and his death-defying stunts in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The film is the eighth instalment in the action franchise and is being promoted as Cruise's last appearance as fictional spy Ethan Hunt. A slate of spring releases that appealed to audiences increased box office results over the past two months and helped boost interest among cinemagoers for this weekend's films, according to box office analysts. 'That success has transitioned into significant momentum,' said Shawn Robbins, director of film analytics for ticket seller Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory. 'Two major studios put out two very different films for very different audiences, and they yet again proved cinema-going is still an important piece of the fabric of pop culture,' Robbins said. Some earlier hits still showing in cinemas contributed to the weekend's tally, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular video game, brought its global total to US$940.6 million since its release in early April. Horror flick Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan rose to US$339 million. Both were distributed by Warner Bros. Year-to-date ticket sales in the US and Canada totalled US$3.1 billion, 22 per cent higher than at the same point in 2023, but 28 per cent below the pre-pandemic year of 2019, Comscore said. Avengers: Endgame, the second-highest grossing film of all time, was dominating the charts in May 2019. The new films this weekend also generated strong sales overseas. Lilo & Stitch added US$158.7 million in international markets for a global total of US$314.7 million. Mission: Impossible, distributed by Paramount Global, racked up US$205.5 million around the world, with US$127 million coming from outside the United States and Canada. Cinema owners hope the enthusiasm continues through the summer, Hollywood's biggest season for film releases. Upcoming titles include a new Superman movie, a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon and F1 starring Brad Pitt as a Formula 1 driver. — Reuters
